Go Forth...

WHO: Lust
WHAT: The homunculus goes searching for the missing entity, convinced it has the power to help her become human. Things go badly.
WHEN: October 24, 2014 - Evening
WHERE: Nova City - Intergalactic Zoo

An alien zoo was a fascinating place to those who were less exposed to intergalactic culture. It also made for a fantastic hiding place for a creature that looked like it had been stitched together from a thousand madmen's nightmares. Lust had been searching for the creature for several weeks. At first she assumed that it had fled to some distant location far away from the eyes of the locals. A mountain cave, perhaps, or some dark glen in the woods. At the very least, she thought it would be somewhere in Everglade or Fayren.

Nova City was the last place she thought it would go, so when she realized that it had instead obscured itself in a densely populated city, she had to admit, the thing was more clever than she realized. Her steps were hollow, lonely sounds, echoing in the dimly lit chambers of plexiglass and polished chrome. She watched her translucent image slide over creatures of tentacles and horror, big eyes and fluffy cuteness, and the occasional odd mash of mismatched limbs and eyes.

One exhibit featured a large white worm, smooth and faceless, undulating slowly across its shiny prison. Lust stopped to face it, folding her arms. This. This was it. Perhaps it was because some inner part of her resonated with a being that radiated so much hatred and anger. Her lashes lowered.

"I have a proposition."

There was no reaction. The worm's slow path wasn't interrupted for a moment, nor did it give any indication that it had heard her. But Lust wasn't looking at the worm. She was looking at the gaudy oversized tropical plant in the corner, painted with poisonous purple splotches over a fleshy orange spray of petals half as long as Lust was tall. One of the leaves twitched. Lust waited.

You are foolish to seek me out.

The petals shuddered and started to melt together. The homunculus watched impassively as the plant jerked and twitched, wrenching up its roots and dripping with ichor. Its form melted into something vaguely humanoid, with long chestnut hair and hollow holes for eyes. Little white tubers threaded in and out of its body, quivering madly. The thing's mouth thinned in concentration, and its form solidified, bleeding colors from its body until it stood tall and shapely.

It chose a female form, not too dissimilar from Lust's own. But the skin buzzed like a television with bad reception, and what colors it did retain...the verdant green of the eyes, the crimson stain of the lips...were too vibrant, too unsettling. The cheekbones were too sharp, while the half-lidded eyes just weren't hollow enough. Its stare was seething with hatred and disgust.

"I cannot deny it," Lust replied calmly, the corners of her mouth turned slightly upward. Such a foul creature, and yet it looked upon her as if Lust were the true abomination in the room. It wouldn't be the first time she'd allied herself with a monster in order to obtain what she needed. But it would be pleasant if it were the last, certainly. "However, you're the only one who remains with the power to grant what I seek."

Hn~ The shape of its mouth didn't change, but there was a certain smug gleam in its unblinking stare. And you believe you have something I desire in return.

"I'm not a psychic," Lust shrugged, raising her hands with a casual smile. "All I can offer is my servitude."

A temporary gift. Its cheek bled more than color, clay-like flesh dribbling down its chin. More bubbled up to take its place as it took a step forward, lightly avoiding the fat larva that shared its room. But I am feeling generous, and as you have in fact deduced my location, perhaps I will share a gift with you after all.

The smile faded from Lust's face. She held her ground, unmoving, while her fingertips silently flexed. She didn't unleash her ultimate lance just yet; the thing was probably expecting her to do exactly that.

You wish...to be whole. Again it stepped forward, arching a slim brow in a mockery of a humanesque expression. Yes?

Lust didn't answer. Of course that was what she wanted. It was the only thing she'd ever wanted, something she'd pursued so desperately that she was willing to act on the orders of a madwoman, and share the bed of a lying human with incredible intellectual gifts. She'd known, deep down, that neither would ever grant her wish. But the chance that they might... That alone had made any effort, any sacrifice, on her part worthwhile. She was a slave to her own lusts, and she'd known it. They'd known it too. And this thing knew it.

As effortlessly as gliding through a thin membrane of water, the creature stepped out of the cell with a long, lean leg. Its toes spread just a little too widely with the displacement of its weight, but its gaze never wavered from Lust's face.

Would you like to see the truth?

In half a blink, a gummy hand wrapped firmly around Lust's throat, and its eyes burned. Behind it, the cells of animals burned away, not as if they were on fire, but as if they were an oil painting on display. The edges of their reality curled back and smoked, replaced by a long stretch of rust-colored dirt. It extended as far as the eye could see, an endless plain unstudded by mountains, cities, or even small rocks. It was just the dust, unblown because there was no wind. Everything was dead.

Lust opened her dark lips, her brow furrowing. An illusion? This zoo was an illusion?

No...this went far beyond the zoo, she realized.

The thing tilted its head, the long curtain of dark hair dripping over its shoulder. You seem surprised. You, with so many answers, so many truths. It raised a thumb, gently brushing the smooth line of Lust's jaw. Shall I show you what you are?

With its other hand, it seized Lust's wrist and yanked it upward so she could see it. Like parchment thrown on the fire, Lust watched mutely as her fingers burned away, showing little more than a wispy, grey smoke.

Do you see?

Lust's wide eyes widened further...then began to dull. The stiffness was drained from her body as she came to the slow realization of what she was. And what she wasn't.

Do you understand?

She did. She almost wished she didn't. But it was easier this way, to know that her struggles never would have borne a single fruit. It was meaningless. All of it.

The pale smoke blackened. Then it disappeared as Lust's consciousness faded along with the rest of her.

The creature dropped its now empty hands, allowing the city's illusion to slide back into place. The worm continued to circle absently in its cage, ignorant of the world around it. The creature was alone now. Such a foolish woman. No creature was truly without fear, and that sweet, sharp tang of Lust's panic had been a worthy meal. Its form seemed steady now, enough that it no longer needed to lurk in the shadows. It could move freely as it pleased, and until it wished to be known, none would be the wiser.
