It had been some time since Diablo had arrived in this place. The Lord of Terror spent some time sussing out the nature of its inhabitants. None bore the demonic taint or the angelic heritage of the humans on Sanctuary, and though some held power, none were Nephalem either. To make things more confusing to the demon, the plains of Pandemonium, and the Burning Hells were cut off from his senses. As if the entire place was one massive soulstone, trapping the inhabitants in some odd world.

The Lord of Terror had also grown bored and hungry over the days he spent in Leah's form, under the radar, and decided it was time to rectify that. As such, he made his way to Attleton, found a nice wealthy looking house and approached it. Sensing none were watching, he kicked in the door, discarding Leah's form and taking on the more monstrous form he felt most at home in. With ease he slaughtered the residents, charring the ceilings and painting pentagrams and runes in the blood of the residents across the walls. Once all life had been extinguished within the house, he realized something. They did not fear him. They acted terrified in the moment, but he could not taste the fear in the air as he should. Yet another mystery of this place...

[Some time later, after reassuming Leah's form, Diablo took out the communicator and pointed it at himself. He was seated at a cafe in Genessia City now, with a look of... unease on the girl's face.]

I know I haven't been here long, but... is there something wrong with the people here? It's like... they're all hollow inside...

[OOC: Anyone in Attleton is more than welcome to come across the scene of the crime. Diablo isn't the type to really clean up after himself, but given his nature, doesn't leave much in the way of clues behind. People are more than welcome to check it out though!]

They're certainly proud, and fond of their routines. You're not the first to comment on some vague metaphysical shallowness. Still, let's treat them lovingly just the same.

There is something different about them. I can't really place what it is but I've notice some things after the shadow's attacked...

I don't believe you were here for that but the shadow's didn't really do much to those who live here. It's just us and those affected lost their emotions.

I thought something was different about the people here, but I always assumed it was normal for the people here since not all worlds are the same.

[For all he knew there could be worlds where people are hollow inside for one reason or another, so he couldn't say it was awfully suspicious right off the bat.]

I... don't think there is anything wrong with them. It's not very nice to say that either I don't think.

It's not just... vague metaphysical shallowness. See, where I am from, humans are the result of unions between Angels and Demons seeking refuge from the Eternal Conflict. They bear both the Angels' light and the Demons' darkness, bound to none. It's why the Angels and Demons fear humans. My mother taught me to sense a person's spirit by searching for those aspects in a person...

...these people have... less than nothing in that regard. It's just... perplexing.

No, I haven't been here very long. Though a spirit that drains the emotions of its victims... almost sounds like a demon under Envy or Jealousy's domains...

Well... this is... different. My mother taught me to sense a person's spirit by seeing the Angelic and Demonic light that every human on my world carries. I've met others that didn't have those lights, but had something even if I couldn't identify it. The rest don't have... anything.

[There was a pause as Leah blinked, hiding the demon's amusement. The boy had spunk.]

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to offend... it's just... in my world, humans were the result of unions between Angels and Demons seeking an escape from the Eternal Conflict. Every human in my world has traces of both within them and my mother taught me to sense that. Some of the people I've met here are different, but have something radiating from within. The people that don't have these pendant things... don't seem to have... anything...

Envy or Jealousy? Like the sins?

[Levy reads a lot though she doesn't know if this persons world is somehow broken up by these descriptions or if it means something else entirely.]

I don't really know anything like that but they had no emotion at all... [Not even jealous, envy, hate or anger.] It's like they are husks.

He laughed. "Oh is that where they come from? Goodness, family reunions must be trouble. I'd love to be a fly on the wall when an angel or demon tried to explain their trysts to their no doubt disapproving superiors. And such curious angels and demons too, to fear their children. There can't have been much proper discipline in a household when the tykes are terrors.

But I digress; explain yourself. However spiritually empty something may be, how it could it be 'less than nothing'? I've never heard of a feat so mean."

It's a fact. I've spoken personally with the Archangel of Justice, Tyrael. He helped forge the Horradrim to stave off the Prime Evils' influence.

[She sighs, rubbing at her temple in thought for a second.]

Okay... think of people as a lit candle. The essence I can sense is the flame. When a person dies, or their soul is removed from their body, the flame is gone but the candle is still there. These people feel like a candelabra that hasn't ever seen a candle.

Demons that embody the sins, though they serve Azmodan, the Lord of Sin and one of the seven Lords of Hell... but if Envy or Jealousy were involved, the people wouldn't be this... docile.

Envy and Jealousy are just that, they envy everything and seek to take it for themselves. A demon under their control could strip away everything that makes you you, and leave you an empty husk destined to do the same to others.

"Oh, I don't doubt the veracity. But what a funny fact. And what's a 'Horradrim'? I wouldn't mind having a staff set against prime evils myself."

He frowned as the sprites of the world were continually dumped on. Not cool, Leah. So uncool that he lets out an "mm" as his final word on the matter. He was charged with protecting those counterfeit creatures, after all, and could do without the discouragement.

So are you saying something alone the lines of they don't have spirits...or I assume souls is another word for it or something?

Well for all we know they have a reason for that. Maybe they might be hiding it or something. We don't know a lot about then, sure but doesn't mean they have nothing.

I don't think it's that. [Except now she's going to keep a look out for it.] The people here have always been a little different.

I think us being here helps them.

...Do you mean the people who are actually native to this world? I don't think there's anything wrong with them...just how this world works, I suppose...

[She shrugs.]

I've only been here for a few months myself, but I've met many people from different worlds, and they've been nice so far.

The pendants are supposed to mark us as 'real' aren't they? That seems to imply the normal inhabitants of this aren't, right?

Perhaps they're constructs that just exist for our benefit. It kind of fits with the thematics of everything, wouldn't it? That housing and work are never hard to get as long as you have the will.

That would make sense, I guess... but that only opens up the question of why we're here if they're to benefit us somehow.

Interesting... I wonder what they get out of us being here.

Spirits, souls, light, whatever you want to call it. But yeah, they feel... empty.

It's... hard to put into words really. It may be normal here, just... it's so different than what I'm used to.

Yeah, they're nice enough just.. I don't know how to describe the empty feeling they give.

Interesting and yet on the outside of the barrier here there are plenty of spirits. Yet we don't know the reason for such things.

[How would they know to find out anyway?]

The spirits of Genessia told me its because we're 'compatible.'

I know that not everyone is happy to be here, but I actually am. I like to think they're just trying to give us good lives.

It's different than what I might be use to as well, but we can always try and get to know them.

[A barrier? Interesting. It might be that all one had to do was bring this barrier down and let Hell march in...]

What is known about this barrier?

I don't know much about it. I just know I'll be putting my own little barrier up to know if it should ever break again, so we have some kind of warning.
