heat wave
[ To say 'it could be worse' would be a lie. Because in this moment - things could literally couldn't get any worse for Rosemary. Not only is she in a strange new place, but it's also the middle of a sunny afternoon and it's hot. She shields herself with her cloak; blocks the sun with it and hides in what shadows she can find, but that does nothing for the sweltering heat that seeps through even that. She's too scared to ask for help — too many people, too much noise, too confusing — in a city she doesn't know, and it's all about to catch up with her at once if she doesn't do something.
Keen eyes can see her skittering in and out of shadows - a hooded figure wrapped in a cloak that seems to encompass most of her form. If not, she won't be hard to miss later when she starts to pass out from heat stroke somewhere (anywhere) in the middle of town. A tall, wobbly figure stumbling from the shadows and slumping nearby. A low, pathetic whimper leaving her as her chest heaves.
This place sucks. ]
park
[ Whether escorted or simply managing herself to make her way there, Rosemary eventually gets to some kind of water source relatively secluded during the night time hours. This time her hood is down, exposing her wild black hair and what looks like wisps of black smoke that billow around her every so often. She splashes herself with water, sits on the edge and dips her feet in - feet that are bare and look to be hooked with long talon-like nails. Much like the ones one might see now on her fingers, claws that click against the stone around the edge of the fountain.
Any noise startles her. Her head tilting back to see who might be approaching as the swirls of shadow make themselves more obvious, obscuring - but only just - the blackness of her eyes as they hone in on whatever or whoever made the sound. ]
a really dumb network post (voice)
[ A loud clunk, followed by the clear sound of shuffling and banging leads one to believe that someone just dropped their phone and accidentally brought up the network. Which is exactly what happened. There is no follow up however - no apology, and they don't hang up. Instead, there's a low snarl of what might be annoyance, and a softly whispered: ]
No. [ before the phone clatters to the ground again. ]

heat waaaaaaaave
Sunglasses on, sunglasses off. Sunglasses on... Yep whatever the hell that is it's definitely not the sunglasses, so as Rosemary crumples into a heap he hobbles over, a bottled water open in his hand.]
Uhh, you doin' alright there, mate?
no subject
She stares at Junkrat, whining as she shakes her head frantically. ]
No. No, no. Hot. Too hot. [ She tugs her hood down further over her face. ] Sun hurts.
no subject
[he's gonna offer the water, none the less, despite his own confusion.]
no subject
Unfortunate. ] Thank you...
no subject
No problem, mate. [he scratches the back of his head, stretching up to his full height for a minute before hunching back over.]
You never heard of air conditioning? Makes heat like this much easier to weather. 's a shop near here that's got it for sure. I can show ya, if you want.
no subject
A shop... with people in it? [ She looks frantic. Or she would if he could see more than her mouth right now. ]
no subject
[but he's not THAT stupid and can tell the idea isn't exactly keen on her.]
I gotta house, but it's a bit of a walk. You sure you're up for it?
no subject
I think so? [ So long as she stays in the shadows of the building she might be good. She tugs her hood down a little, nods to indicate he should lead the way. ]
no subject
But they get there eventually.]
Oi! Zoe! We got company! [or a pet. It's going to wind up being a pet.]
no subject
She doesn't reach for a weapon quite yet, but they're visible. Though, if Junkrat brought her here, he had to trust her, right? ]
Oi, ya got a new Sheila? [ She teases, lips tugging in to a smirk. ] She got a name?
no subject
She's stuck between a rock and a hard place now though. More strangers could lead to more problems - but damn if this house isn't way cooler than outside. ]
R... [ Does she answer? Uh. ] Rosemary.
no subject
New what? She was out near the park actin' like she was gonna die in this heat, even worse than anybody else. So, I figured.. .
[what was it he figured anyway? Ugh. He sort of flops down on the floor in front of the couch, peg leg bent up under the other one.]
Pretty sure she ain't even been here long.
no subject
[ ...wait, that makes her sound-- Ugh, nevermind. It must be the heat getting to her already. She shakes her head dismissively, clearing her throat while she nods slightly. ]
Roight, anyway. Come on in 'fore ya burn up. Ya want anythin'? We got enough here to last.
no subject
A few hours ago, I think. When the sun was higher. Too bright here.
[ She's used to the dark. The woods. Shadows she can hide in and not... this. All of this. ]
Can I - I just want water. Please.
no subject
[nothing fancy. He stands up again in all his lanky bullshit glory and lumbers over to the sink, filling a glass with water and ice.]
Here ya go, mate. [he holds the glass out while turning to shrug quizzically at Zoe.]
no subject
She takes it with two hands, nodding her thanks as she starts taking small sips of it. ]
I can go when the sun sets...
no subject
She could stay for a while, can't she? Ain't like we're hurtin' too bad on space right now, yeah?
[ She doesn't think it's right to turn away someone who doesn't have much to their name. Now, they don't have a lot to their names, either, but they're doing pretty damn well for themselves right now. ]
no subject
[he's scratching the top of his head.] Oi, ya said you don't like the sun, so we'll haveta figure out something with less windows for ya. 'S the couch okay till we get something built up?
[How does this happen? Junkrat arrived fully intending on living on his own and yet.]

ungodly reason, Ted's in the park too, and it's pretty easy to notice someone in a hood quite that black. He knows the fashion all too well. He can't help but like being outside whenever he can, even when he really, really shouldn't.He's also interested in all novelties, and what could be more novel than a mysterious stranger covered in black? He must know more! He approaches with an outstretched hand.]
Hello tall, dark and strange. Good morning! Not many out of doors these days. What brings you out?
no subject
I don't know where I am. It's too hot, I had to find water.
no subject
[What with the neurotransmitter chemicals floating around. He wonders if it's cool there. Then realizes that she's as novel as she looked, Genessia likely completely alien to her.]
Aheh, that's a common reaction. I'm Ted. Yourself? I also, ah, have a few remedies. Like this...
[He digs around in his bag before producing ice water, chilled in the convenient not-magic of void space. He'll hand the bottle over to her, hoping to overcome her shyness.]
no subject
...Rosemary. [ She finally answer, taking a sip from the bottle. ] Thank you.
no subject
[Not that he can see her all that well, but he's under the impression most enjoy compliments. He'll have a seat too.]
Not, aheh, the best time to arrive, admittedly. Other than the weather, how are you liking the world so far?
no subject
She chooses to ignore it for now. ]
I want to go home.
no subject
.
I, ah, know the feeling. One never knows; some go as suddenly as they come.
[Not that he knows that for a good thing..]
But it's really not so bad here, once you become acclimatized. Interesting fellows one can find here and nowhere else, once one avails themselves of the opportunity. I might even show you around some of the more beautiful places, if you like, once the weather's of a mind to entertain the venture.
Would you like to seek respite elsewhere? The park is, of course, lovely in all weather, but there's bound to be better places to go, now that your hydration's seen to.
no subject
Trust is hard to come by, after all. ]
Where?
no subject
[Ace detective over here. He'll put those sleuthing skills to work in thinking of a place shadier than the park. Her apartment ought to do the trick; it was dingy, but he'd never known the lighting to pose any obstacle.]
Do you have your things? From The Bay, I mean? I could see you to your apartment. With an extra-large parasol to keep things shady.
no subject
[ She squints, the gesture unseen behind the shadow of her hood. The elf glances down to herself, to one of her pockets where the random things she had been given in the bay reside. A nod. ]
My apartment?
no subject
[He can't really pinpoint where the visual FX are coming from, much less how, but...details.]
The Commons, I mean. Everyone gets to stay there at first, for a while. Ought to provide better shelter than...
[He looked towards the sky.]
Nothing whatsoever.
no subject
I am used to nothing. [ For the most part. ] Where are these commons? Are there a lot of people?
no subject
[The walls between rooms aren't very soundproof, but he's never been in one long enough to notice. Hope her neighbors aren't loud.]
So your aloofness is all but assured. Shall we go?
no subject
The main ones being the teeth, claws, and eyes blacker than they should be. She shifts uncomfortably. ]
I suppose.
no subject
Splendid! We can talk along the way.
[Per usual, Ted meant a very one-sided talk as he waxed upon the many features of Genessia City. Notable stores and landmarks, times for church services, and, you know, it's never too early to start thinking about vocation. She needn't worry about being qualified, they'll hire just about anyone nowadays. And how was she for book-clubs? Ted's overbearing speech was only partially conscious; he figured she was the silent type who'd be more comfortable with her own participation to a minimum.
Through the chatter they finally reach the apartments.]
Not too long a walk, eh? They ought to have air conditioning. Oh-hey, landlady!
[He waved down one woman evidently used to being referred to by title]
Do you have air conditioning?
"Yes. But the bathroom is shared. I encourage you to find a better place to stay when you can."
[Ted smiled at Rosemary, as though the landlady's grim demeanor were an inside joke long established.]
Well, I trust you can find your room. Is there aught else you need for help in settling in?
[heat wave]
She parks her bike and slings her cooler and medkit over her shoulder, about a block away, and then quietly approaches. She's not silent, because she doesn't want whoever it is to think she's trying to sneak up on them. Just quiet, like her voice is kind when she finally offers a gentle]
Hello. My name is Martha.
no subject
It's a pathetic attempt, really. The sun does nothing for her, bearing down on her as strongly as it is now. And the heat is a minute but ultimately annoying factor to the elf's displeasure. ]
Hello. [ She says cautiously, retreating as best she can into waning shadows. ] I'm Rosemary. [ A long pause. Is there something else she needs to say here? ]
no subject
I thought with that cloak, you might be overheating. Would you like some water?
no subject
Yes. [ She says finally, reaching a hand out to take the bottle from her. Long, spindly fingers that end in sharp nails curl around the plastic and take it. ] I do not like the sun. [ She says after taking a sip. ]
no subject
If you have somewhere to go, I can take you there quickly on my motorbike. Get you out of the sun sooner.
no subject
What is a motorbike? [ A pause, and Rosemary half shrugs, looking as confused as one can while shadowed as she is. ] I have nowhere to go.
no subject
A motorbike is a two-wheeled vehicle with an engine. [She tips her head slightly, a listening/thinking gesture that she hopes the other woman will recognize. It probably depends on how not human she is.] We have air-cond-- ah, a cooling system at Torchwood, where I work. You could come with me there until nightfall, and then we can find you a place?
no subject
This woman seems... good? Decent, at the very least. Not outright threatening. Rosemary shifts on her heels as she considers her options. ]
Okay. I'll go.
no subject
We can leave whenever you're ready. But there's no rush. I can tell you a little about myself first, if you would be more comfortable.
no subject
She scoots to the side a little, still trying to find what shade she can to shield herself from the sun. A simple nod is all she gives the other woman now - uncertain what to ask, but clearly interested in hearing more about her. ]
no subject
Right, then. I'm a doctor, if I didn't say. More properly a medical student, but before I could finish I was whisked away on adventures to save the Earth and other worlds. The Earth is where I come from, third planet from a star called Sol by some, but it's just the sun to us. Any of that sound familiar to you?
