I just realized...I've been in Genessia for a whole year now. I remember the day I arrived like it happened yesterday. I remember... ~~[being kidnapped by...]~~ ...meeting Koishi...and Terra was another one of the first people I've met here. I think I've come a long way since then... I remember how scared I was, particularly of humans, since I had not encountered one before then, and I wasn't sure how they would react to dragons. But for the most part, they've treated me kindly, and I'm grateful for that. I was inflicted with a plague when I first arrived, but after my visit to the dream docks, I was cured, and I've become more powerful than ever. I don't like to brag, but...I feel proud of what I have achieved. I am also glad to have brought in my subarchway, so I can share my experience in Genessia with my clan.

Now...I have a rather...strange question. In my world, the dragons of my clan train themselves in battle in a journey that we refer to as The Passage. We battle against the various beasts in Sornieth to improve are skills and powers. Now that we're here in Genessia, resuming the Passage has been...difficult, with the lack of opponents. Now...I know there are many powerful fighters here, but these are frankly battles to the death, and I would not wish that upon anyone here.

So, I was wondering if there are strong wildlife opponents for my clan to fight in order to resume their Passage. Unfortunately, Everglade is off limits, and the creatures there were hatchlings' play anyway. So, if anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. I know this sounds morbid, but...we feel that it's necessary. We are essentially a warrior clan, after all.

Would you mind terribly if I ask you some questions? The only other dragon I met was sort of a fake one, and it couldn't talk or do anything interesting, much less have rituals.

The fire ruins? They're not actually made of fire, are they? Or are they just extremely hot?

[That's an important thing, since most of her dragon friends hate fire.]

Also, are they large enough for dragons to fit into? Most of my friends are much larger than I am.

Do you ever have to deal with stupid swordsmen who think they must defeat you to get stronger? How old are you, and how old is your culture? Are the other dragons as pretty as you?

Fire creatures...all right. We train ourselves not to be afraid of enemies that hold the elemental advantage. After all, there are times when we must overcome the odds.

[She listens, trying to take in all the questions. She really didn't expect this many.]

That's...a lot of questions. I'll see about answering them all. My name is Azalea, and I eat insects. I haven't had to fight any swordsmen who think they must defeat me to become stronger. I was hatched two years ago, but our clan's culture has sort of been altered a few months later, when a devastating plague struck our lair. Our leader had to raise an entirely new clan to fight it, and that's when he began assigning them to take the Passage. The other dragons...there are many lovely ones...but also others with less fortunate colors. But our matriarch is determined to make them all beautiful.

I think human children are adorable, although they're quite a handful. Everglade is off limits because Fai banned us for fighting the creatures there. The justice system...if someone causes trouble, our leader thrashes them. Or he'll just scold them if it's a minor offense.

[She lets out a sigh.] ...Did I get them all?

Oh! What kind of insects do you eat? Are there favorites? How many dragons are there?

Yes, I'm living in my subarchway with my clan in Fayren. For insects, I'll eat just about any kind. The larger ones tend to be more nutritious, however. As for dragons, there are roughly 30 in my clan. For the population of Sornieth, there are billions of us.

Well, I don't know what I can offer other than free bugs, but you should come hang out at Sycamore Cycles in Genessia if you have the time.

They can even fly here! Which I guess isn't that amazing for you, but for us it's really advanced!

I see. I think the Lightning dragons would like things like that.

[Since it's the Lightning flight that is into all that technology.]

I see.... if you don't mind my asking, what kind are you?

I'm a Fae dragon. The Fae are the smallest known dragon breed in Sornieth so far.

So lightning dragons like metalworks and gadgets, faes like eating insects, can you do magic? Or how do you fight?

Well, the Lightning dragons like the gadgets. The Fire dragons are the metalworkers. I am a Fire dragon myself, but I've been living in the Nature flight all my life, and we take care of the flora and fauna.

I do fight with magic, yes. I can cast spells and heal my allies, and I can reflect the enemy magic back at the caster.

Yeah? So fire likes forging, makes sense, but you live in nature, and do healing. [Swallowing his "WOW!" again.]

Pretty impressive. Usually people in my world can only do one special ability. Healing or barriers. Well, it depends. There's doctors, but...

[Runs a hand through his hair thinking.] How many types are there?

Right now, there are thirteen breeds...but there may be more that may appear in the future. There are also eleven elements. Each dragon is aligned with one of the elements.

Fire, nature, and lightning are the elements?

Is there a smoke one?

Yes...Fire, Nature, and Lightning are three of the eleven elements. There's no smoke one, though...

Pity.

What other types are there? Let me guess... earth, air, water.... salt?

Yes, there is Earth and Water...and Wind. And then there's Ice, Arcane, Light, Shadow, and Plague.

Huh. Not that much like my world's fairy tales then. So the breeds are determined by the elements? What about the other two? Or are they separate from each other?

Well, not exactly. When the elemental gods first gave birth to dragonkind, each one created a breed, some of them have created two. For example, the Fae breed was originally birthed by the Arcanist. But when dragons mate, their offspring will inherit the breed of one of the parents. The element is determined by the nest in which they hatched. So any dragon hatched in the Nature domain will be a Nature dragon.

There is an arena that nullifies death, you know. I think, anyway. It used to be in Attleton, but I haven't been there to see it for myself in a while.

[If it really does nullify death, then the dragons can give it their all without fear of dying or killing potential allies.]

I can personally attest to the fact that it worked just fine the last time I was there. People who die in the arena came back instantly in the local hospital, cost-free.

That is certainly good to know. Many of our clan members have died in the Passage back home already. I wouldn't want to lose any more of them.

Yeah, sure. But I have to wonder, if the whole point is proving strength... is it cheating to go somewhere you can't really die? Kind of takes the tension out of it.

It's not just about proving strength. It's more about survival than anything. It's true that removing the possibility of death would remove the tension, but what other option do we have?

Find someone willing to fight to the death and just go at it.

Ha. I've yet to meet anyone who's willing to fight to the death when they have the choice.

That makes sense! So their element determines the place they were born, but then they can move to other places. Like islands. [Nod nod.]

So does each element have its own culture and traditions?

No...it's the other way around. The place they were born determines their element.

The different flights have their own traditions and professions, like I mentioned. Lightning and Fire dragons are hard workers with their technology and metalwork. Light and Arcane dragons like to study and learn as much as they can about the world and beyond.

Oh... I see. I think.

What about shadow and plague? [Those sound evil :T] They sound like pirates.

Shadow dragons are the most mischievous. They like to play pranks on others. The Plague dragons are survivors, the most savage of them. They love to pit themselves against the other elements. They like to collect bones from their enemies.

Pranks aren't too bad.

Collecting bones sounds a bit odd though. What do they do with them all?

They keep the bones as trophies, mainly. In fact, there's one Plague dragon in my clan who wears the bones as trinkets.

Still sounds like pirates.

But I guess some marines can be like that too.

There's one dragon in my clan who's a pirate as well. Or...he tries to be, anyway.
