(A slender, white figure is sitting on the shore of a peaceful river. She is dripping wet, her knees drawn up to her chest. Warily, she glances at her communicator, pushing back her thick mane of white hair absently.)

You mustn't move too much or too fast in this heat. When you feel overwhelmed, find the shade of a tree or cool water.

(Amalthea closes her eyes and stretches out in the grass, resting on her side.)

This forest is like mine. I could rest...

(If her skin wasn't so sensitive to sunlight...bugs... How do humans stand it?)

[Another soft snort. Really. As if turning her back on Li would improve her mood any. It just made her angry and want to challenge the other mare.]

As if you're bratty attitude's any better. First you're showing off, then you're inviting strangers to your forest.

You have zero survival instincts, do you.

(Sorry, Unicorns don't play that game. Her magic would protect her from a physical attack. Verbal ones are harder to avoid.)

[Good thing this Kelpie's had plenty of practice being vicious in various ways, not just physically.]

Oh, I don't know. Appearing wet and just asking for it in the forest comes to mind. Like I said, you've got no survival instincts. Hell, even a filly on her first legs has better sense than you.

(The language is strange and she glances at the other woman, trying to read something behind her expression.)

I am wet. Why do I need survival instincts? Nothing will attack me.

(To emphasize her point, she tries to coax a ladybug onto her finger. The little bug does everything in its power to make sure that doesn't happen.)

[The only thing behind her expression was anger and something pretty inhuman.]

There's always something that will attack.

[Though seeing the smallest bug avoiding the girl did raise her curiosity more.]

Survival instincts are kind of necessary to you know, survive and not end up dead.

(Whereas she is just a haughty little thing, used to her immortality. But there is something sad about her too if one looks close enough. If so many creatures avoid her like the plague, she must be lonely. The Unicorn hadn't known she was lonely, but Lady Amalthea does.)

(Her pale brows rise.)

I can feel this body dying all around me. Having survival instincts will not save me for long.

[Li snorted slightly as she kept studying the girl.]

You must have a damned death wish.

[And that sparks a little more curiosity.]

Then I'm guessing I'm not not the only creature trapped as a damned human.

I would rather die than remain like this. (She feels her resolve failing in that regard, however, and that frightens her even more.) ...you are a...magical creature?

I'd rather survive and find a way out of my prison.

[Unfortunately, she can't say more than that on exactly what is holding her in this shape. Li was incapable of doing so for the sheer fact of the curse she's under preventing her from doing so.]

...Yeah, you could say that.

I do not know if I will ever be free. The one who cast the spell isn't here.

(And magic is often rather specific about how it can be cast and broken.)

The longer I remain like this, the more I am forgetting. Soon I will imagine I was always a woman.

[...Yeah, Li's well aware of that. Painfully aware of it.]

...Sounds like we have a similar problem.

[She snorts softly.]

Kelpie. Irish descent. We're cousins to the Scottish herds.

Kelpie... (This is a new encounter for her and she stares at Li inquisitively.) I am...a Unicorn.

[This is a new encounter for the both of them. Li's never met a unicorn before. Even in her world they're rarest of the rare.]

...A unicorn.

[Pause.]

Let me guess, last of your kind too? If so, then fuck.

The others were driven into the sea by the Red Bull. There, King Haggard keeps them. (Her gaze is distant, seeing the castle and the waves below.)

[She frowned a little.]

Well, Still fuck all kinds of duck. But, at least your kind are still alive and you know where they are even if they are captives.

Mine are dead. They were either killed off by the humans or cursed by mages and as good as dead. I haven't seen another of my kind in over a hundred years.

For now they live. (Immortal beings can't really die. But they can forget they were ever free.)

...I'm sorry. (She means that and the words are spurred on by the ache of loss in her heart.)

I think it must have been that long for me too.

[But, they were still alive. That's what counted in Li's mind.]

...Yeah, I hear that and it does jackshit.

[Soft snort, but, she does relax a little and nod.]

So, looks like we're only slightly different. And here I wanted to keep bitching you out for being an idiot.

Kind of hard to do now that I know we're in similar boats.
