1st Trial [video]

[It's been a couple of days since her arrival and Darklaw has been industriously working to set herself into lodgings. The video opens in a small sparsely furnished room. From the look from of the room itself it seems to be in Fayren. There's a woman in view who looks mostly serious but there's a faint smile playing on her features as if she's rather amused by the whole affair.]

Common wisdom states that there is nothing beyond the walls of Labyrinthia. As such, it would seem that this collection of cities should be considered the deepest of heresies against the Storyteller. That this magic that could bring any here on a whim flies in the face of His Story.

[She stops for a brief second, her expression becoming more solemn somewhat.]

However, upon investigation I have discovered a few things that lead me to believe different. The major one being the recent infestation of dragons. [She's spent a few hours going over the more recent entries. She shakes her head.] Any member of the Inquisition would know what the significance of that would be. Dragons and black cats are the heralds of the gravest evil: the Great Witch Bezella, mother to all other witches and bringer of disaster.

[There's no small amount of loathing as she says that name.]

As such, as scant evidence as that is, I will see to it that I shall help bring the Storyteller's justice here as well. I am the High Inquisitor Darklaw, however little that title means here. Even without the Knights at my back, I shall try to do my best to serve this new found town until the Story states that I return.

[With that, she reaches out and turns off the video quickly.]

Tell me, miss... "Darklaw" was it? Have you ever had any experience in the construction of walls yourself?

Then you should know full well that it is rather impossible to construct walls from one side alone. If these walls of yours truly were at the edge of existence, it would be nigh impossible to construct them and have them remain anything more than flimsy piles of brick.

[There's a small smile playing on her face again.]

I cannot deny such a line of thinking. As I said, the common wisdom is what says there's nothing out there. Yet, of course, there's the possibility the walls were created before the threat of Bezella reached it's fullest.

And yet that is another point of contention. How can one person be the mother of all witches? This place should be proof enough that this assertion is false. We come from a myriad worlds, each with their own incarnations of witches, monsters, and gods.

The only thing an absolute statement proves is the foolishness of the author.

How dare you say that dragons are heralds of the gravest evil? [His expression was angry, to say the least.]

You don't know? Well, I suppose it can't be helped... this place seems out of touch with the Story. [She shakes her head.] Dragons are associated with fire, are they not?

[nobugs]

It would depend on the dragon. [He still couldn't stop his glare. Perhaps it was because of people like her why his brothers had to go through such a harsh time in their villages.] I do not know where your story comes from, but I will not let you sully the name of the dragons.

In Labryinthia, dragons are truly rare creatures and only have been seen during terrible tragedies. [She lowers her head.] Such as the Legendary Fire, many centuries ago, when the Great Witch started her reign of terror. She summoned a great fire dragon and had the beast burn everything to ash.

[That sure is a familiar voice. He remembers Darklaw well from their adventure in Labyrinthia...and though he wouldn't call her a friend initially she is a very familiar face--which triggers an almost excited desperation.

Someone from home is here!

He's so excited he can hardly get his words out.]

Miss--Miss Eve?!

[She recognizes the boy. The professor's apprentice, right? Luke. Even though officially, she didn't know him by name she certainly recognized him.

What makes her freeze, for just a moment, is the name he gives. 'Eve'. It's not a name she's heard in... a very long time. She regains her composure quickly and shakes her head.]

You're the boy that's been seen with the man with a dark hat. Layton, I believe his name is. I'm afraid I don't know anyone called by 'Eve', however.

[There's only a moment or so before the enthusiasm fades. Luke frowns.]

But...

[But what? Technically he is the boy that's been seen with Professor Layton.]

Don't you remember?

[She frowns herself. This...was disconcerting to say the least. Had it really taken Layton such a short amount of time to find things out? No. Not even he was that good, especially with so little information available. She herself made sure that nobody could figure it out without her help.]

No. I don't know how you've heard about that name... it's not a common one in Labryinthia.

Perhaps the truth is stranger.

If you take for fact that naught exists outside of the story, but here you are outside of anything you've ever known, the easiest logical solution is simple: The story's a lot bigger than you could have realized.

There are many strange things in the world. That doesn't make that thought the most logical solution.

If not that, then what is?

I'll clarify one point: I know of no "Bezella".

It would depend on the person, would it not?

[She shakes her head.]

That seems to be a common theme.

Can you tell me more about Bezella? Where I'm from dragons are pretty rare and respected, so we should probably double check if they're doing anything witch-related. They could've come from somewhere nice.

I can tell you the story of why the Great Witch is associated with them, yes. [She nods before speaking.] Several centuries ago in Labryinthia, the Fire Festival was held. This even happens every year--even to this day--and in the past it's purpose was to give tribute to Bezella to keep her appeased. Yet, that night for reasons that are lost to us, she wasn't. While the townsfolk had their festival she summoned a great fire dragon and had it burn the entirety of Labryinthia to the ground.

Now, the Fire Festival is to honor the memory of those who died in that event.

[ he listens carefully, paying complete attention to her words, nodding along ]

Did she used to look over anything before? Were there a lot of witches that aren't around anymore? Spirits can get upset when things get thrown out of proper balance. This one time Hei Bai - that's this big panda spirit- turned into a monster and started destroying homes and kidnapping people because his forest got burnt down.

From what records of the Story tell about those distant days, the Great Witch wasn't a protector but she was treated with distant respect and fear. She was quite capricious. Witches weren't as populous as they are now but there was no Inquisition. It wasn't until that disaster did they start to be the destructive forces they are now. [She closes her eyes, as if in memory.] After the town was rebuilt, the Storyteller had the great walls built. To keep Bezella out. Yet, she started to hide among us.

To find where she is hiding is the Inqusition's purpose alongside protecting the people from witches. I believe I might know who she is yet... it may be heresy to even consider it.

Um... you keep mentioning His Story or the story teller? I don't quite think I understand? Are you thinking this is a story or something, or was it a story back at your home world?

Neither. The Storyteller is the one who rules over Labryinthia. He writes the Story--I suppose you could call it the record of past, current, and future events of Labryinthia.

Um... He basically tell you what will happen and you just accept it because that kind of what it sounds like. it's that or something close to a King is another of what it sounds like.

Although the whole recording past, present and future things is kind of like something else... I'm not sure if I could ever understand your world.
