What in Agni's name is a vid-ee-oh-pho-nuh supposed to be, anyway?

[ zuko has no idea that the strange looking device he's holding up over his head and squinting at is the item in question. it's not his fault he has no concept of electronic communication, let alone electronics. his world has yet to hit a true industrial age. "advanced technology" in his day and age involves fires, steam, and bending, not... whatever this is supposed to be.

useless — that's what zuko decides it is. just a strange, mangled piece of metal and glass.

he discards it, setting it against the roots of the tree he's propped up against, but it's still recording him as he draws the pamphlet back out of the box. the necklace glistens on his wrist where he's affixed it like some sort of beaded cuff as he unfolds it. ]

[ zuko draws his dao from their sheath at his back, jumping to his feet. he whirls around, pointing the still blades, still joined together as one, up at the tree. ]

Who's there? Show yourself!

[Temari watched him move about from the top of the tree. He seems to be someone with a feisty temper. Dangerous too if he's carrying a blade like that.

Temari steps forward a bit, to where there's light shining within the leaves. A smug look present on her features.]

You've got a fiery temper, don't you?

[ on edge since he woke up in the bay, zuko sighs flames and smirks up at the girl in the trees. ]

You have no idea.

[Was this a ninja from the Hidden Leaf Village? Or was he one of those magical individuals. Temari wasn't sure, but with one swift motion, she took her fan from behind her, pulled it open to reveal one star, and summoned winds towards the other man to extinguish the flame.]

Who are you?

[ all notions of fighting back are dispelled the moment he's hit with that powerful gust of wind. it's only by virtue (if one could call it that) of having fought aang so many times before that zuko manages to stay upright. eyes wide, zuko lowers his sword. ]

You're an airbender.

[ he takes a hesitant step forward. lee ought to be the name he gives her, but she's an airbender. or someone he, at least, perceives to be one. there are no airbenders left. they're all gone. his grandfather, sozin, saw to that. aang's the last one, yet she just—

he really is far away from home, isn't he? ]

My name is Zuko, Crown Prince of the Fire Nation. [ maybe technically not anymore, but he wants to see — recklessly — how she responds to that. ]

[An airbender? Is that what he calls someone who has control over wind using her chakra? She sort of likes the sound of that. But instead of confirming or denying his thoughts, she simply jumps off the tree and then appears swiftly in front of the man. It was too easy to extinguish his flame, so she can only take that as a sign he didn't wish to fight with her. He also withdrew his sword, which is a positive sign. So she drew her fan back behind her and gave him a formal bow - He was a prince after all.]

Prince Zuko.

I'm afraid you are far from the Fire Nation. This is Genessia and that device you just threw on the ground is essential for your stay here.

[Temari was formal as always. She doesn't know where the fire nation is, but he certainly sounded like a ninja from the Leaf Village.]

Please don't bow.

[ he left. he left that behind. people bowed to his father, to his sister — he didn't want people to bow to him. he wasn't commanding respect right now, and he wasn't like ozai and azula, wanting to make those around him feel inferior to his royal blood. ]

Yeah, I kinda figured that. [ far from the fire nation, far from the western air temple. ] It is?

[ zuko sheaths his swords and steps around her to retrieve the discarded device. he turns it over in his hands, still not seeing how this strange-looking thing is supposed to be essential to his survival in these foreign lands. ]

It is only appropriate to afford respect to those deserving of it.

[Temari simply nodded at him with his inquiry. A part of her still worried about the burn on his features. Still, they seemed old, but she could only wonder what monster would do that to a prince. Must be a brave one.]

That device is used in this world to communicate with others through various methods. Aside from that, you'd find it useful in knowing the movements of others. People can also easily warn you about impending dangers or events.

I don't— [ he really doesn't, but it isn't something he's particularly fond of discussing. especially with a stranger. he lets it go.

to him, "various methods," translates to different types of bending, so he does the thing most natural to him: he bends at it. a flash of fire coating his fingers like a glove graze the device, but has no effect. ]

I think mine's broken.

What the...?

[Temari thought she had explained the concept properly. It seemed like she made a mistake somewhere, or he just misunderstood. Immediately, she took her fan and extinguished his flame lightly.]

That's a communication device. It is not something you use to amplify your flame!

I'm not amplifying my bending. I'm trying to make it work!

[ like the pneumetic locks in the palace and the engines deep in the bowels of his ship. ]

You're trying to...

[Zuko should be very thankful that he introduced himself to be a prince earlier. If he hadn't, she wouldn't feel the need to hinder her immense desire to whack Zuko in the head with her iron fan.

Instead she walked closer to him, took her communicator from her leg pocket and showed him the basic functions.]

Lastly, this button allows you to make sure only a few individuals can listen to what you have to say.

[ truth be told, zuko needs a good whacking upside the head. several whackings. his uncle would agree. ]

Things don't work like this where I'm from. Technology is driven by steam or bending. I guess it looked like I was trying to set this thing on fire.

[ words: he's not always good at them. he has a bad habit of acting first and speaking later. he's trying to get better at that. it's a work in progress. ]

[Push enough, Temari will actually do it. She's not exactly the patient type.]

It's totally understandable. When I arrived here as well, I didn't know how to use this communicator until my brother had taught me.

[Yet, Temari understands him more than he knows. Gaara barely speaks his thoughts and when he does, it usually meant someone will die, is dying or is dead.]

It's hard to get settled in here, but I'm sure someone as skilled as you will find a way.

I have some experience with that.

[ like having been at sea for years or that month he spent wandering the earth kingdom in his (foolishly) stubborn determination to do things by himself. zuko's learned that sometimes, you need help. not everything can be done alone.

he's grateful for the assistance temari and the others who've spoken to him so far have provided him. ]

[Temari simply nodded at his appreciation. It was different when someone thanked her, versus her asking people to appreciate and notice her efforts. Perhaps she was simply better at giving herself compliments rather than receiving them. So she said nothing. For a few moments she was just silent and re-adjusting her iron fan when she glanced back at the direction of the Prince.]

Don't tell me you intend to sleep under a tree the whole time you're here.

I will if I need to. Just because I was raised in a palace doesn't mean I don't know how to survive on my own.

[ nevermind the fact that learning how to do so was both not his choice and his own stubborn fault, all at the same time. having a bounty on his head put him and his uncle on the run. his refusal to accept help had him sleeping in the dirt with his ostritch-horse. they might not have been the best of scenarios, but they taught him how to fend for himself when he was left with virtually nothing and very little resources. ]

That does not mean you'll be safe under a tree on your own either.

[Temari takes a deep breath and just sighs at that. She slowly made her way closer to Zuko and gave him a welcoming smile.]

We used to have a roommate who vacated her room and is currently living with her, boyfriend, I believe. So if you promise to avoid burning anything in the apartment, and promise to contribute once your able to find a job, I can give you a key to my apartment.

You'd do that? Are you sure?

[ avoiding burning down things had been part of his agreement when he moved into the western air temple with "team avatar," too. funny, how he actually misses them. ]

I won't burn anything! I can control my firebending, I promise.

[ as much as there's a part of him that still longs to stand on his own two feet, he'd rather not sleep under a tree if he doesn't have to. and he's getting a lot better at accepting help from people (and offering help in return). ]

[Everyone in her apartment were ninjas. So she didn't think it would be a problem at all if they lived with someone who can produce flame-jutsu.]

Absolutely sure.

[Then for a while, when she heard the word 'control', Temari had to pause and look at the sky. She was silent as she adjusted one of her bonbons. She thought about her brother's unpredictable temper.]

I'll introduce you to my brother when he gets home, and to Sai. They are my housemates.

[She then looked back at Zuko with a smile as she laughed nervously.]

My baby brother is a nice person I swear. He really is! He's well... Please just be careful with dealing with him.

[ a bunch of ninjas and a firebender who used to masquerade as the blue spirit, all under the same roof. fitting. ]

Careful not to set him off? [ sounds like an edgy person. not that he could judge that. he used to be a pretty edgy person himself. he'd snap at the hand that tried to feed him, be nice to him, help him, etc. without a second's thought, not too long ago. ]

[Temari's smile faded. She looked at Zuko and simply nodded at his question.]

For the most part, he's calm. Mostly quiet too. But, he's not too used to affection or regular social interactions. So I'd be careful is all.

But if you find yourself in a predicament with him, I'd suggest calling him rather than fighting him.

[She tried to remember the term Zuko used in describing his skills and hers.]

He's a deadly sandbender, most especially when he's not in control of his own emotions. I think he's calmer now, but I just want to make sure this city will remain standing and the people stay alive.

[sandbenders. it's good of her to use that term, because zuko understands. he might not have been in the desert for very long, but tales of the sandbenders kept him from venturing out to the farther dunes, not wanting to be robbed, captured, or fall victim to one of their sandstorms. ]

[Of course Temari assumed he can't jump on trees. He had a good physique and it seemed like he trained as much as hers based on his muscles. But she did not want to impose.]

I can show you to the apartment right now. But would you rather I show you where you can get clothes and where you can eat outside the apartment?

[ he could do that. zuko was agile when needed be. he was a far more graceful than his awkward, sometimes clumsy movements made him out to be. that worked to his advantage — sometimes. people didn't expect him to be so quick and nimble. ]

What's wrong with my clothes? [ zuko looks down at his attire. he's still wearing fire nation clothes, shades of red and gold trim. high quality cloth in spite of him having not left the palace wearing his armor or something more befitting of a prince. (probably because he didn't want to look like the prince of the fire nation when he approached the avatar.)

food, though... food is good. also: ] Are there any tea shops in this place?
