[5th Soul] [video]
Actually, the dragons reminded me of something.
[What did they remind her of? A book or something to that extent?]
I kinda miss having a pet.
[...Maka no.]
[She seems to realize that this is a very silly observation and smiles sheepishly.]
I mean, geez, it's been ages since I've seen my cat. I know she always does her own thing, but you'd think she'd try to make an appearance on my birthday.
[That's a very strange way to think about it (or to even mention one's own birthday), but either way she shrugs.]
Actually, maybe not, I don't think I want to know what qualifies as a "present" for a magic cat. Sorry I brought it up, even.

I wouldn't say Blair is so much like a dragon, but she has a lot of magic.
no subject
Blair is... your cat?
no subject
Maybe...that's just how it is in my world. I wouldn't know, I've never personally met a dragon.
[A pause.] Until now, I think.
[He looks strangely human-shaped for a dragon though, then again if they're magical creatures they could change shape too.]
Blair's the name of my cat...though, "my cat" is a very loose representation of it, she's more like a roommate that chooses when she's going to be a human and do human stuff and when she's going to be a cat and do cat stuff.
no subject
Uhm, that is... [Well, there was nothing he could change about it now. A conversation like this wouldn't call the attention of everyone, right? Plus, he was too honest for this.] That is true, yes. [His right arm is a give-away as it is a claw, though he tried to hide at least that one behind bandages.]
So she is like... a shape-shifter?

["OH OKAY."
"OH OKAY."
ALL RIGHT, MAKA, WHATEVER.]
I might have some questions for you, but this isn't the place to talk about it.
[As if outing him as a dragon wasn't already going over the line??]
She just says she's a cat with a lot of magic, I actually thought she was a witch when I first met her, since she dressed like one. But knowing her that might have just been to mess with people. I haven't seen her turn into anything else, just a human and a cat.

That sounds like a rather ominous being. [But now that his first shock has subsided, he realizes something.]
Please forgive me. You said it is your birthday today, is that correct?
no subject
Maybe...the library? In Genessia city, I mean. I work there and I don't think anybody would bug us.
[Right Maka, just casually engage someone that you don't know.]
--Oh, but it can't be right now, I have to go home and make dinner when I'm done with work.
[Really, she's way too casual about it, like she's just meeting with a classmate for study time or something.]
She can be, I guess. She hasn't tried to hurt me since our initial meeting, though. [Because that's reassuring.] ...Hmm, yes, I did.
no subject
The library? Alright, I think this should work out.
[It is okay for him, considering he knows nobody here. At least she wasn't being hostile!]
If that is the case we could meet on another day. [Plus, if it's her birthday she probably has other things planned.]
D-did she try to hurt you then? [Not that he can judge people for that. The first time outsiders came to his village his initial thought was to tear them all apart with his claw. Not that people needed to know that.] Happy birthday. [It felt kind of awkward since he didn't really know her, but he was polite enough to wish that anyways.]
no subject
[She does not say that defensively but gently, explaining so he doesn't get the idea that Blair is violent or something.]
I guess the fact that she had nine souls didn't tip anybody off to her being a cat and not a witch.
[Another pause, then:] That was a long time ago, though, and we've made peace with witches now.
[Just...just in case he was gonna start thinking she was some crazy witch hunter or something.] Anyway, thank you. My name's Maka, what about you?
no subject
Ah! [He had totally forgotten to introduce himself.] I'm Hakuryu. [He hesitates for a moment. While that's what he has been called for most of his life, he can't deny he has gotten used to be called by his given name again.] Or Kija, if you prefer using the name my father and mother used. It is nice to meet you, Maka.

[Oh. Right, this isn't a place where everyone knows it ANYWAY because of her stupid blabbermouth father shoving it in everyone's faces.]
No, it's actually about pets. I mean, it'd be rude to ask people I don't know to get me things on any day, a birthday doesn't make it all right. [She also thinks "clever" might be overstating it, but then it's possible Weiss was being sarcastic.]
video;
video;
...Listen, I don't...I don't like asking for things. It's not because I think I'm super kind and selfless or something, it's just that my dad would always make a giant deal out of my birthday and force everyone to participate somehow. So...if I did mention wanting something, he'd threaten the person I was talking with to stay out of "family business" and run to get it for me.
[God this sounds so stupid.]
Sorry, I know it sounds ridiculous, but you tend to be a little more cautious when your dad can turn his hands into blades.
video;
[ Usually not in such harmless ways like birthdays, but she's trying to relate here without actually saying anything other than that she's rich and her dad is highly influential. Which is supposed to make a point for her credentials and not be bragging at this point. Weiss is trying, okay. ]
The best way to get around a parent's... decisions is to go far, far away from them for as long as you need. Personally I would suggest you treat yourself to a vacation and not tell him where you're going so you can enjoy your birthday.
video;
[Well, Maka isn't reading it like she's bragging at least, she thinks Weiss is actually being quite kind to someone she doesn't know that well. Besides, though Spirit isn't as smart as his daughter, he did realize that Maka hated having the spotlight put on her and that business was making her unhappy.]
Back at home I had already moved out to attend the Academy, and here I have my own place...it's just he decided to move himself down the hall. All the more incentive to get better paying work for myself and my roommates so we can get a better place, I guess.
[As for a vacation, Maka never goes on those, but she'll think about it at least. She has all the time in the world presently.]
Thank you, Miss Weiss.

[ Could they really call Blair her pet? Or a freeloader? ]
Maka, I don't suppose you could tell me when you're headed back to the apartment.
[ Not 'home', because it's not, even if they've done their best to make it sort of into one. But anyway. ]
video;
I'm on break right now, my shift ends in another two hours.
[A pause, she squints at the screen.]
Don't do anything crazy while I'm gone.
video;
It's more Soul that I'm worried about, but good to know.
video;
[...That.
Maka.]
Unless you're with him, I guess.
video;
Wait, what's that supposed to mean!
[ He is a completely stable influence in-- okay, no he isn't. He is probably the least of the stabling influences in this household! ]
video;
[Of course.]
video;
He's so unamused! But hey, he'll get over it. ]
Quite. I'll see you in a few hours. Do arrive on time, or dinner will get cold.
video;
HOMOEROTIC FIST FIGHTS?
YEAH, SURE, THAT'S TOTALLY OUT OF LINE.]
Oh, don't pout at me like that, it's not even Soul's turn to make dinner tonight--I'll be back in time.

Top untrue statements: 1. Maka's thighs can't crush skulls 2. Black*Star and Kid don't frequently get into scufflesEither way, Kid being the odd cryptic fellow that he is aside, Maka heads back to the apartment mentally running through her list of ingredients and methods for preparing after work is done and she says goodbye to her coworkers.
The complex isn't on fire when she comes back, so at least there's that, but it's very quiet when Maka gets through the door. Hm.]
...I'm home! [Making sure to put on house slippers as she says this, of course, as the sign she hung up says "leave your shoes at the door!"]
[I don't even know what this would be considered, action or what]
still behavingstaying out of trouble. He's been busy at work or cleaning the apartmentbecause just because the floor looks clean doesn't mean he can't convince himself he sees blood spots. Ew.But it's Maka's birthday. He knows she's not been big on celebrating it, not in a very long time. That doesn't mean he'd ever stop remembering it, after all. He's trying really hard not to get crazy about it, so instead of a big surprise party, he's slipped a card under the door. It's got a picture of a cat in a witch's hat on it (totally bought it at Halloween, since he thought it would remind her of Blair. The inside that says "happy halloween!" has been scratched out in sharpie and it's replaced with 'happy birthday!'). The card is simple
and sappy, he's totally a sap:Dear Maka,
I can't believe another year has passed! I know we don't always get along as well as we could, but nothing makes me happier than to see you smile. I hope you have a wonderful day. Happy birthday!
Love, Papa.
PS: I have a little gift, but it didn't fit in the mail slot. It's at my apartment. If you don't come get it, I'm giving it to Kid to give to you.]
[action]
She's definitely prepared to say that when she knocks--three raps, nice and sharp as expected of Maka.]
[action]
When he opens the door, he's holding the gift for her birthday, wrapped in dark blue paper. It looks like it may be a book from the shape and size. Atop the book-shaped object is a smaller box.
The book is another one from when she was small, another old printing of a story he'd read with her (Goodnight, Moon had been more of his favorite than hers, but they'd enjoyed it just the same). In the smaller box is a gold chain; he thought she might prefer that for the ring he'd given her and realized she still had with her, as it would be easily hidden--and protected.]
Happy birthday, Maka.
[Video]
Oh, Suna--I was trying to wish Maka a happy birthday. Can you scoot out of the way, just a bit?
[As if the fox understood him--she did, after all--it slid out of the way, revealing Luke to be sitting at the table, gingerly scratching the creature's ears.]
Happy birthday Maka!
Maybe Miss Satori can help you find a pet. She gave Suna to Koishi, to give to me. It's a lot less lonely in my flat now!
[Video]
[But it is cute and kind of a kittydog, isn't it?]
Thanks...I think I'm going to shelve the idea of getting a pet until we move into a place that's not an apartment, though, or at least something a little bigger. First I'll have to knock the lazy bums I live with into getting jobs.
Re: [Video]
[Gosh though he's happy to scratch her ears--and for her part, Suna is enjoying it.]
Miss Satori's note said she was psychically trained. Plus, I can talk with her and she understands me--and I understand her! We've gotten along just fine, right Suna?
[Yes the little fox just yipped in agreement with him.]
Oh... Kid's started working with me at the tea shop. I... just wish he'd stop rearranging the shelves every time he comes...
