[Yang's leaning her metal arm on the handle of a grocery cart, using it as a sort of slow scooter as she wheels her way down the frozen food aisle at the grocery store.]

[She stops to peer into one of the cases, squints, but rolls on.]

[She sighs, but smiles.]

Heya! So. Real quick. Mom's here. I'm okay, we talked, things are...weird, not gonna lie, but I'll figure it out. I'm having a girls' night with my roomies, figured that would perk me right up. There's nothing some junk food and girl time can't fix!

[She blows out a breath. She's tired, a little frazzled, but her crooked smile is at least genuine.]

When he gets back from his trip to the Dream Docks, I'd love a good spar if you can work it into your busy schedule.

[Her lopsided smile grows into a mischievous grin. Looks like she's feeling better if she's up to teasing him.]

Remember Yin from that dating sim game? She looks exactly like her, just older. Her name is Raven Branwen, she's the masked lady who showed up on the video feed last night. Leads a tribe of bandits. There's still a lot about her I don't know, but...it's weird. It feels like I finally have a chance to find out.

You want me to introduce you, or should I put a pin in that for later?

Oh, that's... not going to be necessary. I already told her not to cause a ruckus.

Yeah. I thought you knew. Qrow's my uncle, and they're twins. I didn't know you'd already heard of her, though.

Anyone who grew up in Mistral knows who Raven Branwen is. I just didn't know your uncle Qrow was that Qrow.

[And there's warmth in her voice. He's a good guy, someone who picked her up when she was in pieces. And he's been watching over Ruby too, so. Good uncle.]

So...guess you should have been the one I shook down for information on my mom, then, heh! What do you know about her? I'm still filling in a lot of gaps.

[ The man might be one of a kind, but his stench is familiar. Mercury doesn’t exactly want to bring that up though, nor does he want to go into the fact that he technically already met Qrow once upon a time even if the old drunk doesn’t know it. So the subject of Qrow Branwen? Dropped.

As for her mom, Mercury doesn’t answer right away, brow furrowing just a bit. ]

You seriously don’t know anything about her? I’m not sure I have much to say that you’ll want to hear.

[Yang fidgets slightly, glancing to the side.]

...When I first came here, I gave all the memories and information I had about her to open a gateway to Vale. We needed Dust, and Ruby was saying she'd be the one to do it since she was the leader. Couldn't let her do that, and it wasn't like my mom had done me very many favors. The choice seemed pretty obvious.

[Her gaze shifts back to the screen.]

I'd like to know. Please.

She’s ruthless.

[ The answer is point-blank – if Yang wanted the truth, she’d get no deception from him. He wasn’t the type to go easy on anyone. Hell, he’d promised not to coddle her some time ago and he meant it. ]

Raven’s tribe is notorious for waiting for the worst possible times to show up – usually when a village’s strongest fighters are out hunting and the settlement is defenseless. They swoop in, take what they need, kill whoever is in the way, and let the Grimm pick at the remains. She’s got a pretty well-known policy of “no survivors”, unless you can prove you’re strong enough to at least be useful to her. If something’s in her way, though, she’ll cut it down no matter what.

[ It might be a policy he respected. There might be a part of him that still does. ]

So, yeah, super glad to have her on the prowl here.

[She's glad he told her. Sure, her brow furrows pretty much right from the start, but if anyone knows what it's like to have a ruthless parent, it's Mercury. Yang's just fortunate that Raven isn't the type to turn that ruthlessness on her own daughter. At least, as far as she knows.]

I'll talk to her about it. There's nothing I can do about what she did back home, but here, that kind of thing just isn't going to fly. I was kind of planning on asking her to join me on the bounty I signed up for. Sort of a mother-daughter bonding opportunity.

You really want that? I mean, wasn’t she the one who left you guys in the first place? Kind of sounds to me like she made her choice not to be involved in your life already.

[Yang sighs.]

I don't know what I want. Before I got here, I was headed into Mistral to find her. Not because I wanted closure, but because I knew her semblance could take me to Ruby. Last night, we talked, and I finally...finally...got some answers.

[She looks down at her knees, frowning quietly.]

She's my mom. And this place, it changes people. Makes things possible that I never would have imagined could happen back home. If the opportunity is there, to have her as part of my life, then I want to give her a chance. If she shuts me down and walks away, fine. That's how it was before, I can't get that upset about it. But it might be something really good, too.

I don't know. Am I crazy to be cautiously optimistic? I know it could go sour, I do, and I'm prepared for it. I just don't want to burn any bridges if I don't have to.

I think you’re setting yourself up for disappointment. I’m not saying people can’t change [ he’d be a fucking hypocrite if he did ] but it’s not like she’s new to her ideals or looking for some new direction. She’s been that way for a long time, it’s rooted. Look at Jacques-ass Schnee – he’s the same dickwad he always was, even here in the land of opportunity.

[ He shrugs, turning his head off to one side as he scratches under his chin. ]

You know what they say about old dogs and new tricks. Just keep your expectations in check, is all I’m saying. For all you know, her walking out of your life might have been the best thing for you.

Yeah. I know.

[And she's glad he isn't trying to sugarcoat it. It's a big reason why she trusts him as much as she does.]

Thanks. I know talking about family isn't...your favorite thing. So I appreciate it.

[ He shrugs again, looking back at the camera with a twist of a grin. ]

No problem. It’s nice to know family dysfunction isn’t mine and mine alone.

'Nice?' Really?

[His grin pulls a smile to her face in return. Whether it is or not, it's still good to talk about this with someone who definitely gets it.]

So...is that a yes to a spar once your partner comes back from the Dream Docks?

[Yang's eyes widen, and her already pale skin goes even whiter. Shhhh, Mikaela! You know not of what you speak!]

[She's got a pint of pineapple sorbet that's getting tossed into the cart, now that the warning is issued.]

We just have to wait until the chance comes along to give him a tip. Does he deserve it? No. Will it keep our windows from being broken every other week? Maybe. At least the odds will be better.

Here go my grand plans of complicated traps and pranks...
