That's an excuse and you know it. A person is still themselves, no matter what memories they have, going "Oh they weren't themselves, so they should get away with murdering people" is just going to let others use the same excuse. "But sir, I was under crazy mind shenanigans! So it wasn't really me who killed all those people", no wonder Attleton has such a murderer problem.
