Your New Best Friend
As many people know, Old Everglade is largely abandoned and for good reason. New Everglade may have a lot of current residents, but the deeper into Old Everglade you get, well… the more off-kilter and less controllable things get. It’s why most NPCs won’t tread there nowadays unless they really need something.
A teenage boy by the name of Thomas is worried for his sick grandmother. His grandmother is terminally ill and, though taken care of at Everglade’s Nightingale Care Institution, is likely not to make it through to the new year and told him about a childhood toy she had back when she used to live in Old Everglade. For this reason, Thomas ventured into Everglade’s abandoned areas and found the toy- this doll seems to have made friends, however, and in chasing it it led him to a very, very old bridge. The bridge was rickety, barely standing, but determined to see his grandmother smile one last time, Thomas persevered.
This was not the best idea Thomas has ever had. Crossing the bridge broke a series of seals that had been placed onto the bridge to cordon off an island known as the Isle of Doll. Thomas’s grandmother’s doll had been from outside of it and had been coaxed into bringing a human there to break the seal so they could become true friends, and in doing so released the dolls from the island. Though the island was small, it was filled with hundreds of abandoned dolls, all lining the edge of the island. They move in jerky, rickety movements as if they should not be moving at all. And now they’re out, and they’re coming to Everglade to find new friends. Forever friends. Friends that won’t ever, ever be able to leave them. Ever again.
PROMPTS
- A. Newfound Friend
This doll just bonded with you. It may not be the best-looking buddy you've ever made, but it's following you around now. It looks like other people are having similar issues. Maybe you should bond with someone over this experience? Or.. try various ways to get rid of it? If you can...
B. Black Market
If you're looking for ways to get rid of a doll, it isn't exactly standard fare for the old man and the Rabbit's Foot. This isn't a common problem! Maybe you should check over at the black market? You know, that weird alleyway you know is there but you know better than to go to... hopefully you won't run into any trouble. Or-- oh my god, is that guy trying to sell you a shrunken head? How is that supposed to help?
C. The Rabbit's Foot
Okay, you tried the Rabbit's Foot after all. And it is packed. Maybe there aren't any anti-doll spells hanging around, but that isn't stopping people from taking advantage of the sale on exorcism sage. Careful not to get trampled! Maybe it's a good place to hear rumors about how to get rid of these guys?
D. Dollhouse
One of Everglade's premier estates has been broken into.. and probably for good reason. After hearing a rumor about the dolls just wanting new friends, people have been trying to break into the Dollhouse Estate and.. well, it's really only been making things worse. (While the lock is broken and rumors are afloat, feel free to have your character wander in and interact with the house's apparent curse however you please.)
E. Ever After
Some people had a different idea about how to deal with these dolls. A pack of werewolves in Everglade decided that they were going to join them in holy matrimony. That way they'll never be alone, right!? Join the werewolves at one of Everglade's chapels to try to marry your doll to another doll... just be careful the dolls themselves don't get any ideas.
F. Who you gonna call?
The E-X-Terminators are on the case! Or not. If you're the heroic type, you might want to help out a team of exterminators that got trapped in a sewer by a pack of dolls that they tried to burn to a crisp as a means of getting rid of them. Save them Obi-wan Kenobi, you're their only hope! (Or save any party of NPCs that seems to have gotten caught up trying to get rid of a bunch of dolls intent on keeping them where they can never leave them.)
G. Isle of Doll
Look at you! You made it to the dolls' spawning ground, so to speak. Now's your chance to help the doll rest back on the island by bringing a new friend for them to play with. We don't recommend using one of the Dollhouse's dolls, since they'll head right back home. Be careful of ghosts and other grudgely hauntings on the island though- they were there for a while, and things might get spooky.
H. Wildcard!
You're always welcome to come up with your own top levels, these are just some things happening around Everglade to get you going!
