OPEN AUDITIONS

A magnificent chandelier hangs overhead, casting the theatre in warm, golden light as it dominates the space...


Throughout Theatre, casting signs could be seen posted here and there to guide those auditioning to the stage along with their guests, should they have brought one or two- anything beyond that would be politely turned away. Once backstage, they would be greeted by a staff member, pen and clipboard in hand and a table nearby on which to collect resumes and headshots. Musical accompaniment is, of course, provided if needed, and the sheet music for the individual’s chosen pieces can be left with the pianist stationed just off to the left.

There are a few moments to mingle (or warm up, should they not be socially inclined) before the actual auditions are to begin and a rather expensive looking couple takes the stage to greet the pool of collected talent… and shoo those accompanying them to the middle rows of the auditorium.

“Ah, hello! Good afternoon, everyone, and thank you all for your interest. Let’s go ahead and dive right in, shall we?” He rubs his hands together as he waits for the check-in list, flipping through the first two pages, then addressing everyone one more.

“As noted in the original casting call, we will be doing things a little unconventionally this afternoon. For those of you familiar with this particular production, you know there are quite a few duets scattered throughout. With that in mind, once our initial cut has been made after your solo performances, we will be pairing you up for a second exercise, just to feel out the balances and chemistry within our potential cast.”

The woman steps up beside him and gives them all a bright smile as she clasps her hands together before her. “Do remember- keep your head up, truly feel your piece, and… please project. While we do have the technology these days to aid you, we’d love to hear you truly give it your all and this is a musical about an Opera.”

Seems like that might be a bit of an inside joke with the stagehands that have collected along the perimeter of the stage, particularly punctuated by the few staff members that have taken up post at the back of the auditorium and are now giving them all a thumbs ups and waves.

“Break a leg.”

Each character will have received an audition packet either through their agent (for those affiliated with Fama Talent Agency) or through their own pursuit a week or two in advance. Inside the packet there are call times, the requirements for each roll, a rough schedule of rehearsals for the next two months, and sheet music for a pre-selected song the casting director would like to hear, depending on which role the character shows interest in. They will, however, be asked to sing a song of their own choosing first.

While most of the lead roles have been predetermined oocly, feel free to have your character audition anyway! Phantom has a rather large cast, and we’re definitely looking to make this a fun event for everyone in the long run! If you have something specific in mind, hmu up on plurk (@dovefire) or Dove’s journal. Even if you choose not to have your character make the cut, there’s still the gala and opening night to look forward to! Keep in mind that this is a professional production and the characters will be ICly treated as such.

Feel free to ‘interact’ with each character’s performance (reactions are highly encouraged), though do know that any heckling that disturbs the audition will not be tolerated (unless it’s totally cool with the mun..then go wild.)

She looks up at him again, then takes a sip of her tea. "I wonder if the library here has them... Though if I'm truly honest with you, I really prefer the Iliad and Odyssey, but they're more epic poems than play."

She makes a face to herself and stifles a laugh. "You didn't know Achilles, did you? Or of Helen of Troy?" How true is the story-

He actually chuckled. "No, I was trapped on a vanishing isle during that time, so I missed a lot of those events." He'd been asked by others before though and it had at least been explained to him.

"Vanishing Isle?"

"A long story, but Artemis trapped me on a vanishing isle in the underworld for 11,000 years or so." With no food, water, company or anything really other then a chest that was useless for survival, and to think she thought she'd given him all he ever wanted and needed during that time. Damned bitch. Still better then Apollo though.

Well then. Now she's just confused. "What did you do to piss off Artemis>?"

"Existed." Such a simple answer and completely serious before adding. "Apparently I'm an asshole. Who knew."

Whoa, he's not kidding.

"Yeah, you mentioned that..." She obviously still doesn't believe it for a second. "I think I like the Disney version of your gods much better, though."

"They're usually assholes in every story I know."

A grin. "Hades isn't exactly a charmer in the Disney version, but I like most of the other stories about him. Maybe its just a matter of perspective? "

Styxx isn't an ass of any kind, at least as far as she knows. Then again, she's been duped before.

"The greatest heroes are always someone else's worst nightmare."

"Hades just likes sticking to himself from what I know about him. Then again, Persephone is his heart, so as long as he has her, lord of darkness isn't so bad.

"All it takes is a woman," she agrees, checking her phone to be sure they're headed the right direction. "They're one of my favorite power couples, even if their initial meeting wasn't ideal." She pauses. "If the story we were told is true."

"Actually, it's just the story that Persephone's mother likes to tell. Persephone intentionally stayed with Hades."

Woof. Foot in mouth.

"Oh." She softens a bit. "Good then. Love stories are much better without rape and overly controlling men."

"Uh, yeah." Congrats Dove, you hit a nerve which is why he just clammed up and suddenly looks very serious.

She feels him shut down beside her and doesn't dare look his way, guilt pooling quickly in her stomach. She's not sure what might have happened, but this is absolutely not a path she wants to walk down with anyone, especially a friend who was so happy just a few minutes ago, even if she can relate. Crap.

"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said that."

Topic switch, immediately.

"...So... this Vanishing Isle... Was that part of the Sahara experience?"

"No. I chose to live in the Sahara. I didn't choose to live on the Vanishing Isle. One surrounded by ocean, one by desert. Two different places. Two different times. I was living in the Sahara just before I ended up here."

He was still more serious then he had been before as he answered.

"....Vanishing Isle is where you perfected your sandcastle cities, isn't it?" She's remembering a little. "I still can't imagine trying to live in the Sahara, but then again, I always favored New York when I was on earth, which... definitely isn't everyone's cup of tea."

She'll just sip hers again as she looks up ahead.

"Yes, it is. Drawing in the sand and building the castles was all I had to do to entertain myself outside of survival."

He'd tried to let himself die, but he couldn't die as long as his brother was alive, but he could still feel pain and hunger.

She shakes her head and tucks her hair back. "How do you survive that? I'm guessing you hunt well, too?"

"Doesn't really matter if I hunt or not. I tried to die a long time ago, but I can't. Not even from hunger, but yes, I hunt well. I can still feel hunger and thirst like anyone else. I just can't die from it."

She stops walking and looks up at him in shock. There are so many questions to ask him all at once, but she's already stepped over one boundary today and she's not sure which to pursue. Tried to die? "Can't die?"

His attempt is a lot more concerning to her, but... 'can't' seems easier to start with.

"No, I can't die. Trust me, I should have a long time ago."

"Can't be killed, either?" It's more of a statement than a question, but she seeks clarity.
