Seventeenth Reel: Guess Who's Back [MULTIPLE PROMPTS]

[Action: Genessia, backdated to Friday]

[Midday, Grell stares into a clothing store, seemingly mesmerized with the mannequins and their attire for the day. But if anyone looks closer, they could tell that she's not really looking at them. She's looking at her own reflection in confusion.]

...where is it... [She touches her neck with her fingers, where her mark (ooc: #2) of the crew she belongs to is.] Was it real?

[Talking to herself, mostly, but anyone could hear. Just...don't startle her.]

[Video, present day]

[As the sun begins its descent, Grell sits on the steps to the sheriff's office. There is enough light to do a video, luckily. Sitting at the top of the stairs is her dog, Copper, who seems content with watching the scenery.]

As most of you know, City Guardian elections are approaching, and while I do plan to run again, there are a few things I'd like to state. The reason I'm bringing them up now is because they will be something I'll strive for, whether I'm elected or not.

First, the appointment for Deputy Guardians in Everglade will not fall upon whomever gets elected City Guardian, but will be voted upon. I believe it is imperative for City Guardians to set an example that-- [Grell begins counting on her fingers] they can work with anyone, that they will allow the citizens to choose who works closely with the elected Guardian, and that they accept that those elected deputies will act as a check against the Guardian's judgement.

Those that wish to run must be of adult age, have no criminal record in the city they're running in, and must not have criminal offenses in more than two cities. Other stipulations may apply, but those are the most important.

Second, and this is just an idea that popped up not long ago, I strongly believe that those who lose their lives here should have at least one session of psychiatric counseling. Most will be opposed to it, as it is quite personal to talk to a stranger about your feelings, but there are those who might see this as a benefit they didn't believe they needed, and coming back from a traumatic experience weighs heavily on the mind.

Of course, opting out after the first session would be at the person's discretion.

[She sighs and then Copper pushes at her shoulder with a paw.]

Maybe people who haven't died can stop making suggestions for something they haven't experienced, especially when they have no real emotional investment in anyone who has.

Oh, my bad. I meant people who've died here. You know, all the cool kids are doing it. But since you clearly understand with your wide range of empathy and all and you're obviously doing it because you care and not because you're clearly not the best dressed Guardian and I think we both know who is, did you go to a psychiatrist when you arrived here? A psychiatrist who probably is from this world and consequently has no capability of really understanding and would be about as helpful as talking to someone on one of the city streets.

That just gave me another idea. Why not just talk to one of the city natives? It's faster, cheaper, and you get the exact same result. Go do your actual job, Grell.

Man, the voting for deputies thing is such a good fucking idea. All the cities should state that. But I don't know if I can agree on the "must be of adult age" thing. That's no guarantee on anything. The wisest people I know sure as shit weren't adults.

Does that really help? The psychiatric help thing?

*Faye's been doing a bit of shopping herself, a couple of bags resting in the crook of her arm. She sees Grell, now realising she hasn't seen her in some time, and stands reasonably close for a moment or two, just staring*

I don't think I need to see a shrink just because I got eaten alive once, thanks. But if anyone else wants to go see a quack, then they can go right ahead.

True. It would depend on their experience, and if they wish to attend schooling here. But I'm rather surprised the idea hasn't come up before.

[With a sigh, Grell shrugs her shoulder.] Having an unbiased ear on hand wouldn't hurt.

Speaking of which, are you done posturing questions, Mister Arc?

[If he replies, it may be the last he'll make, since she's just going to block him from any posts or comments she makes from now on.]

[She sighs] Yes, I have. [It's a name she wants to re-establish in some way.]

It's one thing to hold a grudge, but across timelines? Even from you, that's surprising.

I've had to reassure people here that birds go a bit crazed during spring, and to pay you no mind. That's what!

[She sounds very, very angry.]

[She turns her head quickly, enough to cause whiplash in humans. Upon seeing that the voice belongs to Faye, images of their time as crew mates appears before her eyes. Grell is aware that the other woman probably has no recollection of such a time, so she tries to relax.]

I always forget school is, like, a thing that exists. I'm pretty sure the idea came up but everyone just wanted to hand the positions off to their buddies instead and ignored it. The mayor would be so disappointed in our lack of democracy.

So you've never tried it? Do we even have unbiased ears around here? I'm pretty sure the network has been void of anyone going, "Who wants to take some therapy art classes and talk about our feelings?"

[He just shrugs. She didn't answer any of his questions and she's not the only one capable of creating a filter to use all the time to lock a single person out.]

I appreciate the concern, but isn't dying enough? Do you have to force people through therapy on top of that? I know if I died here, it's the last thing I'd want.

[ Thanks, but no thanks. Tough soldiers don't even have feelings to talk about, sheesh. ]

Honestly, I didn't know it was a thing here. In my own world, psychiatry was still new, as the human brain was just beginning to be understood, let alone treated. In the last three worlds I was in, it wasn't something on our to do list.

You have a point. At the least, people should be given an open, available option they can use without strings attached.

[Silence. He spoke the most during their conversation, so she's a little surprised. Grell pushes up her glasses a bit before speaking]

If I had known psychiatry was a medical field upon arrival, as in a thriving medical field, I would have studied it. But I wasn't even aware, so I never went. It was never something that gained a footing back home, and certainly not a priority in the last three worlds I've lived in.

[When your priorities are survival, no one really cares about the psyche.]

That would be the better solution. I think after a violent death people would appreciate having a choice even more than usual.

[There is a soft chuckle.] A bit ironic, but I agree. I'd advocate a tropical vacation if it were feasible.

No. Absolutely no tropical vacations. [He is scowling at that. Bad topic. Very touchy topic.] Beaches are a terrible thing.

All I have to guy by with that shit is just movies and literally anything Rose said for a while but she was better at prodding you into spewing shit you didn't want to admit than calming people who probably have some serious PTSD. I'm pretty sure any doctors that came in here don't even touch on that field. We'd probably have to go for like a AA meeting kind of deal if anyone was serious about it. You know like where you all go, "Hello my name is Dave and I've lost count of my deaths blah blah..."

Psychiatry is one of those doctorate jobs, isn't it? I think there's a school for higher education or whatever, but it still takes several years. In the meantime, I don't really want someone picking up a book on psychology and expecting people to talk to them because I feel like some people here would do that.

The AA part isn't important because we're not trying to solve alcoholism but the general idea I was going for is that. Like everyone with a problem talks to everyone else with a problem and people who got over their problem so they could all have less of a problem? You know what I mean?

Not really, but preferable, if I must. I'm not much of a vacation type at all, but cold places are acceptable.

[ He actually prefers work vacations. ]

I believe I follow. There's enough of us with problems, so do you expect there to be less problems over time?

[Everyone has their own way of dealing with things. Probably should collaborate and write a book.]

All work and no play is dangerous, you know.

Oh hell no. There's gonna be more problems, if anything. This place is a fucking shitshow under a probably pop-able bubble made of evil spirits. But we can keep each other sane dealing with it.

That's what I thought.

Playing when you should be working is more dangerous, and I think we've all outgrown the need for play.

Would you go if we had a legit therapy guy or would you just have everyone else go?

If I had the time, yes. It wouldn't be fair to have people do as I say, and not as I do.

*Faye just breathes out a small, amused huff and gently rolls her eyes. She scans Grell over again and slowly shakes her head and she crosses her arms*

That means, I didn't figure you'd be the kinda woman getting your neck sucked on. Sure, what you do in your own time is up to you, I just thought you'd be a little classier than that.

*Faye grins a little, knowing very well that she is just making sport of winding Grell up. She steps a little closer so that she can make a dramatic show out of peering at Grell's neck*

[Grell leans back from Faye's scrutiny.]

I would wear it proudly, thank you! Class is owning up to your actions.

*Faye just laughed shortly at that and waves a hand before resting it firmly on her hip*

I'm sure that must be true...somewhere in the universe. Really, I'm sure people don't nees to know.
