A fellow named Guy Fawkes was involved in a plot to destroy Parliament using gunpowder.

He failed and was caught and hanged. people celebrate the failure to blow up the government with fireworks and bonfires with effigies of Guy Fawkes. It's better than letting all that gunpowder go to waste.

[Now that he thought about it, that 'holi'day wasn't especially holy; burning a Catholic for a traitor wasn't his cup of tea. Then again this one looks to be way too young to really understand that, so maybe they'll just indulge in the 100% innocent fun of making explosives. For the kids!]
