[Locked/Backdated] Presents!
WHO: Koiball and Eyebrow-Grump
WHAT: Birfdeh prezehntz
WHERE: Grumphouse
WHEN: Nov 15th
WARNINGS: None
When Satsuki returned from work on the 15th she'd find her apartment a bit out of sorts and the window left open and smudged with fingerprints... from the outside. No doubt this was the doing of the littlest member of the guardian's inner circle who, after a few moments, could be spotted resting on the disheveled couch, reading one of Satsuki's boo- wait, was that The Art of War?
Koishi looked up after several moments, back down, and then back up again, glancing about before setting the book down on the arm of the couch and using a corner of a blanket to mark her page. It perhaps shouldn't be too surprising that she knew of it considering she had referenced it in the past before in her more serious moments.
"Miss White! You're home!" She hopped and zipped over to the guardian, giving her a big, unrestrained hug that went on for just a bit too long. "I've missed yooouuuu." She seemed a bit calmer than her usual hyperactive self, but the fatigue from her hunger seemed gone as evident from her brightly glowing eyes and the ease she was floating with.
She had something in her hand. Something poorly wrapped in brown paper and far too much tape...

When the door slides open, Satsuki isn't by herself- There's a rather fashionable poodle-like creature by her side with the fluffiest of fur groomed and dyed to give it an elegant, kabuki-like appearance. As for the window, it being left open is hardly an issue these days, her Gothitelle (formerly Gothorita) just closes it before returning to its business.
All that aside, Satsuki is tired and somewhat aggravated, as there are so many headaches she has to deal with, one of them being far more frilly than the others. While it is rather nice to see the abomination-tan in high spirits, the affectionate gesture makes her hair want to stand on end which makes her furfou growl in annoyance.
"I am. You appear to be doing well." the young lady murmurs as she raises her leg to a footstool to remove her boots. "What brings you here?" Beat. That is a lot of tape.

"Well it was your birthday recently. So I brought a present. There's more than one thing in it because you also helped sis and I and we really really appreciate it. I don't think either one of us would have thought to go to a morgue. You humans tend to be so protective of your dead." She looked thoughtful. "It honestly puzzles me as to why. Once the link between body and spirit is completely broken there's nothing left of that person but meat. Why not put it to use?"
She tilted her head. "Then again, some highly spiritual humans tend to not have that link severed until some time after death. And if the spirit is lingering... I dunno, would that be offensive?" She was thinking very seriously about it.
A moment later she blinked and looked down at the package in her hands. "OH! Yeah! Here!" She held it out to Satsuki. "It's late so open it right away please."

"Loss of life does not undo the memories of those we grew up with or gave birth to." she replies, "Actually, it would be more accurate to say that those that can undo them would be viewed as unstable. Since I have spent time with you youkai, I have come to understand how that could be seen as selfish." she then shakes her head, "I am unfamiliar with the spiritual side of things, so I cannot really provide insight on that en-"
Impromptu gifting. Oh, so it was for her after all and not just Koishi messing around with the stationary table again. Well that's good. Without further ado she undoes the tape to attempt as little damage to the paper as possible.

Apparently she had done both. The first layer gone revealed two separate items, the smaller significantly heavier than the other. The lighter one was rectangular and, when unwrapped, revealed a polished wooden box containing several pressed blocks of tea leaves. Each smelled a bit strange, unlike anything Satsuki had ever tried, but they certainly didn't seem unpleasant.
The second item was wrapped a bit more tightly and seemed to warm in Satsuki's hands as she removed the paper. A blue oni half-mask stretched into a frightening snarl. The craftsmanship was likely beyond that of any human master. The detailing was exquisite. No paint had been used to achieve the blue color, the dull metal looking like it might have been given its hue by heat and then dulled down to reduce the shine... but could you even do that with hell metal? The lips and nose had been framed in gold and some white. The teeth were more of an ivory color as opposed to pure white, each edged with gold and likely made of carved bone. The interior showed that some wood had been used to make it smoother if it was to be worn and to reduce the weight.
"You already have Bakuzan so I thought something more protective would be better. And I would have gotten a full mask but they have horns and buggy already gives you horns so..." She shrugged, her smile never wavering. "Also, I brought some mild sake brewed by the oni and some fruit from our garden. They're on the kitchen counter. Don't worry too much about the sake. I made very very sure to taste some of the batch that was given to me to make sure that it was okay for a human to drink."

One can never go wrong with tea, though the scent certainly concerns her. Of course she's unfamiliar with them, and can't help but question if these are even safe for humans or not. That she tested the sake first is a good sign, at least, but she still can't help but wonder. She'll ask Satori later. "I've never seen tea leaves like these before. I hope you do not mind if I have Luke brew them for me." she says with a small smile.
Then comes a really big surprise. She recognizes the artifact as an oni mask rather quickly, though only half? Still, half or whole it's a piece of art, culture and craftsmanship she really admires. She's already thought of a place in her office that she can display it when-
"Protective?" Her left brow raises in mild confusion and she heads toward one of her standing mirrors in the living area. After she removes her cap, she places the mask over the lower half of her face. To her surprise, it fits rather well and she thinks it looks pretty nice. ".. How, exactly?"
no subject
The mask seemed to subtly shift on Satsuki's skin, adjusting its fit and holding itself in place, though not so tightly it could not be removed. As she exhaled, steam wafted from the mask and a prickling began on her shoulders, down her arms and spine, and up the back of her head. The air was shimmering as little waves of heat and eventually small blue flames began to appear. They gave off the appearance of heat, though they were not that hot to the touch. At least as far as Satsuki was aware.
"It's... Mostly for intimidation's sake." Koishi admitted. "But the fire is real. It will go away when you take the mask off. Beyond that it can disrupt magic. You said you wanted a way to combat magic and now you can cut through or parry magic and you can block magic too!" A pause. "Raw magic and fire, mind you. If someone is throwing other elements or something you should avoid it." She tilted her head. "The oni also said something about it 'refining strength' so I'm pretty sure you're stronger now. Physically... Probably... I didn't notice a difference when they gave it to me to try."
no subject
Satsuki removes the mask, to look at it from the front again with a somewhat mystified expression. "So the blue flames can stand against other forms of fire magic?" she asks. Ugh, magic is so damn confusing. Other elements seem more obvious at least, so maybe it is only complicated because she thinks too hard trying to figure out the rational behind how it all works.
Eventually she smirks once more. "Intriguing. I will be looking forward to our next training session, then, it appears there is still much for me to learn. These are all splendid gifts, Komeiji." if allowed, she will reach out to set her palm atop the small ones hat. "Thank you. Would you be interested in sharing a cup of sake?"
no subject
Koishi brightened when Satsuki mentioned training. "I bet you could learn to channel this magic too. Also, you've been doing so well with Bakuzan if we go down I bet they'll add a glyph to the enchantment." A pause. "You might have to 'prove yourself' though... but with Buggy you'll do great!"
She leaned into the hand, actually drifting down a little bit... but it didn't last long. The moment Satsuki mentioned 'sake' Koishi was up in the air again. "Yeah! That's why I brought it. Birthdays should be happy and happy times need a toast with sake!"
She was gone before Satsuki could reply. On the counter were two containers of sake. Both were made from clay but the smaller one was covered in weathered paper seals that actually looked baked under the enamel. Koishi appeared next to them, sitting for once, feet kicking a little as she filled a regular sized dish from the smaller jug and a much larger dish with the other. She offered the guardian the smaller dish, keeping the more youkai-sized one for herself.
"Happy birthday Satsuki!"

(SUDDENLY NUI)
Nui is leaning against the front door - when did she get here?? She idly lifts up an object to examine - it's the half-mask that Koishi just gave to Satsuki!
"Oh, this is pretty neat! Now, I feel bad that I didn't get you anything!"
no subject
"Curious.." Whenever Koishi talks about the oni and their ways of war, she appears visibly interested rather than her usual neutral expression. The magic is interesting as well, of course, but most important is Koishi's encouragement as even after all this time it can be difficult to evaluate her own performance.
But all that aside, Satsuki accepts the dish when something doesn't feel quite right. The reaction time is too late, as the wild Nui has appeared with the newly acquired artifact in hand. It's no surprise then that her light mood drops and her eyes half-lid. "Do you truly?"
no subject
She put the mask to her face. It didn't quite fit and - notably - it exhibited none of the special effects that it had on Satsuki earlier. Nui didn't seem to react either way, however. Perhaps she'd actually just walked in, rather than been spying on them?
Nui's voice was suddenly coming from the bathroom in the hallway. "Oooh, fearsome! Satsuki-chan will certainly make many monkeys wet their underthings wearing this!"
She poked her head out to look at her again. "Then again you've never really had a problem with that, have you, Satsuki-chan~?"
Poor Koiball :c
Regardless, satori youkai were not used to having unexpected things happen... or, at least, have people act in unexpected ways. And even with Koishi's powers broken as they were, this still applied, but she seemed to have shut down as opposed to running away.
Regardless, it meant Koishi hadn't sensed Nui until the moment she spoke.
Koishi jumped this time when Nui's voice came from the bathroom, nearly spilling the sake dish. Her head snapped to look at the source of the voice. The glow in her eyes was starting to return though, opening and closing her mouth once. "What... How... Eh?" She shook her head. "I've never encountered a power like that before. There's not even a manifestation of power like when someone teleports! That's really interesting!"
At least she seemed to be recovering. "I remember you. I've seen you around Satsuki's apartment before. We met once but I was invisible all the other times so you didn't see me... Also, it's not too late to get Miss White a present. I bet you could find her something really nice." A long pause. "Umm... Would you like some sake?"
no subject
"Sake, huh?" She zipped over to inspect the bottle, perching on a stool next to the island. She picks it up to examine it, noting the weathered paper seals. "Satsuki-chan always has such old-person's taste, doesn't she~
"That's okay, though, obviously I need to go buy Satsuki a gift! Remember that vomiting all over the floor is unladylike, so make sure to moderate!!"
no subject
Satsuki-chan always has such old-person's taste, doesn't she~
The young lady's brow twitched. She felt heat rise to her cheeks. "In a world like this, holding onto culture is as important as ever for the japanese." Old fashioned she says. Why she oughta- "So you plan to make a purchase, do you. Might I be so bold as to suggest what would particularly interest me?"
no subject
She placed it down near Nui. "Here. The bottle you're holding is the one for humans. It's magic too. It will refill itself if left alone and corked. It takes awhile though so pour slowly."
Satsuki's tension was starting to rub off on Koishi, the little youkai shifting a bit nervously. "Umm... A lot of things interest you Miss White." She was trying to be helpful. Really.
After a moment her eyes lit up a bit, her third eye swaying gently. It was slightly open. "I could... go out with the pink Miss in a bit. We could find something for you." She wasn't sure why Satsuki was so tense around Nui, but she'd go out shopping with the blonde monster if it meant Satsuki would get a chance to relax.
no subject
She looked at the bottle in her hands when Koishi explained it. "Refills itself huh! Economical!" She put it down. "Maybe later though~
"But in speaking of economics, I suppose I'll need some cash to get Satsuki's present. Where do you keep your red papers, Satsuki-chan?"
She sped off to Satsuki's room to ransack it.
no subject
She'll be back.. Right? Don't make her go up there. Satsuki raises a hand to her forehead and sighs. "I keep them on myself," she mutters to herself. After a few seconds her gaze shifts toward Koishi. "I appreciate the offer, but she does not possess any money, Komeiji. And while it is true I have many interests, there is one thing in particular I would really like."
Beat.
"Though my desires are by no means to be compared to your own gifts."
no subject
She let her gaze drift back over to Satsuki, feet swinging a little, eye still open somewhat. She was very alert. "You know, you'd be a whole lot easier to buy for if you made a list of what you wanted." Wait, was Koishi teasing her? Yes. Yes she was. "Then again, half the fun of getting gifts is being given things you didn't know you wanted."
She finished the dish, reaching almost reflexively toward the larger sake container. She nearly picked it up, but stopped short, placing her dish down next to it instead. She would drink more later.
"I suppose I could give her some money if there's something you really want Miss White. I don't really spend it on anything and I feel like you give me so much." She did at least know how money worked. "Besides, humans eat cake on birthdays, right? I should pick one up. I had this thing called a cheese-cake or something once. It was wonderful."
no subject
Nui appeared again on the floor. "What's with the lock, nee-chan? Don't trust me?"
She'd thought about breaking it open, but she was actually really curious about what Satsuki meant. She jumped up on the stool again and poured herself some saki from the smaller bottle and lifted it to her lips to taste.
"So what is it you want, huh?"
no subject
"That is true. But receiving personal gifts is something that I have avoided ever since I was little. It is a difficult habit to break from. On the other hand, you have been in my office often enough to get an idea?"
Perhaps at home she's taken it for granted, but Satsuki has been growing increasingly clingy toward anything resembling traditional Japanese culture. As for her hobbies she is rather secretive about that though maybe Koishi noticed that Satsuki doesn't draw shodo anymore.
"Anyhow that will not be necessary.. But I appreciate the offer. You have done enough for me as is. However I would be happy to recommend other causes you could use your red bills toward." that said before Nui returns. Thankfully not with a door worn on her wrist like a bracelet, but she's still shot a dark glare. Which she immediately feels stupid for, by the way. The young lady raises a hand to her forehead a moment, and tries to shake it off. "I have monsters in the apartment." she then answers to Nui, probably referring to her pokemon.
No she isn't.
"What I have always desired, is for you to gain employment."

Srry this is late in coming
Koishi just sat and listened for a time, looking from Nui, to Satsuki, and back. A job? Huh... She blinked. Well it wasn't really something she thought about much. What she did for Satsuki was a job, right? But it wasn't unpleasant like the name implies. And if Satsuki was getting paid like her sister there was no way she was short on money especially with how strict she was in all other areas.
"It's not because Miss White doesn't have enough money. It's so you can have more money. Right, Miss White?" A smile. "If you had more money you could go out and do things you wanted to do and buy things you wanted to buy."
"You should find something you have fun doing. Then you can go out and have a good time and then buy the things you want."
Welcome!
That aside, once Koishi speaks, she nods in agreement. "Mostly correct. We are not in the similar situation as we are at home; I do not own this establishment so I must pay every month to stay here. You will need to do the same."
That's all she can really comment on as she actually doesn't have a firm grasp on if Nui needs money for her other interests. Whatever those may be.
no subject
The rules didn't work here like they did back home? Well that was good news to Nui, for reasons Satsuki perhaps didn't yet comprehend. "Okie-dokie!"
She hopped off the stool. "I guess I better start job hunting then, huh?? Toodles~!"
She skipped out the door.
