[hello everyone! ryuji suddenly comes into view, grinning like no tomorrow. this post is going to be short, sweet, and to the point!]

'Sup guys! It's my birthday today according to the calendar here. Which is uh, pretty weird to think about, celebrating my birthday in a place like this and not back home...

Anyways! Probs not doin' a party or anythin', but I do wanna see some gifts, and also hear each and every one of you sing me Happy Birthday! Heh!

Oh yeah and 'cause I'm the birthday boy today, you guys gotta do whatever I say! Hey it's the rules man!

[and he doesn't make up the rules.]

[And conveniently downplaying the times when she was hospitalized. Or very nearly so.]

You shouldn't worry about me. I would hate to spoil what should be a special day for you.

Did you have any special plans? Besides presents and public karaoke?

Oof--! [He's visibly started by that slap on the back, and while normally he'd scold him for it... Well, it's Ryuji's birthday, he can let it slide. After taking a moment to compose himself:]

Hello, Ryuji... This is for you. [He holds out the painting, wrapped both to protect it and to avoid spoiling the surprise, elegantly tied off with a ribbon.]

[He smiled slightly. he is going to take a moment or two to think over the lyrics and if he was going to get creative or not.]

Okay, so here I go.

[He coughed for a moment..]

Happy Birthday to you, happy birthday to you, be glad it is calm here, your birthday could have been doomed.

[Well he was a little bit creative. but it wasn't awful like it could have been.]

I figured I would get creative with it.

Oho!

[ryuji snatched up the present from yusuke, opening it and really taking no time to notice the care with which it was wrapped.

it's.... it's...! what is it, exactly?! give ryuji a moment as he stared at it.]

Eh don't worry, it can't be spoiled that easily at all.

[he shook his head.] Nope, that's about it. Don't really want a big party or anythin', just feelin' like taking it easy this year.

Bhahaha! Whoa you really did it!

[he even clapped!] It was a perfect song my man!

Any particular reason why?

[Her tone remained casual, not wanting to overstep. In fact, if he chose not to answer, she would accept that much. But...just in case...the question was put out there.]

Haha, I didn't take you for one who frets over the future. Just idle curiosity; don't mind. Don't worry; this gift ought to fall well within the bounds of normalcy.

[Some random time later, he'd receive a shiny set of rollerblades. It's vaguely related to sports and footwear, so Ted thought the track enthusiast might enjoy a novel way to get around.]

[Surprise! It's an oil painting of... actually it's not immediately obvious. As with most of Yusuke's work, it's a highly abstract piece, made of multiple colours melting into each other -- deep blues, burnished yellows, and reddish violet. The shape and texture of the strokes seem to suggest dense, illuminated clouds or churning waves.

He gives Ryuji time to contemplate it, before he speaks.]

Ah, I knew I had to.

[he also just felt like changing it.]

[...is this really for him? ryuji just stared at it, frowning, as he turned the painting several times in order to see it from other angles.]

It's... uh... [think of something!] Really free. Yeah. It's cool.

Nah- not really. I mostly just like chillin' with some friends and getting gifts.

[he just didn't feel like having some big party here, especially when there were lots of parties popping up.]

That was good enough for me, don't need to get me a birthday present now. Hah!

I... don't think about the future. [which was why he was gonna think about stuff once he gets there.

YO THANKS DUDE THAT'S A GREAT GIFT!]

[Yusuke hums; it's obvious to him, and not so surprising, that Ryuji has no idea what he's talking about. Or looking at, for that matter. Patiently, he explains:]

I drew inspiration from your Persona, Captain Kidd. A dark, stormy seascape, illuminated by brilliant flashes of lightning... That is what I sought to capture. Perhaps you could even say that is my interpretation of your heart, difficult though such things are to depict.

Kidd inspired this?! Whoaaa....

[he looked back to the painting, tilting his head.]

Yeah I think I can see that. Seriously that's way more cool!

[Despite himself, Yusuke can't help but look a little relieved that Ryuji seems to approve.]

I'm glad to hear you say so. It would not do if it didn't resonate with the very person it was intended to depict.

Yeah man it's real cool! I'mma put it up above my bed so I can look at it before I sleep! It'll get me real motivated to do some Phantom Thief duties!

Thatsounds...kind of nice, actually.

When my birthday arrives, I'd probably want the same thing. Just being around friends.

So the song was enough, huh?

I can still get you something, you know.

It's truly that much to your liking? I see... In that case, I'm glad.

Oh yeah? And when's your birthday? Jus' so I know.

Really...?! Well, heh, if you're insisting! I wouldn't mind gettin' another gift.

Well, 'course I like it. I ain't that into art or anythin' but this is real effin' cool! Thanks man!

[and ryuji just pats yusuke's back!]
