Good afternoon, everyone. It's me, um... Shi. I hope I'm not interrupting anyone..?

I've been working at the Genessia shrine lately, and it's had me wondering... What kinds of things do you expect from shrines in your worlds? I realize I've been doing my best to maintain the shrine like I would back home, but that's kind of ignorant... The shrine is empty and sad a lot, so I want to bring more people here. The poor spirits will get lonely...

What kinds of spirits does everyone have back home, too? Is there anything I should do for them here? I want to do the best job I can, so...

[action: Genessia Shrine]

[During the day, Shi is cleaning up the shrine. It's cold work in the winter, but he doesn't want the shrine to get wet and soggy when the snow melts. Anyone who visits will find this chipper teen spinning around to face them, work paused so he can smile in greeting.]

Welcome to the shrine! Can I help you?

[She has to chew this one over for a while. So after he makes his broadcast, it's several hours before Allie finally answers, because shit, this kid sounds like he can actually see the spirits.]

[Or maybe he's crazy. All the other happy smiley people sure seem to have been dropped on their heads as children, anyway.]

You ever actually see a spirit? Why would they want to hang out with living people instead of other dead people like themselves?

Depends. We talkin' Casper or Poltergeist here?

[Because she's seen mostly column A, and they're annoying, but the ones from column B are the ones she'd rather avoid altogether.]

[Shortly after he says he can talk to and see spirits, she opens her mouth to ask him questions.]

[But then he says he's a spirit.]

Shit. Not again.

[And she hangs up immediately. RUDE.]

[Bad enough she had to deal with them popping up in front of her face back home, now they're haunting the radio too. How invasive can these suckers get?]

[Shrines? Anastasia is well aware of shrines on her world. Visited a number of them.]

On my world, there are minor shrines dedicated to our Goddesses, but there are one of a kind specific locations around the world that is said to be a doorway into the world where the Goddesses hold dominion.

I'm not entirely certain what can be done here to honor them. Most worship is through action rather than through idols.

Ah, afraid shrines belonged more the Orient than the Occident; I lived in the latter. Still, the thought that the numinous get lonely is a strange one, almost melancholy. Not resting or finishing affairs, just...relying on the still-living for attention?

We never did much for them, assuming we believed in them at all. The dead rarely make good company for the living.

It depends on the actions. For example, my world's Goddess of Land, Harvest and Festivals really appreciates it when farmers take pride in their crops. Legends say She appeared in farmland that raised their crops best.

[Seth is at work so he shoots his roommate a text.]

What about having a festival day and let everyone in Genessia bring charms and share wishes. I remember that being a custom.

[personal profile] youfool 2018-03-14 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, that's...you feel lonely, Shi?

[He kinda does too, though not in that mode. More for just being a weirdo.]

Or you can make up your own festival. Add a mess of stuff that you learn from the people who reply to this.

I'll even help, if you want.
youfool: (hmm)

[personal profile] youfool 2018-03-15 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, well, I'm glad to hear that. Genessia has a way of granting company to all.

Huh. Are the spirits not company enough for each other? Having lived so long I'd expect they'd find one another far more interesting. What do flesh and blood--aside from bodies-- have that they prize so much?

Spirits?

[She's never met one, back home.]

Um, festivals, I believe. What are spirits like?
youfool: (hmm)

[personal profile] youfool 2018-03-17 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, I see. The sorrow of the disembodied. I've seen the worst of that firsthand.

[But no let's not talk about the void spirits.]

And they're no good to each other either, it'd seem. Have you, er, actually encountered any? At the shrine, that is? Or is it more a going assumption?

[Cause that'd disturb him quiiiite a bit to know that they live in a world of both empty bodies and disembodied spirits.]

unbridledtiger: (Yeah.)

[personal profile] unbridledtiger 2018-03-22 07:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Why wouldn't they? I've heard that lanterns can call spirits, among other things. I'm sure you can organize something like that.
youfool: (wut)

[personal profile] youfool 2018-03-23 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
[Sure didn't!]

Truly? I, heh, didn't know they were accorded size.

[That the world has anything really numinous in it, particularly with all the empty sprites, comes as a shock.]

I, ah, met them once. It was...interesting, I suppose, but they didn't have much to say. They rarely come out unless it's on the fringes of some catastrophe, we've found. Goodness knows what monumental labor so occupies them.

[personal profile] youfool 2018-03-29 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
They're...mm. Very faint; their duties seem to weigh heavily on them, to the point where all the other niceties of personality, if there are any, are muted. They're...honorable, perhaps. Conscientious. Interested in our development and character, I suppose.

Heh, go on, finish the thought. Wonder what?
youfool: (hmm)

[personal profile] youfool 2018-03-30 01:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I don't know that you are taking care of them, directly. As I said they're very scarce. For another, while "kidnapping" is the popular assumption, it remains an assumption. Perhaps a flippant one. We don't really know how they brought us here; goodness, if it comes to that, it's not entirely certain what we are!

[He sounds more cheerily exclamatory than nervous about their questionable existence.]

So we don't quite know what they've done or why.

[Well Ted kinda knows but it's not the most actionable knowledge.]

But even if kidnapping is a perfect description, well, it's hasty to assume that treating one's kidnapper well is necessarily an immoral act. I doubt abusing them would be any better.
carrythesin: ([oro; it followed me])

[personal profile] carrythesin 2018-04-07 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
So were they human at one point or not yet?
carrythesin: ([hmm?; say again?])

[personal profile] carrythesin 2018-04-14 01:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Almost human, but different.
