[A disgusting bug lady with a big smile is on the screen. She's sitting politely, albeit a little stiffly, on one of the sidewalk benches near the Bay. As she speaks, her face is excessively expressive, especially the way her brows lift or furrow over her huge dark eyes.]

Hello. I am Mantis. I am very grateful for the many gifts of jewelry and units that were left for me.

[Her head dips as she puts her hand briefly on the opal necklace around her throat. She's practically beaming. No one has ever given her such a nice present!]

I am also grateful for the information. I will do my best to memorize it, and I hope I will make many friends.

[She smiles HARD, probably being a little too toothy with her smile, but she does seem genuinely happy and even gives an awkward little wave with her hand. Hello, future friends! ...And then she keeps smiling. And smiling. And waiting. This is the part where someone else responds, correct?]

...I have never had a job before. I am looking forward to receiving my first job very much!

[It's debatable whether she even knows what a job is, if she looks that enthusiastic about it.]

[Her brows furrow up to an incline as she turns the question in her head. It is a very good question. She's also completely unphased by his appearance. She's seen much weirder.]

I am an empath. My abilities are often used to help those with troubled minds find peace, or guide those who are unable to rest to sleep.

Then your arrival is fortunate.

I am Grievous, one of the deputy Guardians of Nova City. I also run a Centre for those who have experienced trauma and need counselling or help with troubled minds. Perhaps you would be interested in a position.

Oh... I am very sorry for your loss.

[Her head tilts in sincere sympathy, her antennae lifting as if she might be able to ease his pain through the screen. She knows she cannot do this, of course. She gives one slow emphatic nod in response to his question. She, too, is a guardian, but she senses that the terms hold very different definitions.]

That would be wonderful. I am certainly happy to accept if you are offering this position!

[There's a video response to Mantis' transmission.

It's a boy and at first he's just... staring at the camera behind his thick glasses, mouth a little agape. It almost feels like he isn't going to say anything, with how silent he is and for how long.

Suddenly, he speaks up, a little louder than necessary.]

You are so cool!!

I am cool?

[Her voice lifts with an edge of hopeful optimism.]

Ohhhh... No one has called me this before.

[Peter has referred to things as 'cool' before, and she knows the label has nothing to do with temperature most of the time.]

Then, I think you are SO COOL too!

Then we should meet and speak further. If you are by the bay in Genessia City I can come to you shortly.

Yes, I am very close to the Bay.

[She turns her head as if to make sure she's stated the truth. The Bay isn't more than a block or two behind her, and she's pleased to see she hasn't spoken falsely. She rises to her feet.]

Would you like me to return there, so you will have no difficulty in finding me?

Yes. Remain in that area and await my arrival.

[And true to his word, he will shortly be there. An over seven foot tall cyborg taking long strides and looking imposing - but of course she's seen much worse.]

[Tentacles, titans, and Benedict Cumberbatches! Grievous has been nice to her, so she feels she has nothing to fear. She just has to tip her head back a little further than usual to speak to him.]

Hello, guardian. It is very nice to meet you.

[At this point her radio has been tucked away into her box, which she holds in front of her.]

Do you wish for a demonstration of my abilities?

Deputy Guardian.

[He mildly corrects. He's still a little stung he didn't win Guardian in the last election but he's still happy to do his duty as deputy.]

But you may simply call me Grievous.

Mantis, is it? Yes, you may demonstrate what you can do.

[He will cautiously allow it if she wants to touch him and she may feel much deeply-held grief within him; loss and sadness. For his people and their shattered world; for his lost friends and family and soulmate. There is also determination over that, to protect this new world he now calls his home.]

[She ducks her head a little guiltily at the correction, as if it were a reprimand. She also didn't know that was his name. Mantis would apologize, but he would like a demonstration. Shifting the box to her hip, she reaches out with her right hand, laying a warm palm against his arm and closing her eyes. The tips of her antennae glow softly, and the rush of foreign emotions fills her mind.]

[Her breath catches a little in her throat. She understands now that his name is more like a title for the anguish he carries.]

You are indeed grieving.

[There's a powerful ache in her voice as she lowers her head, and her eyes well up empathetically. It's similar to what Drax the Destroyer felt, and at the same time they are different. Emotions are so unique and so personal.]

And I feel your determination. Your desire to guard what you love.

[The gentle light fades from her antennae, and she meekly retracts her hand. He does not desire pity from her, or else she would give it. Instead she stands quietly before him, head slightly bowed.]

Is this why you wish for a center of mental healing? So that others do not experience the pain you carry inside of you?

[With his lack of facial features, his wince at her words cannot be seen but his golden eye do close briefly and she can probably feel that emotional pain. He had taken great strides here but the wounds were still deep. They'd never fully go away, he knew. But he could feel her sincerity in return.]

Yes. The lack of such a centre was brought forward to me and so I filled this void. However, we are still in need of qualified staff. If you can soothe as well as feel these pains then you will be an asset. Whether through words or otherwise.

We do no ask people to pay for the service, unless they are willing to donate what they can so the pay is not very high. But if you wish to be of help then you are welcome to bring your skills to the Sheelal Centre.

I can.

[And since he asked for a demonstration, Mantis doesn't ask before she's reaching out for him once again. If he doesn't jerk away from her or swat away her hand, then she'll channel serenity and peace into his consciousness, easing the feelings of guilt and remorse into a dormant state. It won't last, for she can't take away his memories. But for now, she can soothe his pain.]

[Carefully she removes her fingertips, the glow once again fading from her feelers.]

I will help you, Grievous. I should like to aid the people of this world if I am able.

[He hadn't asked but the gentle tide of peace - however temporary - is welcome. It's an unusual feeling for him though, after decades of bitter aggression, so for a moment he's speechless as he gets used to the sensation. He nods.]

Good. Then you are hired.

[He gives her further details of the location in Nova City and she will have a room set aside for her to see people who need her help.]

I take it you have very recently arrived. Is there anything now that I can assist you with?

[As a deputy he's often found around this area, seeing to newcomers - although most often that meant warning them not to cause any trouble.]

I asked many questions at the building that Weiss Schnee directed me to visit when I first arrived. At the moment, I have nothing further that I wish to ask. I was also offered a job!

May I visit Everglade? I would like to see the many cities available to us.

There is no way to travel beyond the barrier. Many space-faring people have asked. For now we must stay with the boundaries of the cities that are connected here. The gem you arrived with may guide you through the gates but you are free to stay in any city that you please.

Each region has its own particular... themes, as it were.

[That piques her curiosity. She's been space traveling nearly all her life with Ego, then with the Guardians. It feels a little strange to be bound to just one planet, but if the cities are truly so varied, it is almost like visiting many planets!]

I would like to see the theme cities. It would be most fascinating to experience so many different locations.

[A mouthful? Mantis self-consciously presses her fingertips against one cheek, then the other. Thankfully she keeps quiet about her confusion, so she looks more strange than ignorant. Besides, she can't afford to stall too long, because Hikaru is offering many kindnesses, making it easier for Mantis to smile naturally.]

I would like that very much. It is good to go on patrol with another person.

[In other words, she'd like to help if it becomes necessary. Things seem so peaceful, though, what could go wrong? ~~And she's really not that great in a fight unless she can put someone to sleep.~~]
