For those that I have not had the pleasure of meeting yet, my name is Lioriley. And I have a request for those that care to indulge me:

Will you tell me a story? A tale from your homeland, a song, a poem, anything that you are willing to share with me and - perhaps - everyone that comes to listen to this as well.

I am also curious to know if there are heroes where you hail from. Are you one of them? Do you know them — or are their stories simply legends passed down through the ages?

If you wish for me to answer any of these questions as well, I would be more than happy to. Thank you.

Certainly! I like this one: The Lion and the Ass.

[He clears his throat.]

A lion and an ass, two friends, agreed to go hunting one day. They'd spotted a herd of goats run into a cave, and schemed how to get them.

"I know", said the Lion. "You go first and cause a stir. I'll lie in wait to pounce upon the frightened who flee."

The plan worked without a hitch. Beaming, the ass approached the lion after the din he'd made.

"Did you see how adroitly I scared them?"

"Yes", said the lion, "and were I less familiar, I'd flee too."

[Please, oh please ask him the moral of the story. His sententiousness needs exercise.]

The Dragonsong War

Long ago, a group of Elezen went to settle in the land of Coerthas and found themselves in conflict with the dragons of Dravania who had lived there for countless eons before them.

The hostilities came to an end when one of the First Brood, Hraesvelgr, fell in love with an Elezen maiden by the name of Shiva. Their love was pure and true, but as her life is but a blink of an eye compared to the ageless dragons, she besought Hraesvelgr to devour her so her soul would be entwined with his for eternity.

Though reluctant at first, Hraesvelgr honored Shiva's request and inspired an alliance between man and dragon that lasted for two hundred years.

The peace was ended when King Thordan I and his followers broke the alliance by killing Ratatoskr, the most trusting of the First Brood, and devouring her eyes that they might claim her power as their own. Through the calming influence of Shiva's soul, Hraesvelgr was able to maintain a level head and see the folly in vengeance, though the same could not be said for their brood-brother, Nidhogg.

Nidhogg attempted to avenge her and though Thordan and four of the knights were slain, Nidhogg's eyes were gouged out. He told Hraesvelgr of the treachery so to receive his brood-brother's eye and continue his campaign of vengeance against the descendants of Thordan and his Knights Twelve - the people of the Holy See of Ishgard.

Over time, Nidhogg grew strong. Strong enough to wipe Ishgard off the face of the map if he so desired, but this was not enough for him. He didn't want them to die. He wanted them to suffer for what they had done to his brood-sister.

And thus the Dragonsong War was born.

Ishgard's people were raised in a culture with the belief that Nidhogg and his brood were attacking them merely for encroaching upon his territory, never knowing the truth of the grand betrayal of their ancestors. They fought with a conviction brought on by lies and countless lives were lost over the course of the war, both Ishgardian and Dravanian.

While Hraesvelgr did not seek active vengeance for his beloved brood-sister he also did not prevent Nidhogg's endless rampage. It was not until a thousand years later that he was approached by a lone adventurer and their companions, seeking his aid in ending the war. Reluctant at first, Hraesvelgr eventually tested their strength and resolve by challenging them in combat.

Seeing their strength, he agreed to put his faith in mankind one last time and pledged an alliance with Ishgard to stop the final chorus of the Dragonsong War.

When Nidhogg laid siege to the Steps of Faith just outside Ishgard's walls, Hraesvelgr and the Adventurer arrived to challenge him. His attempts to persuade Nidhogg into letting go of his hatred were for naught, and the great wyrms dueled in the skies. Though they seemed evenly matched, Nidhogg eventually managed to overpower and wound Hraesvelgr. But Hraesvelgr gave the Adventurer one of his eyes, granting them the power to challenge and defeat Nidhogg.

With Hraesvelgr's aid the Adventurer managed to end the wyrm's reign of terror, destroying his spirit and freeing both Ishgard and Nidhogg's brood from his madness.

Now there is a new alliance between Ishgard and the Dravanians, and it looks to be stronger than the one that preceded it.

Hmm... Well, I know of a few heroic souls? While I've been traveling between worlds, I've noticed that some souls seem to have a fate of becoming heroes.

[A chance to share his Kami origins story and gain some faith...!

I would be glad to hear it! Though I am afraid I know not what a Kami is - if you could enlighten me so.

They're spirits that people believe in soo strongly, they get a physical body! Back home spirits are just human souls without bodies, so it's like... the greatest thing ever!

[He's getting excited. Maybe telling this story to the public will help him be healthier.]

Oh! What a delightful little tale. I can surely guess to the underlying meaning of such an exchange, but I wonder how you and your people often interpret it?

[ Sure, she'll bite. Go nuts. ]

Likely the same as yours: familiarity diminishes astonishment, or other kinds of personal pruffery.

Have you any didactic tales like that?

[Cause boy would he like to add to his substantial collection.]

[ Lioriley is the one that asked for stories, and yet this response surprises her. Not the length — but the content. It makes her think, makes her remember and it's so familiar that she thinks, were it not for the names used this could very well have been something that happened in Kilarria. ]

I take it this is not simply legend, but something that is happening still in the land you hail from, yes? If that is the case, I am glad to hear of its recovery.

You travel between worlds of your own volition?

Fascinating... [ Truly. Anything related to spirits intrigues her given the vast differences between worlds on what constitutes a spirit. ]

Mm! I'm an 'Ascended Magician.' Traveling times and spaces comes with the territory. Though, I obviously haven't managed to leave Genessia yet.

You are correct, though it has been some time now since the Dragonsong War ended. [ a bit over two years for her now if she includes her time in Xistentia. ] Ishgard is still recovering, but the alliance between her people and the Dravanians is holding strong, and Ishgard has opened her gates to the outside world once more.

[Helloooo pretty lady. Nice to see you again.]

I see Hanzo has not stopped in to regal you in his story of two dragon brothers.

No, it's no problem at all!

[He takes a deep breath:]

Back home, there's a Kami called 'Shiro,' who is the Kami of Curses! He can create them and spread them... or even absorb them! I uh heard [transparent lie,] that he's the spirit of a boy who made everyone around him sooo miserable that they believed he was cursed. They believed hard enough to make it real.

[Shi finished with a smile, despite the downer story. Since he himself is the Kami in question, he's hoping this will help him gain faith. It could be a way to be cursed and hated without actually hurting people!]

And, uhhmm I heard he's really unlucky and everyone should definitely blame him. Mmhmm.

[ She perks up a little, leylines sparking. She likes Genji and it sure is good to see him again. ]

I have not had the pleasure of meeting anyone by that name. Perhaps you could tell me in his stead?

[She glowed! He finds that adorable every time. Daww.]

Perhaps it is for the better. You see, he is my brother and he is always mad. A very mad man. See, he was a pirate captain once, ages ago. It suited him well, but all things come to an end. He's lost his ship and crew, forever more to wander in a grouchy mood.

[ Her eyes go wide. ]

Your brother was a pirate captain? [ She seems to be having a difficult time correlating between that and Genji, whom she never once assumed to be a part of anything so... questionable. ] I can imagine one would be upset after losing so much. Has he changed his ways, then?

[Ninja vs Pirate story is a go!]

Oh yes, the most feared pirate captain of the Asian seas, but also the kindest. He has a temper, but he always helps the poor guy. The small people. A bit like Robin Hood. [Like she knows who that is, Genji....]

He's starting to change his ways though. Temper is still there. But I believe him when he says he won't pillage again.

[ You should feel bad for taking advantage of Lioriley's trusting nature by telling her a factually inaccurate story. ]

Robin Hood? [ Yeah she has no idea. ]

That is good to hear, at least. Though I am curious now as to what your profession was back home - if you did not join your brother aboard his ship?

[You asked for a STORY. Not his fault that his brother is the topi--oh it is his fault, huh?]

Robin hood. That's another good story. He robs from the rich to give to the poor, and never takes anything for himself. A very good man.

I? I was a terrible person, too. I am a ninja. Do you know what a ninja is?

If you mean like superheroes with abilities and can do amazing things...

[She paused for a moment.]

No, in my world they only exist in fiction. But heroes in our world are people like police, doctors and fireman. You also get everyday heroes who do good things and can save peoples lives, even if it is something simple like giving up a kidney for another.

Once I loved a spider
When I was born a fly,
A velvet-footed spider
With a gown of rainbow-dye.
She ate my wings and gloated.
She bound me with a hair.
She drove me to her parlor
Above her winding stair.
To educate young spiders
She took me all apart.
My ghost came back to haunt her.
I saw her eat my heart.

[And he's not even going to comment on that poem after it's done. Instead, he just continues on to her other questions.] I knew someone on a hero's journey. She might actually come to be seen as one, if she survives long enough.

Oh, I can talk about a day of celebration that is based on a story in my world.

It's called St Bridget's Day and the story behind it was this:

Bridget was an angel who fell in love with a human, and so in order to allow Bridget to descend to Earth with ease without being spotted, the people would wear outfits adorned with blue feathers in order to allow Bridget to blend in and see the one that she had fallen in love with.

It's not exactly a very long story, but I think it's very sweet.

I see. [ She has a lot of questions about Robin Hood, but Genji is talking about himself now and she's absolutely shocked that he was a 'terrible person'. She can't believe it. CANNOT. ]

I am afraid I do not. Dare I ask you to enlighten me?
