04 - Before the Fray [OTA]

[Action]

[With Gilgamesh finally making his move, Dairine is hurrying to complete her battle preparations. Wizardry wasn’t just saying a few words and getting the result you wanted. Oh no, there were calculations, energy sources, and variables to take into account. Her software version of the Manual might speed things up a bit for on the fly work, but she couldn’t rely on that alone. After all, Spot would still need input. Then there was the trouble of powering the spells.]

[Which is what leads Dairine to Nova City’s Scrapyard. There might be something there to help fuel some spells. She's not too well-versed in using a physical aid for the job, but she has seen it done before. Dairine isn't too picky as she shuffles through various junk. Even a dead battery would be useful for this.]

[Some time later, Dairine is back in her room, fussing with Spot. Dairine hoped to have at least a few good spells on standby for the battle. Behind her, Sylveon and Cottonee are playing. After a brief glance back, she turns on the video. It shouldn’t be obvious what she’s up to after all, even if Gilgamesh happens to be watching right now.]

I’ve noticed that the wild Pokemon seem to have disappeared. At least I haven’t run into any for a few days. I’m surprised they lasted so long to be honest. The last time something like this happened to me, the changes lasted two weeks at best.

[Her eyes look distant for a moment, reflecting sadness that she refuses to let show on her face. She's been here before, with a different team, in a different place. She remembers how it ended: with her waking to only one left. Dairine picks up the videophone and leaves the room. Once she’s out, she speaks in a lower tone.]

Has anyone discussed with their Pokemon… what might happen?

I feel like I probably should. We don’t know how much longer they’ll stay, and some might be more dependent than others. We should plan ahead. But… I don’t know. I don’t want them to think I’m abandoning them.

[She scoffs at herself, eyes refusing to look at the video anymore. There’s too much pain there she doesn’t want others to see.]

Maybe I’m just selfish, wishing things would stay this way.

What do you mean, 'what might happen'?

Wait, they're going to leave?

[ This was news to Porrim. She wasn't here for the last event. ]

I suppose I hadn't thought of that.

Escape isn't really something I want.

I don't think that's it. There are some very powerful people and things floating around, and its usually up to us to manage things.

The cities don't seem to be in any rush to stop Gilgamesh, for instance.

That's a rather cynical perspective. I think that the cities want peace, myself.

It's rather foolish to attribute a singular intelligence and motive to an unidentified, ambiguous entity, in my opinion.
