With Halloween coming up, if anyone needs a chaperone for trick-or-treating...

...well, I volunteer and all that.

[Roland gets a far-off, nostalgic look on his face.]

I never got to take my own son trick-or-treating, back home. He was too sick.

[This seemingly college-aged young man has a child old enough to go trick-or-treating?]

But I went myself when I was a kid, and watched over some of the neighborhood kids when I was a little older, if you care about experience.

Is "Halloween" anything like the Harvest Festival?

[Because "Trick or Treating" is something she is aware of. She's heard of it from Saleh and Ewan, but never got a chance to experience it herself.]

In my country, at least, I think Thanksgiving would be the closest thing we have to a Harvest Festival. Modern Halloween is mainly about scary things and candy.

When is Halloween? Do I need a costume like the festivals back home?

It's the 31st. Trick-or-treating takes place in the evening.

A costume is customary, yes. Though with those wings of yours, I'm not sure how necessary it'll be. Just in case you can't find one on short notice. [A few more accessories and she can just say she's dressed up as a dragon.]

Trick-or-Treating wasn't common where I'm from.

[Not that the Maaka home would get any trick-or-treaters anyways. There was the barrier protecting it.]

I can understand older siblings watching over youngers--but is a chaperone necessary?

It's a bunch of kids running around outside after dark. They need adult supervision so somebody doesn't get hurt or kidnapped or anything like that.

Who protects them from the adults?

[She sounds as bored as ever, but Anju might just be a bit amused.]

That's not what I'm saying.

The chaperone is a trustworthy adult who can call emergency services or intervene themselves if something happens.

It is kind of you to offer, but how can people know that you're trustworthy? You could be lying.

You can't ever really "know". Best friends betray each other every day. You can only decide to have faith and trust in someone or not.

I only made an offer -- it's up to others to decide whether or not they want to take it.
