Betelgeuse turned on his video device, sending a general broadcast out. He made sure he was showing onscreen, then grinned.

"Hey there. How's it hangin'? In case we haven't met, I'm called BJ, because I'm not allowed to say my own name. If you're magic and think you might be able to help with that, let me know, would ya?

Actually, I'm not here to ask for help. I'm offering it, instead. Seems people are expected to have jobs around here, even us dead folk, which, hey, fine, fair enough, don't want to be a drain on your society! Thing is, though, I'm a ghost, a poltergeist. What I do is scare people. Generally, I work as a bio-exorcist. I scare living people out of ghost's houses, see what I mean? Don't give me any grief over it, either! We were here first. Usually.

Anyways, if you got any work for me, just give me a ring on this thing, okay? Okay.

"Bio-exorcist?" Are you joking?

"No, I'm not joking!" Betelgeuse hissed, irritated. "What's wrong with being a bio-exorcist?"

[Whoa! alrighty then, he's as feisty as he seemed.]

That's just a very strange occupation to hold. What are the qualifications?

[She doesn't believe you.]

Betelgeuse transformed into his snake body, glaring down at the video screen.

"Do you really wanna question my qualifications, babes? Being dead isn't enough for you? Well, I gotta plenty of juice and tricks," Betelgeuse boasted, then changed his voice to sound like hers. "Here are my qualifications: I'M A GHOST!"

He switched back to his own voice, sounding smug.

"My powers include, but are not limited to, telekinesis, possession, mimicry, throwing my voice, animating inanimate objects...y'know, MAGIC. Trust me, babes, I got more than enough juice for ya."

If I need anyone that needs haunting, you're the guy to go to! [she lets out a shaky laugh as if she's trying to act all cool. In fact everything is not cool, and she's this close to aborting the mission of getting to know the locals.]

Betelgeuse changed back to his normal form, chuckling, completely mollified.

"All right, then. So, what's your name, babes?"

Um, Weiss. Please stop calling me that.

[Maybe she should have started out by introducing herself. Also, wow, this BJ guy does 180s fast.]

"Sure, sure, sure," Betelgeuse agreed, though rolling his eyes at her. "Whatever, Weiss, huh? Gotcha. So, what, you've never talked to the dead before?"

Um... No, I can't say that I have. It's an extremely rare occurrence where I'm from. In fact I don't think it's ever happened, since dead people usually stay dead.

"Who says I haven't stayed dead? I'm very dead. Anyhow, it's not like you'd know...probably. Most living people don't see us. They can't handle it, so they block us out."

That makes sense. But if that's true how come me and everyone else is able to see, hear, and speak to you?

Honestly? I dunno. This place seems to work a bit different. It's why I need to find someone who can tell me about the afterlife around here. I need to know what I'm getting into.

I'm in training to become a Huntress. We fight the Grimm, monsters where I'm from.

"Oooooo, the Grimm, huh? Heh, that sounds fun. What's a Grimm? Are they big and hairy?"

Huh, so there really are two sides to every story. Seen your kind from the other side but never really thought of it as a job before.

So, what are your ghostly skill sets?

Was everyone going to question his credentials? Betelgeuse shrugged.

"You say what you want done and I'll find a way to do it, babes. I can be plenty scary, when I need to be. Skills? The usual ghost stuff: possession, voice-throwing, matter transformation, mimicry, animating inanimate objects. I can transform myself, like into a snake and stuff like that. That good enough?"

"Ok, to be upfront I'm trying to look after people here so I'd appreciate it if you weren't stirring up too much trouble for people that don't deserve it."

Look, she was being nice, she's grown as a person.

Betelgeuse took an already lit cigarette from his pocket and began puffing on it, smiling. He shrugged.

"Define 'don't deserve it.' 'Cause, no offense, I think you living types do deserve it, when you try to drive ghosts from their homes, exorcising them and that shit. It's not like we take up much room, know what I mean?"

"And if they weren't trying to scare people most of them go by without even being noticed."

Ha! She has a friend who's a wizard, they've actually discussed this sort of thing before.

"So it almost seems like the living impaired there are starting things. But I could see that being an issue if it was the other way around."

"HA! You keep telling yourself that! It's not our fault the living scare so Freaking EASILY. I mean, COME ON! All a ghost has to do is peek out of a mirror, make something move, or appear where someone doesn't expect and most of ya freak out. Hell, the reason most living types don't see ghosts is you can't handle it. Most ghosts are just trying to get on with their afterlife! You do realize ghosts have to haunt someplace on Earth for 125 years, right? It's not like they got a CHOICE in the matter."

Betelgeuse fired this entire rant off rapidly, gripping the videofeed tightly.

Pro-tip. If a ghost or similar entity ever asks you to remove a Name-related binding on itself: DON'T.

Betelgeuse scowled down at the text message, rapidly sending one back.

[HEY, JERKWAD! HOW ABOUT NOT RAINING ON MY PARADE, HUH?? I AM NOT AN IT! I AM A HE, NOT THAT YOU WOULD KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THAT! What business is it of yours, anyways? It's MY name and I can get it unbound, if I want to! What's wrong with my name being unbound??]

[Cause he doesn't have the patience for this newfangled texting stuff.]

Harry Dresden, Everglade Guardian and wizard. Fair enough, I'll hear you out. Who put a binding on your name and why?

Betelgeuse preferred speaking face to face himself, so switched to video feed.

"Oh, hey, Harry, good ta meet ya, someone recommended I talk to you. Don't remember who it was, really, some babe. Might have been more than one person, actually. Thing is, you're the second person to ask who put the binding on my name, but the answer's no one. It's not somethin' that was done to me. It's just part of how I am, know what I mean? My name's been bound, as you say, ever since I died."
