[At first, there's a flicker of an image of a young man's face, chin propped against his fist from an angle below him, an image blotted out by his fingertip coming down on the medallion as he drums it. Otherwise, the silver-haired youth seems to be concentrating on something else--or reading.

It doesn't take him long to notice this idle gesture has done the solving for him, as far as figuring out how to activate the video function is concerned.]

--Easier than I thought.

[Climbing to his feet, the video catches a glimpse of how his rumpled jeans are still damp to the knees, before the sight is obliterated by presumably the palm of his hand as he retrieves it.

A moment later has him peering down into it with interest. He waves a rolled-up pamphlet near shoulder-height a moment as he says:]

Can anyone believe this stuff? Says here a guy named Dresden wrote it.

[Would it kill you to introduce yourself, Riku? Really? Must still be groggy.]

It's been five months.

[ If he's new, he might not know what month it is. Weiss doesn't comment on it, but her tone certainly says that she's a little disbelieving that he couldn't even figure that much out. ]

It's July?!

[Not cool, blurting out like that, but there are some moments that simply call for shock sufficient enough to override even Riku's brain to mouth filter.

He's off by a month, but it's possible he's counting the month of March itself, perhaps because it was around the beginning of the month back where he came from.

And it was past summer already.]

[ She's not giving him the benefit of the doubt on adding here. Just judging. ]

Hey! You can't discount it when it's the beginning of the month, you're skipping like 28 whole days here.

[He presses a fingertip into his open palm for emphasis, furrowing his eyebrows in consternation.

Maths are important, okay.]

It wasn't the beginning of the month when I got here. Either way, most people come from different times, so it's not a surprise if you were off.

[Knuckling his temples doesn't help the absolute headache this topic has turned into.]

OK, great. There's really no telling if time's moving at a different rate on this world, either.

[Better to just assume it is and not worry about the rest. Won't get him back to his friends any quicker.]

Is that how long most of these guys have been here?

Apparently time is frozen back in our worlds, so you really don't need to worry about it. Consider it a long-term vacation.

[ Weiss shakes her head, crossing her arms. ] There are plenty of people who have been here longer than I have.

Heh. My idea of a vacation doesn't involve captivity.

[This, with a half-smile that's more bitter than anything else. He crosses his arms, adding with more sobriety:]

Anyway, I'm Riku. What's your name?

You're not technically captive, you're just in the wrong place with no way to get back home. Which, admittedly, doesn't sound much better but there's plenty to do here and it's been an overall decent experience so far.

[ Weiss does want to get home from time to time though. ]

I'm Weiss.

[Kind of like vice, and Riku can't help but think it's a good thing that's too advanced for kids, else she might've had a rough time of it in school.]

The size of a cage doesn't make it any less of one.

[Riku shrugs, continuing with:]

Mind another question? You got one of those medallions too?

I don't like to think of entire worlds as cages.

[ She looks a little perplexed at what he's asking at first. ] Medallions? [ She pulls out the necklace from beneath her clothing, it being the only thing she can really think he's referring to as a new person. ] This?

[His shoulders rise and fall in a shrug, feigning carelessness when it's likely more a matter of not being too inclined to argue on something he feels this strongly about.

He was more competitive than that, more determined to be right. Some things do change.]

Yeah, that. Seems like the only ones wearing 'em are us.

[Meaning, the people he's interacted with on this communications network.]

Anyone who isn't from here originally has one.

[ She isn't sure about the things she heard that they're not real, but she hardly talks to them enough to even care unless she's at work. ]

[The day Riku has a conversation long enough with one that he realizes they've started saying the same things over and over will probably result in a reaction not unlike what you'd expect of someone having their first run-in with an instant messaging bot.

Hilariously disturbing, probably.]

Do they serve a purpose? I mean, other than distinguishing who's from here and who isn't.

You can't cross the archways without them.

[Something he hasn't really explored yet, but what she says sounds promising. Maybe this world isn't so tiny after all.]

I'll give that a shot. Why waste the present, right? Seeing how we're the only ones who get to have it.

Any idea why, though?

I don't think anyone really understands why a lot of things work here.
