[The video starts with a close up on a green and very mechanical eye, with a bit of blue and red in the frame as well.]

...Huh... this certainly is different. Oh, it's recording.

[The video zooms out as X holds the device away from his face and begins to to talk in a rather... militaristic fashion, though it sounds a bit awkward.]

My name is X, serial number DLN-X, also known as Mega Man X, Maverick Hunter S-Rank. All communication to Maverick Hunter HQ is down, if there are any other Hunters in the area, please respond and provide a sit-rep.

[X sighs and lowers the device.]

I hate doing stuff like that... Oh! It's still recording, crap, forgot about that...

[X, for his part, will simply blink back at the response. This... was not a Maverick Hunter so... what was it? For that matter, it didn't even look like a Reploid, though there were always new models rolling off the assembly lines...]

Um... no? I don't have my armor on, if that's what you mean... but... no, I've always been this height. Can't really say much for the seriousness...

[You can almost see the lightbulb over her head as she figures it out.]

[Well, whatever is going on, it's starting to look like maybe that pamphlet wasn't just making stuff up after all...]

No, I'm a Reploid. I'm physically incapable of growth the way humans understand it. My body is completely mechanical so.. the only way I can change size is by replacing parts.

L-look, I... really probably should concentrate on getting back to Maverick Hunter HQ. I'm sure that after Zero got back they'd be wondering where I am.

Who's "Zero", Blue Guy? Is he your friend?

And what's a Ma...ver...ick... Hunter? Is that like being a vigilante?

Best friend, actually. We're the top ranked hunters, and usually act as a two-man team.

In my world, there are robots that for one reason or another, be it simple malfunction, infection by the Maverick Virus or something else, will attack humans. These are then labeled Mavericks, and the Maverick Hunters are called in to dismantle them before they hurt any civilians.

Well, you're certainly a serious sounding fellow.

[Merlin takes an appraising glance of X.]

And judging by the armor, I'd say very far into the future as well!

[X takes a moment to muse at how much Merlin looks like a combination of Dr. Light and Dr. Cain before looking a bit confused at the remark about the future.]

Being a Maverick Hunter comes with certain protocols to follow, sir.

I'm actually a fairly old model, sir. I was constructed a hundred years ago. I've been retrofitted to bring my systems up to spec.

Ah, old for you, perhaps.

[Merlin has a bit of a laugh over the matter.]

For some people a future that far away hasn't even happened yet! And cease with that sir nonsense, boy. Just Merlin will do, I'm no soldier, and you need not address me as such.

Ah, alright, Merlin.

[He looks confused though at the talk of futures and whatnot.]

I'm... not sure what you mean. ..It is the year 21XX, right?

I couldn't tell you what year it is here, as I've only just arrived a few days ago myself, but I happen to be from the 6th century. Being a wizard affords you a certain degree of omniscience.

X, was it? Interesting name.

6th century? [How is that even possible. This guy couldn't really believe he's THE Merlin from Arthurian legend, could he? Unless... that pamphlet was more accurate than he gave it credit for.. Still, he's going to latch on to the second part.]

My father gave it to me. When he built me, he was, unfortunately nearing the end of his life. But, he woke me up long enough to explain my name. In algebra, X is a variable. It can mean anything. I was the first robot to ever truly have free will, emotions, and desires. He wanted me to know that I could be whatever I wanted, and so, named me X. He said it meant unlimited potential.

I'm... not so sure about that, but... it's a nice sentiment to be sure.

Indeed boy, I hope just because you're made of metal doesn't mean your hearing is impaired!

[The math reference does make Merlin smile.]

Such is the way for most people. With the right care, you mechanical folks can probably live forever! Your creator must have seen fit to give you a good bit of smarts. That's good, it will serve you well!

[Merlin's grin only grows wider on hearing the rest of the story.]

Goodness me, then your presence must be quite significant. I know there will come a time when people start experimenting with robots late into the 20th century, but I could have never foreseen someone like you being created.

[X grins, no shortage of pride on his face. He never got to meet his father outside that one conversation, or any of his siblings, but after he got his hands on a history book and read up on Dr. Light, Rock, Roll, and Blues, he couldn't be prouder to be a part of that family.]

Heh, a lot of people couldn't have foreseen it. My father - Dr. Thomas Light - was gifted beyond any human ever in the field of robotics. He made my siblings to be as close to human as possible, capable of acting autonomously, yet wasn't able to give them the soul he wanted so desperately to give them until he made me. Of course, being the first of my kind, he had to make sure my programming was sound and bug free or else I'd just default back to a very elaborate algorithm.

He sealed me away for some time to run diagnostics on my systems to make sure I was functioning properly and was truly an individual intelligence. Unfortunately, he didn't live to see the program completed, and I sat dormant for a hundred years. When I was found, the people who woke me up said I was unlike anything they had even seen. Dr. Light really was... special.

And here you are, walking around and talking. Sounds as though your programming seems to be working just fine!

[If only he knew how much crap X had gotten into.]

This is absolutely fascinating, I've never had the chance to see a mechanical man like yourself so articulate! Archimedes and Wart certainly wouldn't believe their eyes if they could meet you!

[He just chuckles a bit.]

Yup. First of my kind, but definitely not the last. I wouldn't mind meeting them myself, really.

[Merlin could not be more interested in you, X. Seriously.]

Tell me, X. Does your occupation leave you much time for reading?

[He thinks for a second.]

It does... but it's not quite the same as what you're familiar with. The vast majority of books have been transcribed into a digital format, and I can download them into my memory banks whenever I want, really. Once there, it's like... I read everything at once, if that makes any sense.

I don't think you'll be able to reach your Headquarters here. I don't know all that much about what's going on, but I'll answer whatever questions you have.

[Ryu takes a moment to examine X's armor. That's definitely unlike anything he's seen before, in human or robot.]

I was kind of afraid of that. Guess I'll just have to hope that Zero can keep everyone calm until I figure out how to get back. Thanks for the offer, if I think of anything, I'll be sure to let you know.

I take it that's the name of a friend of yours? I'm sure things will be okay until we can find our way back.

Yeah, Zero's my best friend and partner. He's held down the fort while I've been occupied before. I don't doubt he can keep everyone calm until I get back.
