[Chapter 1] The Confused Man - Audio/Video

[The transmission might crackle and rustle, and all one can see is a deep reddish shadow, as if someone has their thumb over the camera. A husky tenor voice with a cultured sound to it speaks.]

What is the manner of this device or engine? To what purpose was it built for? It appears to pertain to communication, but how does it function?

[A light clearing of the throat.]

Excuse me, I am Mister Howard P. Lovecraft, formerly of Providence, Rhode Island, and now... by some mysterious means, transported to this fair city. Might anyone explain as to why we are brought to this place, myself in particular, as I have... a writing deadline to meet. [He sounds rather concerned by this fact.]

[At length, the reddish shadow moves away and the speaker, a lantern-jawed man in his early forties, dark blond hair and grey eyes, comes into view, studying the device.

You've been kidnapped, essentially. It's a rather harmless, kidnapping, granted, but you're stuck here.

On the other hand, though, you likely do not need to worry about your deadline.

I'm afraid you're in a rather unusual circumstance, Mr. Lovecraft. It's all a bit convuluted, but, essentially, the core of it is this: you're being kept here in this city for at least some time, as are the rest of us.

The device is just for talking to others in the same situation. it's a pretty amazing device that I wish I could take apart and see how it worked exactly.

As for the device, think of it as a wireless telephone that can send sounds and moving pictures.

From what I've been told it's not just one city? It's actually several cities that feed into one in the middle.

Are you perhaps familiar with the idea of there being other worlds out there? That there might exist an entirely separate reality to the life on Earth, you had been living up to this moment who's veil you could pierced however unintentionally? If you understand these concepts, you can more easily grasp your present situation.

It was the year 1932, in the world that I ...lately vanished from. It was already a time of rapid development in new technologies, and I have a strong feeling that more have been invented since that time.

I take it that you're from my future?

I take it, in that case, that this device is a hybrid of a telephone and a motion picture camera, allowing us to see each other in the moment that we're speaking.

The thought crossed my mind, that I had stumbled, somehow, into a world that would bring wonder and amazement to Monsieur Verne's clever mind. I take it that you, too, are an admirer of his work?

I believe so, yes. It's pretty amazing what people can come up with anyway. Who knows how much more advanced this device can get if someone could work on it.
