Halloween Concert [Action/Video]
Who: The Doctor and you!
What: A Halloween Concert worth remembering! (and a little bit of entertainment beforehand)
When: October 30th
Where: Nova City
Pre-Show Halloween Fun!
[a seems like a little street market has been set up outside the Concert Hall in Nova City. Starting about five o'clock there will be booths open for buying spooky treats or costumes, as well as games such as bobbing for apples or guessing how many eyeball gumballs are in a jar. There is a raffle as well with a small donation given to a specific charity, tickets can be purchased for a badass jacket or a badass bike
Feel free to shop, play, have fun or get a sweet or two from the candy pile. (100% 98% safe)
Additionally, notices around inform people admission is half price for people who show up in costume.]
o-o-o-o-o-o-o
[the stage is dark save for the footlights which glow an eerie pale blue. After a moment, smoke begins to pour from somewhere unseen, the footlights dim, the air smells faintly of candy corn. A short while later a single electric guitar begins to play a haunting melody, which quickly begins to rock out as he a neon blue skeleton rises onto the stage in the smoke, playing a guitar that looks like its made of a spinal cord and ribs, glowing white. Another green skeleton with a pale gray bass guitar rises in near sync.
He plays out, fading the end as a moon rises on the screen behind him and bats fly in holographs out into the audience.]
Good evening, Nova City. I'm feeling a little thin these days. A little hollow. A little worn. But here enough to entertain you. [a little black starts to creep into the moon, rounding out here and there, as it slowly begins to turn into a skull]
I see some old faces and new faces, but I think before I begin I should [he grins. Or rather, as a skull, that's the only expression he can have] introduce myself.
[He begins to sing a little sympathy for the Devil, the foot lights flashing on as the song ramps up and flickering on him as he plays, showing him with a white skull mask and a matching top hat and bone white flowers. Behind him the skull moon begins to gape as if it will scream]
[after the song ends he bows a little to the cheers.] You know, they say that this time of year is when the veil between worlds thin. When the things that go bump in the night can bump a little closer to home. The Slenderman. Pumpkin Head Jack, the great unblinking eye of Mgonjigal-- There are so many things that can come through, but I'll tell you, the most frightening are the ones that are always there.
[he reaches out, holding out his right hand; very obviously red against the stark paleness of the rest of him]
Shall we meet one?
[He begins to play Red Right Hand, a deep atmospheric peice the screen behind him shifts to a dark road at night, the skull moon peeking through the trees and white eyes flickering in the darkness of the trunks before finally revealing themsleves to be wolves as they howl at the moon, made of white eyes and white white teeth.
As the song ends, it seems the bassist has a wolf skull mask on, she shifts in place, fingers clawed against the bass a bit and growls deeply]
Yes, yes, I know you're hungry.
[he shifts, looking out into the audience and then grins]
Oh look. Here comes dinner.
[He plays, the bassist adding to the music with low pitched growls that are enhanced by the mics and seem to roll through the whole auditorium. The road on the screen comes to a castle, with lightning flickering around it in time to the music, vaguely reminecsent of a plasma globe..
He goes into the next song without preamble, the scene shifting to inside the castle where a mad scientist like person (who looks oddly 12ish) is thrashing in his sleep.
At the end of the song he bolts upright, eyes wide and mad before the screen goes black.
The skull faced singer looks once more out into the audience]
The moral of this story is: sometimes you wait for the sandman, sometimes he waits for you.
A brief intermission but before that, I think, we need to have a little chat about what Halloween is all about. It's not about candy or costumes or spooky movies or spiked punch. It's definitely not about family togetherness or good will toward anyone. [he grins and points out into the crowd, a sequined glove flashing on the red hand] No, what we're really looking for this spooky time--
Is just a bit of a thrill.
[Once more the bassist begins to howl as the music builds slowly. As it comes to a crescendo and the thriller begins, the screen flicks on to reveal a line of pumpkinheads and scare crows, dancing along and moonwalking.]
The foulest stench is in the air. The funk of forty thousand years [as he speaks and continues to play, the stage and screen begins to darken]
And grizzly ghouls from every tomb, are closing in to seal your doom. [the screen goes completely dark, only glowing eyes remaining before they too vanish. The lights on the stage begin to shrink.]
And though you fight to stay alive your body starts to shiver. [the stage darkens even more, a spotlight narrowing further and further on the skulled man in the center, blue bones appearing dimly where the light no longer reaches. The bassist is either shrouded in darkness or slips away through the fog]
For no mere mortal can resist...
The evil of the thriller!
[the stage goes completely black, punctuated by the mad cackling laugh of the blue boned skeleton before that too disappears into the silence, into the dark.]
\[the lights go up a bit and there is a ten or so minute intermission where concert goers can get candied apples or cider or use the loo.]
[After the time is up, the lights go down and the stage is dark again, the fog is orange and blue this time and a deep floral scent hangs in the air.
The song begins, there is no one on stage, but the screen shows a gated graveyard with flickering jack-o-lanterns. This is Halloween, you know.]
I am the one hiding under your bed, teeth ground sharp and eyes growing red! [as he sings, his ghostly image appears on stage as if in a hologram, sharp toothed and with glowing red eyes]
I am the one hiding under your stairs, fingers like snakes and spiders in my hair [adds a different voice, clearly the bassist, holographic snakes wiggling over her fingers and her hair crawling with a black mass with a lot of legs]
[He continues to sing, their holographic disguises remaining for now until it comes to the next set of creatures, the holographs flickering back and forth as they trade off. He sings once more, the song growing a bit more intense]
Skeleton Jack might catch you in the back and scream [and a voice does scream in something like oooohahaha, sharp and shrill, reverberating through the concert hall] like a banshee make you jump out of your skin!
This is Halloween, everybody scream! Won't you please make way for a very special guy...
[as he sings a third figure rises from behind them, another skeleton it seems with his eyes closed, holding a lit jack-o-lantern]
Our man Jack is King of the Pumpkin Patch, everyone hail to the Pumpkin King!
[the skeleton's eyes open and he sets the pumpkin on the ground, jumping over it and then dancing a bit as he joins in the singing, his spine actually seeming to separate and come back together as he jumps. At the last whee! he takes off his head, with an attempt at a suave grin and bows as the audience applauds.]
[the stage lights rise as the Doctor, still in the skull mask, and waits until Hector has put his head back on before he takes his hand.] Thanks for coming, amigo. I think this is yours. [and he hands him a black sombrero to match the charro outfit he's wearing]
{Hector laughs as he spins his head on, taking the hat with a bow.]
Gracias, Profe! Y gracias a todos. Thanks to everyone. But, that can't be it, right??
Of course not! But we have time for a little context. [someone in the audience boos and he points in that general direction] You paid for culture and culture you're going to get. [a small wave of laughter goes through the audience]
Around the world and the universe, there are many holidays celebrated in this month or its rough equivalent. Halloween, All Saints Day, Lord of the Miracles, Chulalongkorn Day, The Time of the Ascendance of the Monstrum Volantes Farinae Subactae-- and, of course, in my amigo's home country, Dia de Muertos or the day of the dead.
What's that about?
[Hector rubs at the back of his head and gives an exaggerated shrug.]
It's just like it says, Profe. It's the day for the dead. Every second day of November, families get together to remember their loved ones that have passed on.
You know, like me. The living leave us offerings on ofrendas and for that one day, we get to walk with them. Visit family and take the ofrendas back with us to the Land of the Dead. It's a time for remembering, and telling stories. For, you know, celebrating the life that comes before Death and reminding the dead that there are still people out there to remember us.
[as he talks the screen shifts to show a snowfall of soft yellow petals and various faces of people who have passed, some that might be familiar to those who know. ]
There are parties, and fiestas all over Mexico! There are special foods and even special drinks that we only have on Dia de Muertos. But, of course, my favorite part of it all was-
[He spins a rather beaten up guitar in his hand before setting the strap over his shoulder and hooking it to the instrument. The Doctor, meanwhile, sets his own guitar aside and is handed a black violin from someone offstage that he sets under his chin]
Were the songs. One that a very good friend of mine and I always used to play was La Calaca, or The Skeleton Woman. See, during Dia de Muertos, death was everywhere. No one minded her presence, but like this song says, everyone was always looking out for her.
[Hector starts the show this time, with the Doctor accompanying him. The spotlight widens to reveal the bassist, now with sugar skull makeup instead of a wolf skull and flowers in her hair. A troupe of black clad musicians come into the background, their faces hidden under the darkness of their sombreros. As the violin and bass start in, Hector lets out a loud woop, similar to the one when he appeared as Jack, but this one wild and clear and ringing and then the singing begins.( translation provided by sponsor)
When it comes to an end, thunderous applause fills the auditorium and the Doctor steps back to gesture at Hector and the applause booms somewhat louder, a few cheers mixed in on them. Hector took a step forward, carefully moving the guitar to his side as he swept off the sombrero and took a bow. Straightening up he blew a few grateful kisses to the audience before turning his attention back to The Doctor.]
Death is a sweet lady. I’ve come near her door plenty of times but never quite over the threshold.
[he hands back the violin and picks up the guitar, setting it against him]
I feel a bit giddy getting that close.
[Hector gave a tilt of his head, pulling it so the audience could tell what he was doing. Chuckling he rolled his eyes and shook his head.]
Profe, that sounds completely loco.
No, no. Just un poco loco.
[Hector lifts his hand with a dramatic flair and begins to play, singing the first part while the Doctor joins in the other, playing off him as it becomes a duet. For her part the bassist sets her instrument aside and dances with Hector, though in simple spins and twirls but they are both grinning.
When the song ends they both bow and the Doctor applauds]
Little bit of love, little bit of death. That’s all part of life. I suppose that’s why they say eat, drink and be merry; for tomorrow we may die.
[he laughs a bit and gestures to Hector]
Though even that doesn’t stop some of us.
[Hector waves his hand with a laugh.]
Ah, todo en este mundo se acaba. Everything in this world ends. So? That means you have to enjoy it while you can, every second!
I could use some enjoying right now. Especially since it seems we’re going to have a howling good time.
[this seems to be a bit off script as the bassist, who was in the process of putting her skull wolf mask back on, lowers it to stick her tongue out at him. Another laugh on stage and off but then the Doctor begins this round, Hector joining in the singing parts and the bassist adding howls of her own. On the screen, a bunch of animated skeletons with sunglasses appear somewhere in the middle of the song, playing saxophones and other various instruments.
Hector begins dancing once again, too, which takes the Doctor by surprise, but then he just grins and lets him have the floor.
The song ends with a flair and the Doctor applauds again at the dance, thoroughly amused by all this, before turning back to the audience ]
We’re going to end this on a little bit of a slow note. This time of year can be fun, full of adrenaline and heightened emotion-- but at the end, we’re all face the sugar crash and have to acknowledge the bad times with the good.
Until next time then, have a Happy Halloween, and a lively Dia de Muertos.
[for his part, Hector just waves]
[a piano rolls almost mysteriously onto the stage, white sugar skulls glowing on the black sides and the legs of the stool looking like femur bones. Hector sits at the piano, snapping out the beat for a few bars before he begins to play and the Doctor sings. Though, forty-eight years turns suspiciously to eternity
The ending of the song repeats, and again, as the stage lights go down revealing glowing blue and green skeletons as all three and the piano sink into the floor, the fog flowing thick until they are gone and the curtains slide to a close.
The applause once more thunders through the room, whistles and cheers following, growing even louder as they come up on the stage to take their bows and/or blow kisses at the audience.
All in all, a great performance ]

You really need to learn to take some joy in life, Davvy. Not everything is taking over the universe you know. Kick back and learn to smell the flowers. Or play for them. [he waves a olive at him] Want one?
