[video] Sabo's re-intro

[Sabo clicks on the device, propping it onto a sizeable rock with a flat, smooth surface. He then takes a few steps backward to wave into the camera. He's smiling, but there are obvious bags under his eyes. He's tired.]

Hello.

[He's so tired, in fact, that he stifles a quiet yawn before continuing.]

I remember this place. Been here before. But -- [He glances around, gesturing casually, before facing the camera again.] For seven months, I was somewhere else. And now, I'm back here. [And not home. Which is a serious problem. Reverie has to have come and gone, and he wasn't there. He has no clue what had happened during it, none at all. And that's terrifying.]

If you know me, great. If not, my name is Sabo.

[He hesitates on what to say next. Thoughts of what had happened to him in Duplicity swirl around in his mind, and his expression reads that he's not too keen on thinking about that. He tugs on the end of a glove, shifting uncomfortably.]

I'll be getting situated here shortly. Let me know if you have a job opening or a place for me to stay for the time being. I'd appreciate it.

Well, well, if it ain't the Warmonger.

'S been a bit an' a buncha shit's gone down but the takeaway's that everthin's pretty much the same, 'cept some a us inherited ranches. So if y' want a place t' stay an' y' don't mind the smell a animals in the mornin', there's a place in Windgate y' can bunk out in. Won't mind keepin' y' 'round long term if yer good at pushin' paperwork through. Whatcha think?

[Happy wake up, Sabo. Have a close up of Ace, because he's stupidly excited and his phone is being held way too close because his brother is back.] You came back! Damn, I missed you!

[That just makes him laugh. Honestly, after his time in the city of Duplicity, this technology here doesn't really even faze him anymore. To see his brother's face that up close, though, reminds him of the fact that it took a while for himself to get used to spacing his face from the camera at a decent length.]

I am! I just can't seem to go back home, for some reason. [He really doesn't want to talk about where he's been, though, so he'll try to change the subject.] How have you been?

As you've named me, yes.

Ranches? [He's certainly not used to caring for animals. Karasu's crows don't really count.] I don't know if I'm up for that kind of thing. Paperwork is certainly something I'm used to doing, though. Been -- a long time since I've been able to just organize and write down important notes and memos for work.

[A really long time.]

[Ace is usually okay about how he uses the phone, but he's just so excited right now. And he ends up fumbling around for a bit, trying to find a place to lean the phone up against so he can talk without fuss.] Where'd you go, then? [He brought it up, so Ace has to ask.] I'm good, busy but in a fun kinda way.

He should've known Ace would ask. Better to talk about where he'd been in person as opposed to over the device, at least.]

I think it'd be better to talk about this in person. Where do you want to meet up?

[Sabo is his brother. Of course he's going to want to know about his life, what's happened, where he's been.

He also notices the way the feel of the conversation shifts. Maybe he should have kept his mouth shut? But then again, if there's something wrong, it's important for Ace to know and be available for Sabo.] You wanna get something to eat again? 'Cause there's a Chinese place that's pretty good. Or we can just meet up at your room. I'm... [Ace pauses.] Kinda living in a couple of places right now. I don't stay in one spot. So I can't just offer for you to come see me.

[Sabo doesn't really have a room here, yet. He'd just arrived again, after all, and his old place was -- well, it wasn't safe. So he'd rather not live there if at all possible.]

I can't really talk about where I've been in public, so a restaurant is out. And I don't really -- [A pause:] have a place of my own here. So -- [He lowers his head and places a gloved hand to his chin as he audibly thinks, a soft hum escaping his lips.] could we just go where you're staying today, then?

[There are so many mental alarms going off.]

Yeah. I'm kinda staying in Fayren for now. Large blue house with the seagull mailbox. Can you get there soon? [Ace is actually nervous. What could have happened, that would make Sabo so private? Is it important work for him? Something dangerous?] If you don't wanna go there I can figure something else out.

[He gives one quick, but firm nod.]

I'll be there.

[With that, he shuts off his device and heads off; it doesn't take too long for him to find the house described to him, and once he arrives, he knocks on the door. As he waits for a response, his hand reaches toward his neck, almost on instinct. Is the brand gone? He'd never actually made his way to a mirror to check, so he quickly whips out the device and attempts to use his reflection to see.

When Ace opens the door, he'll be greeted by his brother staring into a blank screen.]

See you soon. [Ace doesn't even officially live in the Blue Horizon household, but after three night in a row here without actually leaving it's easier than getting stuff together and running back to Marco's place for the sake of having another spot to talk. That, and he's got food here they can share and drinks too, so it's nice and safe and quiet. Especially with the entire household gone for the time being.

He gets dressed, and tidies up a bit so Sabo can talk comfortably. It's a bit loud with the dogs here, so they're let outside for a bit and he opens up the windows of the house for a little airflow. The price to pay for staying with multiple smokers is a home that smells like it. And goodness, Sabo gets there faster than expected. Ace catches him staring at his phone when he opens the door, but he doesn't know what's going on.] You okay? C'mon, get in.

[As soon as the door is opened, Sabo is hit with the smell of smoke. It's certainly not the most pleasant scent to deal with, but he just makes a slight face and says nothing of it. If Ace had decided to take up smoking, so be it. There's no point in protesting, even if he thinks it's a bad idea.

He shoves the phone under his jacket and walks inside before speaking. His tone of voice is calm, despite the topic he's going to discuss.]

I'm alright. [He'll sit down on the nearest chair or sofa, immediately crossing his legs.] Question: do I have anything on my neck? [He gestures to his neck with a finger.] Couldn't get a decent reflection on the screen, and I had a brand there for seven months. I figured it's gone now, since I'm not in that city anymore. [He's slightly concerned that it's still there somehow.]

[Ace looks apologetic when Sabo makes the face. He really does feel bad about the smell.] Sorry. Couldn't get it aired out enough. Between Rosinante and Smoker it's like living inside of a chimney when I stay here. If you wanna sit outside, we can do that. But the dogs are out there. And they're kinda noisy. And big. So pick your poison.

[Ace closes the door behind him and locks it.] Your neck? [Ace leans in and takes a good look at Sabo's neck. A brand? What the fuck is that business about? There's nothing good about that statement in his mind, save for maybe the fact that it's gone now.] I don't see anything. Why would you have a damn brand there?

HELLO AGAIN, I REMEMBER YOU!! WOWIE, IT'S GREAT THAT YOUR BACK!!! TORCHWOOD NEVER HEARD BACK ABOUT YOUR APPLICATION, OR EVEN IF YOU APPLIED AT ALL!!!!

THIS'LL GIVE PEOPLE A LOT OF HOPE FOR OTHERS WHO DISAPPEAR TO REAPPEAR TOO!

[Admittedly, she is curious to ask where he's been for seven months...]

[He's halfway tempted to ask why Ace is over at Smoker's place, but decides not to. He has enough on his mind at the moment, anyway, considering the heavy place he'd came from. When he hears confirmation that the brand is gone, he lets out a weighted sigh of relief and leans forward, propping his elbow on one of his knees. His chin rests in his hand.]

I had a brand where I was. Wouldn't go away, and I couldn't cover it up. I was curious if it left upon arrival. [Now, the answer to why he had one there is going to be a bit of a mess, so he pauses before continuing.]

You should sit. It's a long explanation.

[He's cringing. That yelling -- he remembers it all too well.]

Ah -- please don't yell so loud! [He has to step away from his device so he doesn't go completely deaf. Which means that HE has to yell to be heard.]

I never applied! I left before I had the chance to! [But the fact that they're still looking for employees is a good sign.]

[Sabo's expression is similar to that of a deer caught in headlights right now, because he recognizes her from the city. Though -- there's a good chance that this Rip isn't the same one.

This is all confusing, to say the least.]

I've spoken to him already. I'm glad that he's been doing well.

[Which is more than he can say about himself.]

How about you? How have you been?

[His reaction kind of makes her pause for a moment.]

Vell good. I know he's going to be thrilled you're back. I'm sure most of us are. Az for me, I've been doing fine! It's been quiet around here lately zo zhere hasn't been too much excitement going on.

[He's glad he made an impression!]

OKAY, I WON'T! BECAUSE I HAVEN'T BEEN YELLING AT ALL!!

[It's all a matter of perspective, and from his perspective, his voice is gorgeous.]

THEN I HAVE GOOD NEWS: THE CHANCE IS STILL VERY MUCH THERE!! AND YOU ALSO HAVE THE CHANCE TO VOTE FOR ME IN THE ELECTIONS COMING UP!!!

[Ace is honestly glad he's not asking. There is absolutely not good way to explain why he's been staying in a house with three Marines. But thankfully it's just ignored and unsaid and Ace doesn't have to deal with the issue right now. And he can focus on the brand that had been, the place Sabo had been, and paying full attention to his brother.]

Okay. But first, are you gonna want a drink? Because this sounds like a need a drink conversation.

[He nods slightly at that offer, since this will certainly be a conversation best suited with drinks.]

Sure. I'll take whatever you have. [He appreciates it.] It's nice not having to ask for everything like I had to the past seven months.

Be right back. [Ace gets up, and heads into the kitchen so he can rummage around until he can find some rum. He's not comfortable at all with this so far, and his stomach is doing flips and flops in response to the stress.] Hey, Sabo? [He calls out, after getting the bottle.] You want something to mix it with? I've got cola here. [He's getting a taste for mixed drinks. Straight from the bottle is fine, but he doesn't usually do it that way anymore unless he's miserable.

This conversation might make him that way. So he grabs a couple of cans of soda, a couple of glasses, and heads back in. And he sets up at the coffee table so they can both have some liquid support for wherever this goes.]

[He's thinking of how to start this conversation while Ace heads to the kitchen, and he's a bit lost in thought when he hears his name being called. So, it takes a second to respond. When he does, it's a simple 'Sure,' and nothing else.

As Ace returns, Sabo perks up a bit and smiles, reaching for one of the cans to pop the top open. He then pours about one-third of the drink into the glass, pouring some rum in soon after. He takes a sip.]

So, I'm not sure how to begin this. I -- I've been in a city for the past seven months that -- [His eyes fall to the glass, and he finds himself staring at the drink for a moment.] divided its citizens into one of two categories. Dominants and Submissives. [He quickly adds:] I was just assigned one of those titles. Those roles.

I had a brand because I was a Submissive. I was -- [Now that he isn't there anymore, he's tempted to say 'slave,' because that's how it felt, for the most part. But that word -- he hates it, he hates how it makes him think of Koala and everyone else he knew who was one at some point in their lives, and how they had no choice but to be branded and live that way.] not given many rights. Couldn't work, couldn't buy anything, not without a Dominant's permission.

[Ace's drink follows about the same proportion of soda, but there's more rum in his. He's already nearly scared about this, worried about what sort of trouble that Sabo's gotten himself into, and he starts drinking immediately. And it's not a moment too soon, because when Sabo starts talking Ace feels his anger rising. Bubbling up in a way that he hasn't experienced since coming here. It's been so long since he's been this damn mad, and he doesn't know how to process it.

Dominant and submissive are terms he knows from sex, and he knows them from something that supposed to be about preferences and control being willingly given. This isn't anything like that from how he sees it, and this reeks of slavery from the sound of it.] Sabo... [Yeah, he's going to go ahead and pour more into his cup, and he downs the entire thing in one go. Sorry, Smoker. This bottle isn't going to make it past this talk. Maybe another bottle will be sacrificed to Ace's stomach too, if it heads in the direction that it seems to be heading.] Were you a slave? How are you now?
