Most of Kay's fears involve the Empire as well and it always takes him far too many seconds to process which one of them is to blame for the way their surroundings look. Cassian's fears involve more stormtroopers and flags, Kay's are filled with scattered bodies of rebels soldiers and another version of himself, eyes red and looking for Cassian.

Kay lost count of how many times he has seen himself, the other KX droid, kill his lover by snapping his neck, gunning him down, stabbing him, throwing against walls like a ragdoll...the last encounter with his fear involved Cassian being killed in a particularly gruesome way, getting his chest stepped on by the other KX droid until his ribs cracked, puncturing his lungs. Blood gushed from Cassian's surprised open mouth, and he threw angry accusations at Kay, the real one, about how it was all his fault. Kay had tried to stop the other droid, had teared off his head in anger and watched as Cassian's body turned to ash and disappeared. It was all for nothing, if he stayed outside, it would happen again all over.

Sickened, he headed home, trying to move as quickly as he could. He had left Cassian alone for far too long as he went to get food, who knew what could be happening to him.
