What in Agni's name is a vid-ee-oh-pho-nuh supposed to be, anyway?

[ zuko has no idea that the strange looking device he's holding up over his head and squinting at is the item in question. it's not his fault he has no concept of electronic communication, let alone electronics. his world has yet to hit a true industrial age. "advanced technology" in his day and age involves fires, steam, and bending, not... whatever this is supposed to be.

useless — that's what zuko decides it is. just a strange, mangled piece of metal and glass.

he discards it, setting it against the roots of the tree he's propped up against, but it's still recording him as he draws the pamphlet back out of the box. the necklace glistens on his wrist where he's affixed it like some sort of beaded cuff as he unfolds it. ]

You know, I don't question it because I don't know. I'm not all tech-savy or whatever people call people who know it all. I just know it's very useful to be able to talk to people from long distances.

[ he blinks, the worlds feeling odd and heavy on his tongue. that's not something people call anyone where he's from. or if they do, it's something done outside of the fire nation, and not in any of the circles he's been in. maybe those engineers from the earth kingdom that were captured during the failed invasion on the eclipse? they're probably all at the boiling rock, now... ]

I take that to mean you're quite a ways away from me right now. [ but just to be sure, zuko looks around him and — nothing. she's nowhere. he'd see something, hear something. he's good at paying attention to his surroundings. (most of the time.) ]

[She nods, she couldn't exactly explain what she meant by her words though, but she knew what a phone was at least.]

Yeah, they could explain this better than I. I just think of it as a more advanced phone.

Probably, although we are more likely in the same city. There are five overall, but I haven't really gone to the other four yet.

[ zuko frowns. ] I don't know what a phone is, either.

[ he will, eventually, but his world needs a few more decades to catch up. people will get there, eventually, but the focus right now is on the war, not up and coming technological developments. ]

I read something about that in the pamphlet. Which city are you in?

You....Dont know what a phone is? really? how do you even communicate with others long distance?

[Writing letters? That's probably it, isn't it. The old school style of getting messages across.]

I'm currently in Genessia City, which should be the place you arrived in.

[ wait, wait, wait. he didn't introduce himself, did he? he should probably rectify that. ]

I'm Prince Zuko, by the way. [ the "prince" part is force of habit. ] Not that you have to call me prince since I sort of left... Just Zuko is fine. I would prefer just Zuko.

Bending....signals? [She feels like an idiot for not actually understanding what he meant by that. At least she understood the hawks thing. Kind of. She pauses though afterwards as he mentioned his name. Prince Zuko. So a prince had been brought here. She would have never guessed that one.]

Okay, Zuko, if that is what you want me to call you. I'll call you exactly that. I'm Minako Aino, but Minako is fine.

Yeah, like— [ he holds the device out and bends with his other hand, moving his hand in a high arc with a flame trailing off his fingers, then chambering back and sending the burst of fire up into the air. ] —that. Bending signals. Different bursts of fire mean different things if you do it right and know how to recognize them.

[ it was something zuko probably wouldn't have learned had he not spent all that time at sea aboard his uncle's ship. ]

I do, Minako. In a place like this, I don't need any titles.

[ give it time. something will give him reason enough to proclaim he's royal to the masses. humble is still a work in progress, no matter how much headway he's made so far. ]

[Minako couldn't help but look a little impressed at that. It was like what Raye could do with fire, except different somehow at the same time.]

Oh wow, that's actually pretty neat and that is something you can do?

[She nods slightly, that was true at least since there didn't seem to be anything like royalty around here.]

At least here you can be who you might want to be, at least.

Yeah, I can send them and read them, but that's probably not going to do me a lot of good here...

[ here, where he's just another seventeen-year-old boy from another world. ]

I could. Is that what you're doing, being who you want to be?

Probably not. I mean you could try but I don't think it would know where to go here.

[She nods, well she is trying to at least, but her mind does try and think of what she is suppose to be doing compared to what she could be doing.]

I am, of course. It's quite interesting to do really. I'm sure you might learn a thing or two about yourself when you try.

[ zuko's a work in progress. a few months ago, he was the disgraced, banished son of fire lord ozai. now he's the traitor prince who ran away to help the avatar put his father in the ground. he's seen the error of his ways, realized the mistake the war has been and the fear it's instilled in the world. he's learned that his mother might be alive and that avatar roku is his great-grandfather. he's still trying to figure out who he is now that he's zuko, the avatar's firebending teacher and not zuko, crown prince of the fire nation. ]

[She knew people do have things to learn about themselves, but she didn't think they would need an awful lot. So it was a first.]
