[The night is young, and Luther appears to have a cup of coffee sitting next to him on the small desk as the video feed initializes. Is he running for an office? Heavens, no! I wouldn't know the first thing about running one of these places.

At least...not yet. No. This post is going to be much more simple.]

Wow...so, this month started off interesting, didn't it? [In a lot of good ways, and bad ways, and several ways in between.]

I know I've been pretty radio silent, but I'm glad I can say I was still me through all of it. Maybe we should all just put it behind us. It's not like it was our fault, right?

[That's the impression he's getting, anyway.]

Okay, let's talk business. I need a job. I thought I'd be able to get out of here sooner than this, but I was wrong. [He leans toward the camera as though to make this multi-target transmission more intimate.]

I can do a lot of things, learn a lot more of them, but I've got a stipulation: I only work nights, an hour after dark. Gives me time to get there after I wake up. If you're looking to hire someone, just let me know. It's not a resume, that seemed sort of pointless, given the circumstances, but here's a list of what I've done in the past. Sorry, folks. My references are a couple dimensions away.

Hmm. You know, there are a few nightclubs in Genessia and Nova City, you could see if one of them would like to hire you. If they don't need help running their business, they could use you as a bouncer, maybe.

Otherwise ... maybe try the police force? They'd have night shifts, I'd imagine.

[ Taps his chin in thought. ]

Not to be rude, but are you a cop or a criminal? Because with your skill set I'm kind of confused about that, and I made a bet with myself. I want to know if I won.

[He's nodding as the response comes through, looking thoughtful. The idea of running someone else's club doesn't sit well with him, but beggars and choosers and all that.]

Wait. You think I look like a cop?

[He laughs.]

You know, I read a lot of Sherlock Holmes as a kid. I used to run around with a dearstalker had and a magnifying glass, and everything.

It's not rude, but you're the second person to suggest "cop". I'm not, and I'm not a criminal, either. I've just...people where I come from need to be well-rounded. It's a survival thing.

It seems a few people have suggested that you go into law enforcement.

[Belle smiles softly at the screen.]

I don't wish to give the same suggestion but what is it that you like. It's a wonderful list of the things that you can do but I've found that this world gives us a chance to try new things, maybe something that you've always wanted to do or something you aren't used too.

[ The talk of ... whatever or whoever Sherlock Holmes was, of course, went straight over his head. He ignored it easily. ]

It's not so much what you look like here, I think you'll quickly find.

There's a cyborg running for Guardian, and robots and aliens hold similar positions of authority already.

If you've not had the opportunity for something like that before, but you'd like to pursue it? This place gives you the chance.

Regardless of what expectations you'd have about it, from what you've read.

Okay, okay, not cop then. Although you could become one here, if you like. I dunno. There are probably loads of tech jobs in Nova City, it's this high-tech place.

Well, I know there's plenty of opportunities for me to wait tables, but I've never wanted to.

[He smiles.]

Being a cop sounds like it could be fun, though.

Well I hope you find something that you want to do.

[Her expression remains pleasant though her light brown eyes are shining with amusement.]

I think it's very admirable to want to help others like that.

[That's okay, he likes you, Takumi. Maybe he'll force you into watching old Sherlock Holmes stuff.]

That wasn't exactly my point, but...yeah, okay.

[He smirks slightly.] Aren't we all technically aliens?

...huh. So, I don't have to go to an academy or anything first?

[ He might like that! As weird as watching non-hologram media is for him.

Head tilts: ] So, what did you mean, then?

[ Returns that smirk: ]

That's a pretty good point. Not one everyone seems to recognize, either here, or even where I'm from. Humans seem to kind of be a self-centered lot, honestly.

[ Shrugs ] No idea. Maybe. Can't say I've looked into it myself.

Yeah, I've seen Nova City. [But he shrugs.]

Maybe. Cop doesn't sound so bad, actually. Maybe I could be a detective. I've get a pretty good sense of smell.

See? Sounds like you've got a plan. You could... I dunno, if you don't want to be wearing uniform, you could be a private eye, too.

Thanks. [He pauses for a moment before smiling.] What's your name?

Please excuse me. My name is Belle. It's a pleasure to meet you.

[She inclines her head in a soft bow.]

I don't believe I caught your name.

I mean...that's sort of cool...that I look like a cop, I mean. I've been in charge of keeping the peace before.

[In a very small place, and mostly because his mother wanted a way to keep him distracted...]

Anyway, yeah, they are, even though...they're not even the top of the food chain.

I don't hold that against them, though. It's not like they know, and it's safer for everyone if they think that.

How so?

[ Head-tilts, curious, so very curious. He can't really help it. ]

What is on the top of the food chain?

Considering, we're not in your world - it might be safe for me to know, as an outsider.

[ Well, that and he really didn't feel threatened by much. ]

[He nods, looking thoughtful.]

Detectives don't wear uniforms either, do they?

Luther.

[And he smiles a charming smile. At least, it's a charming smile that usually works on younger women.]

It's nice to meet you, Belle.

It's a long story, but basically...we're sort of like a resistance movement.

Well, us. Vampires. A creature that feeds on another is above them on the food chain, right?

I guess.

[ Looks a little sheepish ]

Most people mean that figuratively, not literally. That's all.

You as well. Luther.

[She smiles softly.]

I hope I was some small measure of help.

Well, yeah, but...most people aren't vampires. Really, there aren't many of us left.

[He pauses.]

Look, if it makes you feel any better, we don't kill them.

[He smiles back.]

More than you probably realize. Thanks.

Maybe not where you're from. I think you're a bit more numerous here ... at least in Everglade, anyhow.

[ Laughs, as if relieved. Inwardly, he does feel a little better for that - because it means the price Luther would need to pay for his continued survival wasn't so high. ]

I - I wasn't even thinking about that.

[ Stutters a little, as if caught in a lie. Just look at how harmless he was, really. ]

B-but. I mean. That's all the more reason - applying to be part of the police won't pose any. Um. Conflict of interest.

[She likes being able to make friends.]

...are you saying those undead mongrels count as vampires?

( And yeah, he does sound a little offended. He's not making any friends in Everglade today. )

Yeah. I mean, I don't think it would. As long as I'm upfront about it, right?

( Smiling, he picks up the device, recognizing the conversation is coming to a close. )

[With a smile, Belle flicks off the device.]

I don't think so? Everything's different here anyway, who knows.

Well, according to one definition? [ Scratches the back of his head ] I'm already learning that vampires seem to vary from world to world, based on what I'm reading.

[ And the people he's talking to, clearly. ]

I think so! Honesty builds trust, and working for a job like that - you'd need both the city which employs you and its people to trust you a good deal.

[ Which, if you think about it, means it's really for the best that Takumi had no interest in law enforcement himself. ]
