Action

[Django remembered his mystic guitar turning to ashes and exploding in the Miracle City Volcano. He expected to wake up in the Land of the Dead as he always did and yet he didn't. He opened his eyes to see a silver cocoon spun around him and his guitar in his hand. He hit the strings and blasted the top of the cocoon open. He jumped out and looked around. He groaned as he realized he jumped into water and got his boots wet. He marched out of the cave and onto the beach and into the raging storm. He frowned as the snow pelted his clothes and bones. Good thing about being dead is you didn't get cold. It didn't take him long for Django to find the magazine stand and hologram message. He listened to the explanation message twice over before he flipped through the pamphlets.

He had been kidnapped? What kind of stupid idiot would kidnap him? No matter. This world was in for a world of hurt. It and any heroes. He smirked as he reached into his poncho and found the cell phone. Time to introduce himself.]

Video

[The video comes on to show a skeleton with glowing crimson eyes and markings over his face. He stands there, holding his hat with one hand and the phone with the other, the storm raging around him. He clears his throat and starts speaking.]

Hello. I uh...guess I was recently kidnapped? Not really what I want to hear when I wake up in a cocoon but what can I do? So...I can stay at an orphanage or work? Are those my only options?

As for your options, well, of course one should work. Unless you don't want to eat; perhaps you don't need to. It's good to anyway. How old are you? You, aheh, may be too old for the orphanage.

Oh right. I'm Django of the Dead.

Depends on how you count age, honestly. I'd rather work. I'm not one for letting someone else take care of me. I'm independent like that.

[Django said with a proud smile.]

And who are you?

Huh! We don't get gypsy names very often.

[His delight is short-lived as he considers the title following that.]

How, er, did you come by the surname?

Ah, I'm Ted.

[He says lightly; his own name isn't worth investigating, he swears.]

[Django looks down at himself, raising his clawed skeletal hands up and looks back at the camera. He blinks those glowing red eyes before he answers.]

Uh...I was unborn with it? It's always been my surname. Like my dad and my Nana before him.

And it isn't a gypsy name.

[Oh no, his deepest fears are being realized! Wait, what did he just say?]

Er..."unborn"? How, um, does that...work?

[Gee those are some scary-looking hands. Sure hope he's not evil!]

Oh. Huh. What sort of name is it, then?

...I don't actually know. My Dad hasn't given me that talk yet.

[He clears his throat.]

It's just our last name. My Grandmother is named Sartana of the Dead and my dad has Of the Dead as his last name and I'm Django of the dead. I guess we got it from the Land of the Dead?

[Probably one of the things he's better off not knowing.]

Oh, no I mean your first is the Romani one. Means, ah, "awake."

[He's really hoping in a sense other than the necromantic.]

A whole Land of that, eh? What was that like?

[He needs to stop asking these questions.]

[Django blinks.]

I didn't realize that. Huh. Good to know, I guess?

[He smiles at the second question.]

It's awesome. Full of dead people. It's where everyone goes when they die. Lots of skeletons with pretty cool stories to tell.

[He's always happy to let people know their own onomastics. Really, it's downright irresponsible to keep them in the dark about it, undead or otherwise.]

Huh. Do any of them pass on, or just sort of...linger?

That mostly depends on if they're remembered or not. Remembered people get to be a-okay in the land of the dead. Forgotten people waste away and sink into the ground.

[Yikes! They don't get a say, it seems. Yet his dumb curiosity propels him onward.]

Huh! Any idea what happens to the sinkers? And does the remembrance only apply to their time alive or just...you know, altogether?

Pretty sure it's all together. They get angry and vengeful. Sometimes they just disappear. My Nana tried to help them once. Unfortunately she was unsuccessful.

Oh dear. I imagine that must tempt the others to, ah, make a name for themselves; you know, to etch their memory into others all the more indelibly. Still, it must get crowded. The dead are sure to outnumber the living in a single generation, I imagine.

Really? That's...altruistic of her. What did she try?

She tried to draw them out of the ground on the Day of the Dead to help them be remembered. And then the Rivera family ruined it all. They didn't want them to be remembered.

[Ted's concern stops, then melts away entirely as he interprets the motives of the characters in those story for himself.]

Ha, ahahaha! Yes, I'm ah, sure that's the reason. Well, Django, it's been novel speaking with one so strange. You let me know if you need any help or tango with any troubles; goodness knows the world has enough of both.

[Django blinks. Did he see through his lies? The story wasn't very convincing anyway, he knew it. But best to keep the truth hidden.]

I will. I'm going to try and stay out of trouble though. It's not my thing.
