20th Aura | Video (Backdated to the 13th)

[The video starts with Jaune in his apartment.] Hey. Jaune Arc again. Now that I've been taking a break, I wanted to take a few minutes to talk about something that's very important to me:

And that's drinking less energy drinks and drinking more water. [He holds up a glass of delicious, cold water, precariously filled to the rim. Look as the beads just glisten in the florescent lights.] Water is an important source of nutrients and energy. Most bodies are composed of...about fifty to ninety percent water? Depending on your species. And without it we can't do as much as well as we normally can. Our brains get sluggish, and our super powers or whatever aren't as super powerful. Which brings me to energy drinks. They're a good source of sugar, and, well, energy, but there's a reasonable limit and it's easy to cross that limit.

Don't be like me and drink ten in one night. Just don't. Don't do that. [His stare becomes haunted, before brightening again.] This message was brought to you by X-Ray and- [Bark! An excited white golden retriever named Snow runs down the hall and into Jaune's leg, thinking it's time for pets, but Jaune was unprepared and he has to catch himself from dropping the glass, upsetting the still surface and spilling some on his shirt and pants--]

[He looks either nauseous or uncomfortable and drops his device as he falls rather suddenly, his dog barking at the video while a frustrated, screeching COME ON!!! echoes in the apartment. Turning the fallen device back to him, his problem is quickly made clear. Jaune is now sporting a bright yellow tail with two broader fins and a smaller one that fans out at the end. Some of the scales seem to grow bright blue, particularly the ones lining the edges, and bringing the camera up it's shown that while the scales don't fully stop there, going up his elbows and some on his neck where his gills are, his normally blue eyes seem even brighter than before. Despite the change in appearance, Jaune just groans and slumps back on the floor while Snow starts investigating the different scents.]

I guess I'll go live in the ocean until this is over. Dogs don't eat fish...right?

[ Ugh. A mermaid. Fayren has taught Eleanor to hate mermaids. ]

Ahhh that's so pretty! and a really cool trick, the mermaids in my world never get normal legs.

Why do you have to go to the ocean? Just fly around, like mermaids do when water isn't near.

[Yes, fish stuff, but... there's something that concerns 47 more.]

Was this... energy drink binge last night?

What! [This mermaid's voice cracks, and he's very affronted, even as his tail flops uselessly on the floor and Snow has gotten bored and sat next to him, pressing his face down on his tail and waiting to be pet. Jaune obliges.]

Just because I could, doesn't mean I'm going to eat anyone. [Pausing.] Probably. [Staring at her.] I don't know, maybe with some honey mustard...

I'm not an actual mermaid. [Jaune just sounds miserable. It's dry in here and he's starting to feel lightheaded. But that one comment has him brighten.] Do you really think I'm pretty?

Mermaids can fly?!

How does one become a fake mermaid? [Jaune you might wan to find someone who can get you into a bathtub. At the question, Dray practically purrs.] Why, of course. Handsome too.

D'uh, of course! River and lake mermaids do it all the time.

[He shakes his head.] It was a couple of months ago after pulling a particularly rough all nighter. By the end of it I wasn't sure what I had written for my paperwork but I think it suddenly made me really good at math. I only drink one a day now.

I don't know. I guess the same way people split into two or grow wings. [While talking, he starts trying to get to the bathroom by dragging himself with his arms. Which is harder than he thought because the tail is both heavier and doesn't move the way he's used to. But that comment makes him freeze, blue markings practically bright as lightning and his eyes literally lighting up too. Well, shit. That's embarrassing. He covers it up with a nervous laugh.] I mean...you're clearly handsome-er.

Do you know how?

If you get split into two you die, I don't recommend it. Not so sure about the wings, though. [Its' kind of a pitiful view and Dray feel bad for him. A little hungry too, because fiiiiiish, but mostly he is worried.] Do you live alone? There's no one near you who could give you a hand?

[After the compliment, his worried face turns into a pleased one and his ears move. You said the magic words, Jaune.] Oh...thank you. I didn't think humans would like me.

It's been a long time since I saw them. [For a brief moment, Dray look melancholic. A decade locked up really feels like a lifetime.] They swim, move their tails and sometime their arms but they do it in the air, floating. Maybe you need practice. you

No, it's more like your soul or personality gets split into two, so there ends up being two versions of you. This place likes to do stuff like that. [Please don't eat him Dray. Jaune shrugs.] I don't know where my roomie got to. I just-- I just want to be in the water. [And not some bathtub, though it's better than nothing.]

[His ears are adorable. Jaune might be blushing on top of everything else because his body didn't hate him enough.] I like blondes.

[He notices the melancholic look and starts to feel guilty.] ...I think Fayren has mermaids, but I don't know if they fly. But if you want to see them, we should go there. Maybe. Or maybe I have to fall from something to fly.

[Gwen is trying really hard not to laugh at her own joke before she tells it.]

So uh... Something fishy going on over there?

Something doesn't seem right in the tunaverse?

That's better. [Not ideal, but better.]

Caffeine overdose can be dangerous.

[Jaune's expression is completely blank as he stares at Gwen in silence. Covering his mouth, there's a muffled snort, but his shoulders are quaking before he bursts into full laughter. It's a pure sound, and he's very loud, falling all the way down to the floor and banging it with his fists while his tail reacts in the same way. He tries to calm himself down, but there are tears in his eyes, and his laughter quiets down with a occasional hiccup before he finally grins at her.]

Okay. You're a real Gwenner.

[Okay she doesn't have to hold in the laugh anymore. She joins in as he laughs. It's something she needs right about now. Between fighting monsters all night and adjusting to the weird new world, a good laugh certainly did her wonders.

Once they're done she'll give him a smug smirk there.]

You kind of look like a fish out of water though, do you need a hand getting back up there?

[Yang WAS bored, just moping in the hospital and still checking her empty inbox, before she found this little gem.]

[Now she's mildly concerned. And a little proud of Gwen's fish puns. But yes, also concerned.]

I like the color scheme.

[FINGER GUNS! ...Except she doesn't have the robot arm plugged in, so it's just one gun and a wink.]

I'm pretty sure you're too big for your dog to eat. But if you need help getting out to the ocean, I can probably come by on Wednesday to carry you out there.

I didn't even know there were such things as energy drinks. But I agree water is very good.

[She paused for a moment. She had no idea what was going on exactly but was normal... right?]

I've never heard of a dog eating fish. Cat's eat fish. Though... Why are you part fish now? Have you always been like that?

Yang?! What happened?!

[Look the last time he talked to Yang she was definitely not at the hospital and he has no idea what's going on. And while, yeah, her robot arm not being plugged in right now makes sense, she is. in. the. hospital.]

I just fed him about an hour ago, so hopefully he'll be okay for a while. It's okay. You should recover, hopefully this will wear off by then.

[He's glad she's finding this ridiculously amusing too. It's been a while since he's just laughed with someone. It feels nice and normal. Which is something he's forgotten how to do sometimes.]

[He rubs the back of his neck with an embarrassed smile.]

I might've forgotten my sea legs.

[ Her mouth opens in outrage and snaps closed again and her fuming is just growing and growing... ][ ]

Where abouts are you? I can give you a hand so you don't have to flounder about?

No, what's not funny is you're accusing me of...semi-cannibalism? While I'm wondering if I'll be able to breathe or if I should find a body of water if I want to live.

[And he pings her the location of his apartment, which happens to be in Nova City.]

Pretty sure mermaids ain't on their usual menu, though.

[And she's not really sure where he stands with Mercury. Still, he's a friend, she'll just skimp on the details.]

Just avoid Attleton for a while. Genessia City's monster party is nothing compared to that place. And don't worry, I heal fast.

[She smiles encouragingly.]

So just hang out in the tub for a while. If it hasn't worn off before I'm discharged, I'll take you wherever you need to go.

Anchors away, I'm setting sail.

[And it doesn't take her way too long to find Jaune's place. She did make a detour to a costume shop. She needed to pick up a pirates hat and eye patch. She's knocks on the door, then slowly opens it before lightly kicking it open. Anything more than that and she might accidentally break it. Super strength and such.]

Avast ye scurvy dog! Where ye be hiding!?

You drink it for the taste?

And the energy boost! Have you had the coffee and fruit ones?

I don't drink caffeine that often.

Whoa. How did you do that?! You didn't even break it!

[Jaune is impressed. But then he gets a better look at Gwen's costume and snorts, pretending to cower.]

Is this a kidnapping?!

You're clearly injured and in the hospital which means someone or something hurt you. Nothing complicated about it.

[He's not a fan of Mercury, at all, but he knows he's important to Emerald and people are looking past what he's done like he's been doing with Emerald, so whether he'd go after him just depends on the situation.]

...Do you not want to talk about it?

[Why is she the one encouraging him.]

Don't worry about doing that. I'll visit if I can.

They-- They do?

[Definitely not helping Jaune is looking increasingly nervous.]

What if he's open to trying new food?

It’s talent, what can I say?

[Gwen shrugs softly after that answer.

Jaune’s answer gets a dorky grin out of her and she strikes a pose with her hands on her hips.]

Gnyargh! Quiver in your gills merman! Cap’n Gwen’s here to steal all your booty!

An’ not in the booty call sort of way!

[Yang manages to grin, but honestly, she's a little touched at his perseverance. He's a good kid, even if he's probably got an extra year or two on her from being in Genessia for so long.]

[As for not wanting to talk about it, she leans back, shoulders and stump rising and falling with a deep exhale.]

It's not that. It just involves someone else's private details.

[She's dying to talk about it, though, because it's all been weighing more and more heavily on her mind, and she had a fight with her only teammate. So what's she supposed to do? Maybe if she just leaves out the names.]

My...partner and I...we were fighting monsters in Genessia, you know, having a pretty good time. We're both capable. But one of them got in a lucky hit and knocked him into Attleton. He was afraid of becoming someone who'd...do things like he did to me. Once he was taken out of that place he changed back, but he left the hospital, and he's not answering his comm, and I'm frustrated...and worried...and there's nothing I can do about it. That's the worst part.

[Yang frowns, letting her head roll back and to the side.]

It's not that I don't want to talk about it. It's just hard.

That still sounds very painful. Is there a way to merge your body and soul back if that happens? [Dray knows about some really bad magic but that is a new level of screwing up with people.] Looks like you might need it too. I can always come over and try to help, if you tell me where you are. I bet i can lift your bridal style.

[Dray is sort of small and doesn't look very impressive but his species is stronger than teh average human. Besides, he would like to touch the pretty tail and the even prettier man attached to it.] Do you, really? [Oh, yes, his voice is definitely flirty now.] Lucky me.

[His next smile is less him trying to charm Jaune and more to do with Dray appreciating the offer.] I live in Fayren, in the forest, but I haven't seen any mermaid yet. Please don't fall and hurt yourself...although that would give me a excuse to kiss it better.

[ She rolls her eyes. ]

Really good you're having fun at my expense. And I'm not accusing you of anything, but I've made bad experiences with mermaids before. Forgive me for being cautious.

[ Sighs, looks at the camera ]

Pretty sure he's smart enough t'figure out you're still you, even ... uh. Transformed, or whatever.

So, I wouldn't worry much.

[ "Much"? ]

[Jaune goes quiet and just listens. He isn't exactly as forgiving or understanding as Yang is about this. There's always a choice, and part of you that stays, regardless of what the city might do to you. It's the same reason why his worst side never took advantage of Weiss's best side when he was keeping an eye on her--instead he was just a salty, bitter mess. He doesn't know the full story, and he trusts Yang...but there's something very off balance here.]

He probably blames himself. And he should. If he actually does care? It's probably hard for him to see you like this now, knowing he did it.

If he's still throwing a pity party, maybe you should go punch him in the face when you get discharged.

[There's a flicker of mirth that tugs at the corners of her mouth.]

You're encouraging violence? Jaune, I'm shocked.

[No she's not. While she doesn't think Mercury should blame himself, the fact that he's going into hiding and feeling bad about it reminds her that he probably does care. The old Mercury would have laughed about it, and rolled right back into his daily routine. It affected him. She has to remember that, even when she's irritated and impatient.]

I don't know about his face, but...maybe the door. I'll give him a week. Something like that, I mean...some people just handle it differently and need to be alone, so I figure he's one of those. But my patience has limits.

...Thanks. For listening to me rant. I guess you don't have much choice since you don't have legs right now, but still? It's appreciated.

[He shrugs and responds cheerfully.]

Fight violence with violence. That's the whole point of fighting. ...Maybe. I don't know.

[He trails off uncertainly. It's hard not knowing who it is, and he definitely thinks whoever deserves more than a broken door. Way more. But that's not his decision. It's Yang's. As long as she doesn't get hurt again, he'll step back. But if it happens again and he ever finds out who it is, that's a different story.]

You mean you don't have all the patience in the world? You? I'm shocked. I don't think our friendship will ever be the same after knowing that, Yang. You were my patient rock.

Anytime. And it was my choice and helps me too. [He smiles faintly, sincerely, then adds after a moment.] Hey, Yang... Just, hypothetically speaking, from a girl's point of view, do you think guys without legs can still be...attractive?

[Yang grins, sinking back against her pillows as she relaxes. It feels kinda nice to just be joking around like this. She knows there's not a lot she can do about the whole ugly situation right now but wait. Humor makes the waiting easier to swallow.]

[But man, to ask her that question, considering the very person she's fretting about? She blinks, and stares for a moment.]

...Hell yes I do.

[And if that boosts his ego, so be it. Besides, it's not like Jaune is ugly; not even remotely.]

I mean...I'd be kind of a hypocrite if I thought people with missing limbs were less attractive, right?

[She won't wave her stump at him, it'd be kind of gross.]

[He starts trying to drag himself to the front door, wincing a little when he realizes his own mistake. Oh god he just meant that this was kind of strange for him and he always ends up saying the wrong things and he was just a dumb jerk and he knows Yang isn't an ultra-sensitive person but still there's a time and place for--

Oh.]

R-really? [He relaxes a little. It wouldn't be gross to him!] I say this as your friend, but Yang, you are the hottest person to have ever walked Remnant and Genessia, and anyone you wanna be with is the luckiest person alive and needs to stop being stupid. I would be grateful, if I was punched in the face by you.

But if you change your mind and ever need someone to punch that jerk, I'm sure Nora would be happy to use her hammer. And I would be too. But Nora's more intimidating.

[Yang laughs. It hurts her rib. She doesn't care, putting a hand to her side as she fixes the camera with a grin and a little shake of her head.]

Well this future 'lucky' guy is also going to be saddled with my temper, stubbornness, and more issues than you could shake a stick at. But I'm glad I've got a friend like you in my corner to root me on.

[And maybe someday when she does wrestle more of those issues in control, she'll start looking for a guy she wants as more than just someone fun to flirt around with. For now, though, there's no way she'd bring that into a relationship with someone unprepared to deal with it.]

Seriously, you're one of the sweetest people I know. If you need a reference for future dates, I'll be glad to drop some positive qualities on that person in your favor.
