III. Into the Fire [video]

[It's not often that Athos takes to social media, especially with him being a recluse and all that. Nevertheless, he does and actually turns on the live stream for once. As usual, the musketeer looks utterly uncomfortable on camera. His hair as grown quite a bit since February and Athos actually trimmed that scraggly looking beard some.

He looks thinner than one would expect outside of his leathers but no less strong. It seems he taken to wearing just a plain white shirt today and a pair of very modern looking slacks. Even he's suffering in this bizarre heat wave.]

I won't bother questioning the weather---[He mutters while wiping the sweat off his brow. Maybe summer wasn't the best time for Athos to grow his hair. He feels hotter than usual.]---But when will it become cooler?

I hope relief comes soon.

[He smiles vaguely before quickly getting to his next point.]

Is anyone seeking a sword for hire?

If this year's like last, relief ought to come later in the month, with relieving rain in August.

[Oh great. It's that boy again. Athos is instantly on guard now.]

[His response is absurdly terse since he doesn't want to say anything that would make this brat mouth off again. Athos had enough of him last time.]

I suppose so. I've played the role of mentor before.

[Ted, familiar with the novel, doesn't think it absurdly terse. A perfectly ordinary amount of terseness. The man beat his trusted lackey if he didn't use sign language, for crying out loud, so that Ted's gotten as many as two sentences ought to qualify for a miracle.

Not that that stops him from his own motormouth tendencies.]

I know just who you mean. It'd be much like how Aramis got into it; what with the scandal and the duel. Not that I've any honor to avenge, but you know the gist. What are your rates?

Oh! Or, tit for tat, I could learn you a thing or two in, say, the contemporary firearm? Things have come a long way in over two centuries.

[The look upon Athos' face is cross between despair and just frustration. How does this boy know so much about him and his fellow musketeers? It's downright eerie how Ted knows so much. While some of the boy's statements are quite wrong, others are actually too accurate for comfort.

Of course the brat is oblivious of it all. So trying to call attention to that is somewhat trying for Athos.]

Yes, quite. [He frowns a bit.] My rates depend upon the person. I'm looking to make some coin, not gouge someone's pockets. We can discuss this more in details privately.

[Contemporary firearms? Athos raises his brow a little.]

I'm interested to see the differences.

[Ted will never know that displeasure unless it's spelled out in detail. Still, he does have some manners. He wouldn't bring up the drinking, or Milday, or the fate of his son. But this casual divination had all the innocent fun of a psychic hot-read to him.]

I'll be sure to dress more beggarly when the time comes. Oh, you're sure to enjoy them. We've rifles that can fire as many as fifty rounds in a single mag--haha, well, the terminology will become clear to you in time. We've even pistols that can hold six rounds in a chamber, and all with far greater accuracy than your titular muskets. Once the culture shock ends, you're bound to love them.

[He arches his brow once some adorable little girl appears. That's not the kind of clientele he was expecting to attract.]

Little one, I don't think you would have need of me. [Or rather, he would hope not.] I own a rapier along with several weapons but I think you've misjudged my words.

I'm seeking work.

[Hana giggles to herself, smiling nervously] I always misjudge words nowadays. This is such a new time..
