Hello.
It has been some time since I have looked at the network. I hope everyone is well.
I have found myself wondering if anyone here might be interested in exchanging some magical knowledge. I would like to learn more magic. Particularly water spells that are not curative, shifting one's own shape, and crafting illusions. Though I would not be opposed to learning other magics I am unfamiliar with.
What I can offer to teach in return is the art of summoning a Carbuncle. I am not the best of teachers, but I have had some success with this particular skill in the past. It is a way of giving part of your magical essence a physical form.
Please contact me if you are interested in such a trade.

What is a Carbuncle?
text
Magical essence given form. They vary in colour based upon the gemstone you use as a catalyst.
One moment and I will send a picture.
[ she sends an image of her Emerald Carbuncle along shortly after her initial message. ]

That is very cute. I'd love to learn how to summon one if I can.
[It's a little like an Esper but Terra wants to learn more.]
text - sorry for the slow!
I can teach you. It takes time, but isn't a particularly difficult skill to master.
text - I am slow too and totally fine with it
...
I have time.

(( got distracted double-checking on carbuncle lore! haha, but if you're unfamiliar with the FFXIV incarnation of them, carbuncles are battle companions, crafted of aether (magic/life energy) and given form using gem stones. different stones give the carbuncle different properties. for example, emerald is aspected to wind, topaz to earth, and ruby to fire.
the starter carbuncles are emerald, and generally take an untrained arcanist a month or two to summon, then further time mastering the art so that it will obey. kind of like a pokemon at too high a level for a trainer, it will just... not listen. and go trot off wherever lmfao
all arcanist start out with a basic geometry to summon from, and as they master the art they can tweak it to create a more personalized carbuncle. it generally takes at least a year for this unless someone is spectacularly talented, by my estimate. for era it took her about that long, and she's continued working on it over the years to the point where her carbuncle is an extension of herself. it's also unique in that it is permanently summoned thanks to CRAU, except in cases where she is forced unconscious and her aether is cut off.
carbuncle can only move so far from their summoner before losing their form and dissipating. i'd say no more than 100 metres! ))

The wind pulls at her hair and she looks out over the water. It reminds her of friends who had left… of Sidon and how much she misses him.
Terra shakes away her thoughts and waits for Era.]
((That is so cool! And I didn't know any of that. Terra is very talented because she's half Esper (IDK if you know Final Fantasy 6) but she's more-or-less half of a Summon and there for, half magic. So I feel like she'll be able to forge the Carbuncle fairly easily but it'll take her time to forge the bond with it. Terra's element is naturally fire so I feel like wind would be a good start anyway since wind feeds fire lol. They can have a symbiotic relationship.
Anyway, to ACTION! But let me know your thoughts because I honestly don't know too much about the Final Fantasy MMO.))

She lifts her other hand in greeting, though does not say a word until she's close enough that she won't need to raise her voice. ]
Hello. I've brought the materiel for you to study.
(( I'm vaguely familiar! And despite her being part Esper... the summons in FFXIV work a lot differently than other Final Fantasies. It isn't a summon strictly via magic - it's done with actual geometry and mathematics. It's not intuitive magic but mathematical magic, and is a very unique form of summoning among the franchise. If anything I think it would likely be the other way around, with more difficulty summoning and less time to have it properly obey her! ))

[Terra's eyes drop to the tome curiously though she knows that she should hold up her end of the bargain as well.]
I'm not sure where I should start.
((You have a point lol.))

Remind me what a Carbuncle is and what magic it holds?
SO SORRY FOR THE LATE
What magic might you have to share in exchange?
Don't be, I never mind late ;)
Illusion magic.

When would you like to exchange lessons?

I can be available any day at any time. Whatever works best with your schedule.
Would you be able to leave me with materials that I might continue my studies and training between lessons? I am admittedly both a fast and eager learner, particularly in forms of magic.
I have some experience with illusion magic, as my older brother is a master in it. I wish to learn it that I might feel closer with him while we are apart.

Mmm. I can give you exercises or write down things for you, if that helps.
I love learning about new forms of magic, too. So I'm certain we'll get along just fine.
You do? That's good. It will probably make things easier.

Most of the magic I know I do not know how to teach. Arcanima involves geometry; lines and angles and circles, supplemented with written words.
I will write a practice grimoire for you so you can reference to it.
no subject
I see. I appreciate that. I will try to write some things down for you too, then.
Do we need a lot of space or a particular kind of environment to practice your magic?
no subject
A desk would likely be the best place to start for you.
no subject
A desk? You're going to give me a real class, then? [She can't know that but Mavis always wanted to go to school!]
[[ooc: Action thread or handwave? Up to you. :)]]
no subject
(( we could action for a bit to get it started, then handwave some of the like. complex stuff because lol screams at vague lore. also i explained the carbuncle summoning in more detail here, as for how it would work in rp ))
Action!
She goes to sit at a desk, an open and still blank notebook and a pen rest in front of her.
"You seem to have much more experience at teaching than me. So I figured I should prorbably let you start?"
[[ooc: Works for me!]]

Era pulls a pen out of her pocket - a fountain pen, filled with ink she crafted herself - and places it on the table beside the notebook. She then pulls a small leatherbound tome from her pocket as well, then opens to the first set of pages where there is a very basic summoning geometry and notations in painstakingly written English to explain each part.
It was actually as she was re-writing the basic summoning geometry again in such careful detail that Era noticed a line she never noticed before. Proof that going back over the basics regularly is certainly of benefit, she supposes. When adding that correction to her own personalized geometry for Emmy the result was it now had the ability to vocalize.
In fact, Emmy is probably somewhere nearby yip yip and purring to itself, pleased to have some manner of voice again after losing the ability to speak that Xistentia gave it.
"You'll need to practice writing the geometry in great detail. Memorize it. Then once you can visualize it in your mind, write it in your notebook with the pen I've given you. It is filled with aether-conductive ink and will make it easier for your magic to shape itself.
"Then you activate it by having an emerald on your person, touching the geometry with your magic to activate it. You can then lift it from the page and aim it in front of you, where your Carbuncle should come into being. Highly trained arcanists do this all in one motion."
It's difficult to explain, and so Era decides she may as well just demonstrate. She pulls out her grimoire and opens it to the page she uses to summon Emerald Carbuncle, writing the geometry out with her aetherial ink, lifting it from the page and throwing it out in front of her.
Emmy dissipates from where it is across the room, then reforms immediately in front of her.
"I am not quite sure what else I can teach you for now. I learned this all on my own, only refining it later on once I joined the arcanists' guild. It may be best to let you explore the geometry on your own, and perhaps meet once a week so I can see how you're progressing. If you have any questions between lessons just contact me and I will make time that day to see you."
