So. Many. NPCs.

They weren't even People of the Land, but the HUD was telling her there was a ton of NPCs here. And there was also a lot of Adventurers, and she peered at each and every screen for a moment before grinning. "Well, nothing to do but to find out if my guild is here!"

Scrolling through her friend list however made Tetra scowl. He grumbled a little, poking at it. "C'mon, it says they're all online but I can't Voice Chat with them!"

Poking her friend list over and over, he grumbled a little. "This sucks. Aw well, time to find work I think! I think an Idol should do!"

Humming as she skipped along, Tetra let magic flow as music accompaniment followed him everywhere.

Tetra was Tetra after all.

[She struck a pose with a giggle.] And if you get beat up, your favorite idol will be able to cast magic! Honest to goodness real life magic! I'm a two-in-one idol cleric!

I don't believe in God, though I visit the Shinto shrines every New Years. You can call me a progressive healer though!

Nope, nothing cows this galaxy-idol! Not even competition! After all, everyone enjoys Tetra-chan's singing! Fourth? Nope, none of that numerology.

[He's just bursting with questions peppered with tremulous laughter; his usual reaction to nonsense.]

A galaxy-idol? That's novel. What's that distinction?

Oh, well, that's a relief, at least. But then, why are you named "Tetra"?

[Maybe he should exhibit a manner or two.]

Towards being the best idol, duh!

Galaxy-idols are world class healers, who can sway the hearts of thousands of people. Tons of people enjoy my singing and dancing!

Dunno, thought it was cool. If you want to get picky, it's Tetora. But I go by Tetra.

[Geez what's with the interrogation?]

Yeah about that. What's your level anyhow? You should be talking more to a senpai.

[He excuses himself while he goes to look that up with the joy that accompanies enlightenment. Ted loves his names. Some kanji translation later and he finds it means..."tetra".

Hang it all. He returns with a frustrated smile.]

[He contemplates, being one unaccustomed to videogames, especially the weirdos who'd apply them to RL.]

[She blinked for a moment before laughing.] Not your HEIGHT silly goose, I mean your level! What level are you? Fifty? Fifty five? Sixty? You're certainly not 90, you don't even wear any equipment that could boost your stats.

[She's making fun of you Ted.]

Heh, so you did.

[He obligingly chuckles along, aware that he's the butt of a joke he's hopelessly outside.]

How ah, would one tell such a measure? I'm afraid I've no earthly idea of your meaning.

... Hold on.

[And she pops out of his clothing, poking at his status screen.]

Oh you're level 44. Okay.

[And she slides back into his shirt, disappearing from view, before returning to video.]

[He rears back, eyes wide as his personal space suffers a breach. Was...was that a thing healers could do?]

How did you...but what does that...what!?

[He really should be used to strange things by now.]

[Only this healer. At least she wasn't Maryelle. Maryelle would have tackle-hugged him so hard he would have smashed into a wall creating a splintered effect.]

Heeee. It's a secret~!

[And Tetra winked, making a V for Victory with her fingers.]

[He splutters, motor-mouth gaining speed as he desperately looks for answers to strange questions.]

But, I mean-is that good? What does a "level" represent? And if you reckoned yourself as my kohai, would that mean yours was lower? Is it a static or dynamic number?

[If she thought the interrogation was bad before. At least he knows a little Japanese.]

Naw you're way lower than I am, level wise! You need to work on that level though, maybe get some combat training in, or something.

[She posed, his expression wide with a grin.] I'm level 93! That means I'm way stronger than you magic-wise!

[Maybe not here, but she had her level and that's what counted.]

[Well that explains a few things. So it goes up the better one is at violence, meaning this idol has seen...good God, perhaps twice the amount he has. And he's seen a bit!]

Oh, well, I've just signed on with an excellent martial arts teacher, so perhaps that will-

[Focus, Ted. He supposes being a healer would imply, logically, that she's had to things to heal. Awful lot of healer girls, really. Goodness knows what kind of morbid hellscape needed them.]

So you've, ah, seen your fair share of action, I suppose?

[She's a raid healer yo. She's wiped several times too doing it. But Tetra laughs a little.]

Better find some monsters to grind then, it might help.

Yeah, I just finished a raid against The Shinjuku Station. Fought a really nasty piece of work that put the entire town to sleep. That was a full raid of 24 people too, and our levels were all over the place.

Good thing the galaxy idol Tetra was there to heal everyone!

[She struck a pose.]

Aheh, suppose that makes sense.

[Get it, cause "Shinjuku" means "rest town." Putting people to sleep?

Look he needed the laugh cause this was getting stranger by the second.]

Goodness knows how a Station could quicken to monstrous life. Er, speaking of, what does it mean to "grind" a monster?

[Buckle in Ted, it's getting weirder.]

Well it wasn't the station but the guy inside it. We also had to fight a bunch of monsters to get to the final boss too.

Grinding! You know, slaying monsters for like an hour before taking a break.

[Certainly more morbid.]

Slaying!

[Raised on knightly romances where giants were slain with a single backstroke would have made a younger Ted commend such heroics. But now he's met one of the Undertale cast and all that entailed.]

I ah, I see. Vaguely. Were there, ah, noble monsters in your world of origin?

Noble monsters? Naw, not really. I mean, there's a bunch of boss monsters and raid bosses, but nothing really noble. And there's a bunch of weirdos going around trying to steal our memories.

[She shrugged.] I mean, there's normal stuff, hill trolls, goblins, sahagin, tons of stuff to fight. I'm only good at healing, but I've been in tons of raids before and I keep everyone alive and res those who fall in battle.

Ah. That's a...relief.

[A weight is off his head, anyway. For a minute he had thought a teenage girl had drawn more blood than he had. Solemn thought. She'd still been audience to the same, however.

He'll count his blessings.]

Listen, this world isn't quite so, you know.

[He swallowed.]

Bloodthirsty. It's really more about living and the preservation thereof, not the other thing. What villains we have sound quite a bit more subtle than what you've dealt with thus far. Happily your talents sound equally applicable either way, just...

[He'd be more articulate but for his anxiety]

There are some very lovely monsters here, is what I mean. It's a species name, not a mark of enmity eleven times out of twelve. It, ah, really wouldn't do to, aheh, grind any.

Well I noticed there's a ton of NPCs here but a lot of Adventurers. It's definitely not the same as my world but considering everything, I'm loathe to agree that it's not the same.

I mean, I can see your stats and stuff.

NPC? What's that acronym?

Oh, that's very true. The world's interested in those of us who've embarked upon quests and things. It certainly yearns for heroics, though more of the moral and poetical than visceral.

Aheh, would that I could. That sounds very...eye-opening.

[He'll get over what in the world that means one day.]

Well, just tell me you won't go looking for that sort of trouble, all right? Sometimes the world's aggressors are simply cursed or compelled into they know not what. Slaying that kind would be an irreparable loss.

Non-Player Character. It's a term for a video game character that could only stay on track once. The NPCs here are more People of the Land kind, all with their own ideas and goals.

Yeah, and doesn't that sound like a plot hook, or some kind of story huh?

[Heh, well, this is Tetra, usually not very thinking.]

Hey I know what's up. Not much of a PKer anyhow, and I have a pretty good idea that people just want to live and do whatever. Although any dumb stuff happening and I'll be right there to cure it.

Oh, so that's your, er, background...

[Okay so he's talking to an insane person. If the clothes-appearing act didn't clue him in. Either that or they're living in a game which is disturbing all its own. Still, he doesn't think she's dishonest. Tetra appears to have some insight into things, like the unreal nature of the sprites. It's that which makes him want to keep riding this crazy train.]

Aheh, so long as one understands that civilization's the rule, not the exception, all's well. Should you be fortunate enough to encounter one of the good monsters, please, don't mention any grinding of any kind.

"People of the Land"? So there are degrees of, ah, consciousness? Please, elaborate.

A good monster would talk things out! It's not like it's a big deal to avoid combat, I kinda suck at killing things anyhow.

[She hit her head, and stuck out her tongue while winking.]

People of the Land are the inhabitants of the world, and the Adventurers are the heroes who help them! Adventurers are stronger, faster, ten times more durable, and can go on adventures.

[Sounds about right. Sometimes the sprites go on adventures of their own, but they usually end poorly.]

Ah, but that's a subset of the "NPC" category, correct? What about the ones that aren't People of the Land? Are their roles more limited?

The People of the Land look just like us, with their own hopes and dreams. There's the monsters as well, who are constantly respawning enemies in a area. And then there's the overpowered knights but they've vanished as well.

[Tetra shrugged.] There's a lot more things to do.

[That last part seemed disconnected from the rest; Ted thought she meant she had urgent, probably idol-related business to attend to. Which is just as well because this is a lot to take in one go.]

Ah, very like. Seems like your own world prepared you for this one with some pretty proportionate parallels. Well, I'm relieved undoing violence is your forte.

Thank you for illuminating my level, however difficult it might be to raise. Let me know if I can return the favor somehow, all right?

I wouldn't be much of a galaxy-idol if I wasn't a great healer too! I'm sure you can do it, raising your level. I mean, there's also other subclasses to level too.
