[Video] Happy Hatchday?

[The screen comes on to show Qubine deep in thought.]

It's September...which means it's another hatchday for me. I've survived another year...which would be a much greater and more difficult feat where I come from. Somehow I don't quite feel as proud as I should.

[He's had much fewer beasts trying to kill him, and fewer battles to win just to stay alive. It's a strange feeling.]

Then again, it's always good to be alive.

Heh...I wonder if I'm starting to sound like Amadeus...

it is always good to be live. Though... I assume hatchday for you is pretty much like a birthday, correct?

Yes, I believe that's what humans call it, since I hear they don't hatch from eggs...

No, they don't. I mean technically humans are made using an egg, but they don't hatch from one. if that makes sense to you?

[On the one hand, this creature looks like something they assume to be demonic. But this creature also seems to be talking about something pretty mundane. The archangel decides to venture a response.]

Is it common among mortal creatures to celebrate their creation every year?

I would say it is, though it seems to be more common for humans than us dragons. We celebrate life because we are mortal.

[Qubine peers at the screen, tilting his head, curious about the figure himself.]

Who might you be? You look like a rather shadowy figure within that cloak...

[Dragons? Hopefully the dragons of this being's universe aren't like the Prime Evil of Itherael's. They try to focus on the point the dragon makes - and it is an interesting one.]

I see. I suppose that, with such short lives, this makes sense for mortals.

I am the archangel Itherael, Aspect of Fate, and Deputy to Guardian Papyrus the Great. [Because that's how Papyrus said he wanted to be addressed/named.] The "shadowy figure" you see is how we angels appear. [In other words, there's nothing - no face - to see beneath their hood.]

[Qubine nods.]

Indeed. I'm not exactly sure how long our kind lives. I've never seen a dragon die from old age... [Mostly because dragons, at least in his clan, die horrible deaths in battle.] I'm only six years old myself.

[He raises two of his eyes.]

I'm called Qubine. So, you're a deputy under that skeleton? Tell me, is he an effective Guardian at all? Does he actually have any bite to his bark?

[A waver of surprise runs through the light tendrils that make Itherael's wings. It's mild, but if Qubine is watching, it's there.] From what you have said, it sounds as though your kind often face violence.

Papyrus has stood by his duties since the election. He has, for example, included his and his deputies' Pokemon in our patrols, to further the reach of our protection. Though the roles of guardian and deputy are new to me, order does seem maintained in Fayren, which I believe is the purpose of these stations.

That we do. We have to train ourselves to fight just to survive. Dragonkind doesn't seem to be well liked by a great many other species...and then there are some worlds where people revere us. It's a strange feeling...

Yes, the purpose of these Guardians and Deputies is to maintain order. I suppose it is reassuring to hear that Papyrus has taken the job seriously, if surprising.

Why does your kind have so many enemies? [Please don't say demons, please don't say demons...]

I do not understand why that would be surprising.

In my own world, the Beastclans were forced into hiding when dragonkind was born. So it's only natural that they would hate us. Some other worlds view dragons as simply being evil, but that simply isn't the case. There may be evil dragons, but in reality, dragons are just as diverse as humans, if not more so.

[He sighs at the second comment.]

Surely you've noticed how loud that skeleton is. People who claim superiority over everyone else are merely lying to themselves. They're scum who aren't nearly as great and powerful as they claim to be. In fact, they turn out to be quite pathetic more often than not.

I still wouldn't go as far as to say that Papyrus is as "great" as he claims to be, but as long as he's maintained order in Fayren, I'm satisfied.

An unfortunate circumstance. It would seem it is common for conflict to occur between the old, seeking to maintain what has always been, and the new, seeking a place in the world.

[Itherael pauses for a moment, a tense waver running through their wings.] Papyrus does speak highly of himself. However, he does not raise himself up by putting down those around him. Neither his pride, nor his other eccentricities, prevent him from encouraging and helping people. Pride, in excess, is a sin, but I have seen it exemplified in others far more than in him. [Including other angels.]

That sounds exactly like what our conflict is about. While we can sympathize with the Beastclans sometimes, they've done some things I can't forgive them for...

[He pauses, giving some serious thought.]

Perhaps I'll speak with him sometime to get to know him better. I just hope he doesn't give me a headache...

A similar struggle is happening in my world. Though demons are the true enemies of angels, many of my kind believe humans to be abominations because humans are descended from both races. They are of the mind that anything containing demonic essence is inherently corrupted. [Itherael is thoughtfully quiet for a moment.] I suppose that makes my kind more akin to your Beastclans, though humans have not taken our realm from us.

That is wise. I hope your conversation will be fruitful. [A pause] And not uncomfortably loud.

Amadeus?

What? Does the name sound familiar to you?

No. [Shakes head.] That's why I want to know who they are in context to you.

Oh. Amadeus is one of my clan. Always complaining about old age, even though he's not that old. He's younger than myself.

Do dragons age at different rates?
