How fascinating.

[Genessia's newest angel is levitating their device in front of them - as they levitate over the Genessia Commonspace building. Their robes are in simple earth tones, and their armour in white and muted gold. There is no face beneath their hood, though it moves as if there were as they watch the device. They hold a large scroll under one arm.]

[But what stands out most of all are their wings: a pair of pauldrons float above their shoulders, from which tendrils of blue-white light shift and sway.]

[After a moment of observation, they continue to speak. Their voice is slow and steady. If a little monotone.]

Greetings. I am Itherael, Aspect of Fate, and Archangel of the High Heavens. It is my understanding that this device allows me to access a communication network for others who have been brought here. Whatever force did this to us must indeed be powerful to have breached Heaven. Has their purpose in these abductions been determined yet?

Also...[Itherael holds up the wad of cash given to new arrivals.] I do not require money, food, or lodgings. If employment is required to attain these things, then I do not require employment.

((OOC: Long story short, Itherael will respond to they/them or he/him pronouns.))

Ehehe, good evening, Itherael, welcome to Genessia.

[One reason he's tittering is because it sounds like a joke name patterned after "ethereal". The other...]

Don't mind Smoker, the first ungentleman to speak with you. He's

[Bitter]

been through much. To give a better answer, we were brought to demonstrate life. Or so we've been told by one of the place's managing spirits.

Oh come on! That's totally the same thing! Just because you phrase it nicer doesn't make it better, or my version any less true!

HI ITHERAEL!! I'M THE GREAT PAPYRUS! YOUR ARMOR IS PRETTY COOL!

I HAVE A QUESTION: WHAT'S MY FATE? IS IT TO BE INCREDIBLY POPULAR AND COOL AND BELOVED BY ALL MY FRIENDS, WHICH IS EVERYONE? OR AT LEAST MOST PEOPLE?

ALSO, IF YOU DON'T NEED MONEY, DOES THAT MEAN YOU DON'T WANT TO BUY ANYTHING? NOT EVEN A CAR? I DON'T KNOW IF YOU'VE SEEN CARS, BUT THEY'RE ALSO PRETTY COOL.

[Smoker don't listen in on other people's calls. That's Ted's thing.]

Hardly. Yours implies a malicious caprice. Imputing motives like that isn't very just sans evidence, is it?

Re: Video

[personal profile] justicereigns 2019-04-12 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
They can infer whatever they want with regard to motive. The evidence speaks for itself. Implying benevolence based on culprits' words alone is, at best, naive, and with new people, downright dangerous.

Re: Video

[personal profile] youfool 2019-04-12 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
Heh, sorry, your allusions mystify. What "they"? What "evidence"? What "culprit"? Are you drunk? This isn't your usual cogency.

Goodness, if I didn't know better I'd say Akainu got to you more than he should've. This is too rash.

[Ted... if Smoker hadn't spent the whole last week drinking himself nearly unconscious, he'd pretty pissed. Luckily (????) however....]

[He just scowls.]
They is Ithereal.

You spoke of the spirits. Even though, or rather IF, the spirits are not the culprits, we have no reason to trust their words, especially if they do not know better. The evidence is, as I directly put, people here being "fucked with."

Akainu isn't here. If he was, I'd be the first one murdered. Then the rest of you.
youfool: (well ackshully)

Re: Video

[Oh he *just* scowls. What a drastic change from the jubilant Smoker he knows and loves.]

It's probably better not to infer "whatever one wants" with regards to motive; that tends to be something only personally known. Unless, of course, they outright tell it to you, as they have.

No reason to trust? They've been right, or at least never proven wrong, about anything so far. Not to mention benefit of the doubt, a benefit it seems only I've learned.

Even if we're as needlessly needled as you say, who's to say the spirits are the ones behind it? Last time we'd an incident it was from one of our own.

Oh ye of little faith. Well, if that happened I'd take your Jitte and avenge.

[He's very confident.]

Akainu doesn't fight fair. Portgas wasn't given solo duel combat either. He died protecting his brother. Are you so certain there's nothing you'd die to protect?

[Smoker may have turned strangely serious, but Ted must remain strong in clownishness.]

And he calls himself a Marine! It's a marvel you let him get away with it as long as he has.

Oh, I'm not certain of much when it comes to death, aside from it happening, and likely sooner than age. Ideally I'll get something indescribably worthy in the bargain; a good gallow.

Re: Video

Every marine has a different idea of justice. Akainu believes collateral damage is always worth it to prevent, what he believes, or says he believes, will ultimately be worse.
youfool: (concern)

Re: Video

[personal profile] youfool 2019-04-12 06:04 am (UTC)(link)
That's not so much justice as a scheme to achieve goods, and that badly ordered.

[A complicated way to say "sin", now that he thinks about it. But then Ted thinks this topic has come up before.]

Will it be any use to explain that that virtue has one, singular meaning, and that all attempts to pervert it otherwise, including yours, are bound to result in just that kind of dysfunction?

It's another marvel that with so many differing and contradictory ideals that Marines could stand to work together. They must have been defined by what they hate; never a good union.

I missed a step.

Or 8.

What do you think Akainu's scheme is?

True justice can't be corrupted, that's the point of it. It adapts. Even if you don't agree with it, it doesn't matter, it's not yours to decide. You have to find your own and follow that path.

Re: Video

Ends justifying means; that's a common enough foible. Hopefully I needn't explain its flaws.

[He can, but he's really, really hoping Smoker is old and, presumably, wise enough to not need it. Please don't make the young educate their seniors. Not like this.]

No, Smoker, there's no adaption, there's no "own" to find. If justice isn't an unchanging always without being a respecter of persons or particularities, it's not justice at all.

Unless by "adapt" you mean, say, the differences between different modes of it, like legal vs. domestic justice.

Re: Video

[personal profile] justicereigns 2019-04-12 06:33 am (UTC)(link)
Right.

[Arches an eyebrow.]

I mean no system created by man can ever be infallible. Sometimes the law is wrong. Sometimes circumstances make it such that the only just thing is to lose.

True justice is universal in that, every person has it in them. But society, circumstances, greed, chaos, all these things make it hard for them to hear.

What's right for one circumstance isn't right for all.

It means not thinking you know everything there is to know, and letting new information adjust you as you need to.

It means sometimes it's a lot better to let pirates go free and save lives, than to kill whole islands to get rid of one pirate crew, no matter how strong or dangerous you think they are. Obviously, Akainu and I disagree on this. That's why I'd be his first target here, I think. To make an example of me.

That too, is my Justice. I've chosen my course, I'll accept the consequences for it.

Re: Video

[personal profile] youfool 2019-04-12 03:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I refer to the hypothetical about islands and crews.
justicereigns: (peering over the sunglasses)

Re: Video

[personal profile] justicereigns 2019-04-12 03:27 pm (UTC)(link)
That's not a hypothetical.

I can't think of a situation where I'd agree with Sakazuki -- Akainu, but he exiled my friend and current boss Fujitora, for failing to do exactly that. Even assuming cooler heads prevail, Issho -- Fujitora, isn't officially allowed on any marine base until he apologizes and promises to kill the Straw Hats no matter what happens next time.

Issho won't though. He's braver than I am. Avenged me and my Captain in his own way.

I can't say the circumstances are impossible though. I can't think of any, I can't imagine it, I don't know that I could make that choice to destroy one city to save entire galaxies, but I wouldn't disrespect someone who did. Just because my hands would shake, and I'd still want to find another way, doesn't mean such an option truly exists.

It's easy to say don't kill an island to kill the Straw Hat crew, because the islands likely wouldn't have survived without that one pirate crew. Or because the islanders are the ones protecting him. But Blackbeard's crew could very well destroy the world. If his entire crew was concentrated in one island, even though the island was hostage, they still helped Blackbeard murder their neighbors, and the only ones left protect him from justice, so would I truly say it can never be justice to use an ultimate option? Like I said, I can't imagine it, but I can't say it's absolutely impossible.

I don't know Ted, that's the point. You don't know what you don't know. Circumstances change, and you have to change with them.

[Ted absolutely can imagine, and knows exactly what he'd do: not budge. To paraphrase Rorschach: always do what's right. Even to Armageddon. It was always going to happen anyway; might as well happen for a good reason.]

Somehow I doubt world destruction's what Blackbeard had in mind.

[That people thought something like that was seriously on the table would explain why even light association spooked Namur.]

Depends on what you mean by one having to change.

Re: Video

[personal profile] justicereigns 2019-04-12 04:21 pm (UTC)(link)
He doesn't have to do it intentionally. Teach believes in fate. If he thinks he's fulfilling some prophecy to destroy the world, he'll do it.

[Nah, Namur gets twitchy because Teach is a traitor who murdered Thatch for a devil fruit, sold Ace to the marines for bait, then used the marines so he could break out most of Level 6 Hell, then used the marines' fight against Whitebeard to kill Whitebeard and steal his devil fruit. Whitebeard's devil fruit could have destroyed the world, in Teach's hands it might unintentionally.]

I used to think there could never be a good pirate.

Fujitora became so certain he didn't want to see the injustices of the world anymore he blinded himself, but he wanted to know what Straw Hat looked like.

As I said with fighting against Akainu, you can't go in assuming it'll be a simple duel of strength and will. It won't. Not ever.

More recently, I found out my co-vice admiral of G5 was a traitor working for the underground. I was forced to help a pirate in order to defeat him.

You adapt what you think you thought you knew.
