What is the nature of the thing you must give up to open one? What would one rate its scale of necessary importance?

Must it be non-tangible? An ability or a memory?

Or may it be physical?

I have a preference for what kind of loss it must be. I have no interest in losing anything I find necessary.

Either abstractions or substances will do, so long as they're substantially valued by yourself. As for a scale, it's more a binary than a gradient: if it answers "is it cherished" in the affirmative, it will serve.

There are so many abilities one could claim to have, mundane and common, or essentially useless.
