[Eddie is sweating. He's standing in front of a nice selection of candy at a random grocery store. Venom has some opinions on what looks tastiest but anything, honestly, will do. The selection isn't the problem. He whispers (seemingly) to himself:]

I don't want to do this.

[without your liver you can't even drink.]

Without my liver I'd be dead before I could-

[or we could, you know, eat someone.]

No. I, we don't know enough about this place to pick bad people.

[something with marshmallow. look at that mallow cluster cup, milk chocolate. eddie!]

I keep thinking about Miss Chen.

[EDDIE, I'M STARVING, PICK SOMETHING OR I WILL. and it might be your liver.

Eddie reaches out and grabs four of the mallow cluster cups and shoves them into the pocket of his hoodie.]

2. video: clackity-clack, please talk back

[Eddie is outside, apparently on a rooftop. It's daytime and he is squinting against the sun. The man looks a bit pale, peaky even. The hand not holding the camera comes up to block some of the sunlight from his face.]

Hi. I'm Eddie.

Is the Tribune the only publication here or are there other news outlets? Do any of you watching work in the news here?

[ Julie's out grocery shopping for her small apartment, not really getting all that much. It's just her there, so it's not like she needs tons of stuff. But, considering she came from a zombie apocalypse before showing up here, she's prone to buying a lot more than she should. Namely junk food. She's missed it. So when the guy who is talking to himself is eyeing the chocolate, she takes a moment to be helpful after he stuffs some of the mallow cups in his pocket, a friendly smile on her face. ]

I don't know what it is about those, but the chocolate kind of tastes like wax. It's pretty gross. The good chocolate is in the red and blue foil about...three feet to your right. Unless you like the marshmallow cups, in which case? Ignore me.

[Eddie looks up, startled and guilty. He doesn't like stealing but they've already gone through the small amount of money he was given. Yeah it's gone, in less than a week, thanks to the thing inhabiting his body.]

Uh.

[eddie, unless you want me to eat her liver too, get a move on.]

Sorry, what?

[Listening to that monstrous voice and also carrying on a conversation is not something he's quite mastered yet.]

They, uh, they aren't for me. They're for a friend.

[aww, eddie! i'm touched.]

Upgrade for your friend, then. [ She studies him for a moment longer, not recognizing him from town or the network at all and then extends her hand. ]

I’m Julie. Are you new in town? If so, I can buy those for you. Co sister it a welcome gift that you can regift to your friend.

[we've done a lot more than steal. Which is true, depressingly true, but something about stealing from a shop just makes his skin crawl that has nothing to do with Venom.

But letting this stranger buy him candy feels really weird too.

[Eddie winces slightly at his own outburst, then motions vaguely with both hands in a negative manner to Julie.]

I mean, yes. Sure.

[He composes himself enough to shake her hand briefly.]

I'm Eddie. I wish I could say this is my most awkward moment.

[ Julie jumps a tiny bit at his outburst, looking offended for a brief moment before he changes his mind. There was something pretty odd about the guy, but considering she’s used to Zombies relearning how to be human, so far this isn’t terrible. ]

Hey, don’t worry about it. I’ll get the chocolate bar for you. It’s a pleasure to meet you, Eddie. Semi-awkward moment aside.

[ Grabbing a couple of the chocolates she mentioned, she looks over at Eddie again. ]

So, did you just arrive?

[Right, she'd asked a question.]

Um, yeah. I guess. I mean I've been here about a week.

[get the chocolate or i will. Eddie rubs his sweaty palms on his hips before reaching forward and taking one of the chocolate bars out of Julie's hand before she can protest. He immediately rips it open and shoves the whole thing in his mouth. Venom is very happy and, for once, quiet.

All Eddie can do is look as apologetic as possible as he chews with cheeks puffed out like a squirrel. When he manages to swallow some of it he garbles an apology.]

Sorry, really hungry.

[ Somehow, she's reminded of several of the kids back home. The kids who don't see nice things like candy bars all too often and when they do, they wolf it down just as quick. But this is an adult, so it's not quite the same. ]

I can tell.

[ There's a look of uncertainty and concern on her face as she watches him for a moment, holding out the second candy bar for him. ]

Are you okay? Other than really hungry, I mean.

The Tribune is the only news publication that I'm aware of. For media work, there's always the FAMA talent agency, or I just started a public relations and marketing company.

I'm... not good with the business end of things.

[Marketing, PR, nope. Not only would he be bored to death but terrible at it. Still, it would pay the bills. Eddie's eyes flick to the side as if he's listening to someone out of view of his video.]

Are you hiring?

I am, and one of the jobs I'm looking for right now is video and sound editor.

[He moves to where the sun isn't directly in his eyes, and lowers his hand. Eddie stares off at a random spot again. In his head, Venom is advising him not to take the job as it sounds boring. He ignores his constant internal companion and looks at the screen again.]

I don't know how good I'll be. I'm more of a writer, if you want to give me a shot.

For now, video and sound editor is the only job that I've got open that doesn't involve dealing with people too much. When the company expands, we could talk about you doing some of the writing behind commercials or maybe speech writing if the public relations side winds up getting more business than the marketing side.

[ The too pale visage of a girl who looks no older than 10 appears, peering at the screen with crimson, inhuman eyes. And where those bat wings? ]

As far as I know, they're the only newspaper in all the cities. By the way, you look a little... ill, I suppose. Does the sunlight not agree with you?

[ He'll be in good company if that's the case, she isn't a fan of sunlight herself. ]

What have you found out, so far, about your inquiry? I am unaware of anything more than the Tribune.. which the paper boy has a way of being destructive in the paper's delivery.
