Neil's voice comes from Charlie's elbow, where he's standing over her with his thumbs hooked in the belt loops of his jeans with a broad, openly fond smile. He's not worried about Charlie with a business to run--she's strong, she's smart, and she's not alone--but things about it nag at him. Nothing that should nag at a father, but do because he knows things most fathers don't.
The fear that comes from doing something alone. The relief of a safety net, someone close who can help. The healing power of knowing that somewhere, some place, there's one or more people that care enough to be concerned.
So he makes a point of popping up when she's not expecting him, rarely offering advice or asking after her, but always trying out the menu or praising what she's doing right because she's got this--and if the day comes when she doesn't, she knows he's around.
Leaning over, Neil kisses the top of her head and circles the table to pull out the chair across from her and make himself comfortable.
"She'd try to make you eat healthy--but we fire bugs need our calories. Still, protein does last longer if you're metabolism ramps up. Means you can go longer without havin' to stop for a meal break. Say the word and I'll go grab you a burger or somethin'."
