[When the feed turns on, Spirit is holding the camera at an odd angle. It's easily obvious that he's sitting in the hospital, and the redhead is also clearly not excited about it. One arm is tucked in a sling and peeking above the collar of his shirt are bandages. His encounter with Charlotte left him more banged up than he'd like to admit.

Regardless, he's bored--and not a fan of hospitals, either--so he smiles weakly.] So...uh. Everyone doing all right after that snake monster was running amok around town?

[He pauses, and then chuckles tiredly.] Told you guys not to touch the cheese.

[And then there's his daughter slipping in like a ninja.

She sits there for a moment, awkwardly silent, waiting, trying to figure out what to say.

He got himself hurt again.

This is exactly what it's like to deal with her every day, isn't it? They're too much alike; stubborn, proud, duty-driven to their own detriment.

...She never realized how scary that behavior actually was. Maka can't think of anything to say, nothing can make up for abandoning him, shutting herself up. He must have felt as alone as she does right now.]

[Finally:] I know you don't like it, but you'll have to stay here for now.

[Did she think he didn't hear her? Maka was quiet, but he's been staring at the wall in frustrated silence for a half an hour. He's gotten to recognize the footsteps of every nurse and the doctor that's been rounding the halls, and of course he knew his baby girl's--even if she liked to think he wouldn't.

Spirit doesn't look away from the wall when she speaks.]

Sorry, Maka.

[All things considered he's lucky this is all that happened. The doctor in the emergency room had scolded him after identifying the broken arm and ribs, various soft tissue injuries. Charlotte had, after all, eaten him. He'd been lucky to make it out in one piece.]

Didn't expect things to get so out of hand.

[A sigh, he shouldn't have done it at all but.]

I would have done it, too.

[But what would have happened if he had been lost forever? What would she do then? What can she do now?]

Professor always said I was a lot like you, I guess he wasn't just making some dumb joke.

[It's been just over a day since Spirit brought Stein to the hospital, and the only reason that Stein's awake is because he's refused the painkillers they keep offering. He sits in the bed, staring out the window but not actually seeing anything.

Stein has no intention of moving for quite a while.]

[He runs a finger through his hair, the strands still tangled and messy from the night before.]

Nah. He's observant, even when you want him to be wrong.

[The weapon sighs quietly, sitting back on the bed and closing his eyes.] It never was easy to watch you out on missions.

[The only reason Spirit even made it as far as his meister's room is through the good graces of the nurse that he practically begged her to take him there--and was only allowed to go after agreeing to do so while wheelchair bound, a fact which irritated the scythe to no end.

Not that there's much argument--between the painkillers they'd given him in the ER the night before and the various injuries, the weapon isn't in much shape to walk of his own power anyway. Spirit isn't even sure that Stein would remember when he left the afternoon before and would have no way of knowing what had transpired.]

Hey, Stein.

[Stein's in an overwhelming amount of pain, so much so that he would probably be more coherent if he were drugged.

He glances at the weapon, then looks away. That's pretty much just guilt in his expression.]

... Senpai.

[A very overly done dramatic sigh.]

I seem to have missed it. Though I'm not a big fan of cheese there seem to be a number of drawbacks to taking naps during the day. It would have been fun...

[And she actually means it too... She's bored without a whole planet to observe and a species to save! But she'd skipped the whole sleeping thing for a while since getting Stein's measure was more important.]

Is Stein around? He's fairly good for his age. I'd come bring you some actual food but running into each other in a hospital isn't a good idea.

It's our life. It's what we do. The only reason either of us have a hard time with it is because we're family.

[...]

But we can't keep worrying all the time. We have to believe in each other.

Pain medicine won't kill you, you know.

[Spirit rests his forehead on his palm, closing his eyes.]

Don't be so stubborn.

Speak for yourself. I'm surprised I haven't gone gray yet, watching students out fighting.

[Papa is a worrier. It's in his makeup and has been for as long as he can remember.]

I believe in your skill, Maka. I believe in you. I just...worry. I know that I don't need to. [How can he day this without getting himself into more trouble? The weapon hesitates before continuing.] You're still my little girl. I can't...

[He's silent for a moment, looking away.] I don't want to lose you too.

[He's queasy from the pain, but he's not going to admit it.]

What happened?

[The weapon's voice is tired when he replies.]

Yeah. Hospitalized too.

[He coughs, wincing as the jarring motion sending shots of pain down his side.]

Downstairs.

If you're so strong, I could've used your help.

After you take something for pain.

[Stein doesn't have to admit it. Spirit's not stupid, after all.]

Try to lay on one side if possible. It's easier to be uncomfortable for a while rather than in intense pain for a moment. Broken ribs should be on top... Or just adjust the bed to a slightly more upright position. As for your health... You're alive, correct? Hundreds of thousands of humans are unable to state such a claim after associating with me.

[There's a long pause before his window is suddenly easing open. She'd started the process of moving the lock several minutes ago to avoid making a warning sound.]

Would you mind closing your eyes for now? I'd rather converse with someone for even a few minutes before getting judged on my physical appearance.

Yeah, alive. Guess I should take what I can get, right?

[He shifts his position, straightening up in the bed. The movement is just as painful as before, and he guards his side as he does so while holding his breath.]

So long as you agree not to attack, I'm happy to chat with my eyes shut.

[Though the weapon is already doing as she asks, eyes screwed closed against the discomfort. After getting on Stein's case about taking some pain medication, he probably shouldn't be so stubborn himself.]

[Laharl had seen the open thing showing him in the hospital, so the diminutive Overlord decides to show up in person to taunt Spirit.]

Jeeze, why do I have to get stuck with all the worthless vassals? Starting to wonder if you could fight your way out of a wet paper bag.

[Wow seriously he feels like crap. Please, Laharl. So much so that he can't even muster the energy to start apologizing for the catastrophe that was their last conversation.]

A good vassal wouldn't be getting eaten in the first place.

[Yeah he's just gonna help himself to a chair and prop his feet up on something.]

[Coughing, he winces and looks away.]

[Time for another visitor Spirit was no doubt dreading. There's no mistaking the sound of heavy Jade boots stomping down the hospital hall, ending with his door being thrown open to reveal the disapproving glare of the Guardian herself.

The Dragonblood crosses the room until she looms over Spirit's bed, the hard look in her eyes seeming to wordlessly demand an explanation for the weapon's state even while warning this encounter won't be a pleasant one. The pressure of the general's silent glare mounts as the seconds pass.

She's going to make him be the first to speak.]

[To his credit, he doesn't shrink from her gaze. Blue eyes look up at her, fogged with medication, and he clears his throat with a wince.]

Guardian Tepet. Nice of you to visit.

Deputy Albarn. I doubt I can say the same of your conduct.

Perhaps you'd like to give your version of how you wound up here.

Snake witch.

[The weapon tilts his head and glances away.]

The short version is that I've met with Charlotte before, and have managed to calm her down. I didn't think it was going to be easy to stop her, but I wasn't anticipating it being this difficult, either.

[He pauses.] She was attacking buildings and her little minions were violent. People were in danger. Stein was here, and Maka and I... [He trails off.] ...by the time it was clear I was in over my head, it was too late.

You engaged a target--a building-devouring target--without calling for backup. Without even informing your CO.

[She leans over until her face fills most of his view. Her expression shows no sign of softening.]

Enough excuses. You're here because of your own foolishness. I want you to list everything you did wrong. And then you're going to spend the rest of your time in the hospital thinking about how you'll avoid making the mistakes again.
