So... I've been looking into a few things and, well... what I found wasn't good. I heard about those murders in Attleton, and since I'm not much of a fighter I started asking around and talked to some of the people that saw what had happened...

[She holds up a piece of paper depicting a magical circle with archaic runes in the outer circle. In the middle of the circle was a pentagram. It was a simple design, yet somehow carried with it a certain air of dread.]

People say they saw this mark painted in the blood of the victims, and I'm afraid I'm not the only person from my world here. That's the seal of Diablo. Diablo is a demon lord of immense power, one of the seven Lords of Hell, and one of the three Prime Evils. He has a history of imbuing those that follow him with immense power, so it is possible that one of his cultists have come to this place and has not revealed himself. That's the best-case scenario. Worst case is that The Lord of Terror walks this plane of existence.

Just, if anyone sees this seal, be prepared for a fight... and fight for your lives because your life will depend on it...

Not really. He's been battling the angels of the High Heavens for an eternity now, and he's gotten really good at fighting. The only ones in my world that could stand up to the Prime Evils in straight battle were the Nephelem; humans with nearly godlike power, and even they struggled.

Even if he were to sustain enough damage to destroy his physical body, his soul would retreat into his soul stone where he would remain, and from where he could silently spread his influence until a new host presented itself...

"A host, eh? Perhaps an exorcism, then. Good thing we've several 'gods' on retainer for just such an occasion. Are these Nephilim's powers owed to blood? Offspring of the sons of god and man?"

No, the only way to remove one of the Lords of Hell from a host body is to kill the body. Once they take root, they completely override the will and mind of the host. Even one of the Horradrim's most powerful mages - Tal Rasha - was unable to keep Diablo's brother Baal at bay on his own.

The Nephelem were the first humans; the sons and daughters of angels and demons. Over time, humanity became less powerful for some reason. Uncle Deckard said it was something to do with the Worldstone suppressing Nephelem power, but... nobody knows for sure.

It doesn't surprise me that a magician contracts with devils. Bad habit of theirs.

Oh, right you told me. Strange how that race, of all things, crossed over into another universe, though the meaning's fudged a little. Ah well, I guess the rest of us will have to find some other road to godlike powers aside from great breeding.

Pity about the host; you're sure? Has an exorcism ever been tried?

Tal Rasha did not contract with Baal. He turned his body into a prison, burying the demons soulstone within his own flesh and gave his brethren time to seal his body deep beneath the Earth.

Yes, it has been tried. For centuries, Tal Rasha's disciples searched for a way to free him of Baal's influence, but none were successful, and in the end, Diablo was able to destroy the restraints on Tal Rasha's body, giving the Lord of Destruction full reign over Tal Rasha; mind, body, and soul.

[A lord of terror with immense power? This looks like a job for a dragon! But more seriously...]

That sounds horrible. I'm curious, how well do you think this...Diablo's power would compare with that of a dragon?

There are no dragons in Sanctuary... but it is said that even the ancient human Nephalem that were revered as gods for their power could barely stand before the Prime Evils.

[She'll just take this to mean that this demon lord's power rivals the elemental deities of Sornieth. So he would be no one to take on alone. Azalea would feel much more confident fighting with her clan.]

All right. I know we have quite a few powerful people in this world, so it would take a team effort to defeat him.

Yes, Diablo and even his minions are not a foe one can defeat in single combat.

Hmm...did Diablo have any weaknesses? Or even an element?

[It would help determine what would be most effective.]

He favors fire and lightning in battle, but I don't know of any weaknesses. I've never actually... faced him in battle. My uncle traveled with some heroes that fought him, but he didn't like talking about it. Can't blame him really... few march into Hell and come out unchanged...

This Diablo guy sounds really delightful for a Lord of Hell. Though that is not even close to a God, unless that is a god in your dimension.

Even the gods of Sanctuary were not able to rival the power of Diablo and the Prime Evils.

Sounds like he's a blast then and very powerful.

He is fear itself. The only ones that need not fear him are his minions and the Nephelem.

Yeah. You know I get a sick kick out of fear. Well at least others fear because you know what honey, I ain't got nothing to worry about. I enjoy fear.

[She had been monitoring com chatter for any sign of her true enemy. But her interest was caught the moment she heard "blood of the victims." While she would happily see her enemies as nothing but a huge bloodstain on the wall, she'd rather not let innocent people suffer the same.]

"What do you know about the victims themselves?"

Only that their ends were slow, painful, and gruesome. Other than that, nothing I'm afraid. Diablo feeds on the terror generated as he tortures them to death. He would not allow his minions even to grant swift deaths to civilians.

[She was quiet for awhile. This Diablo may be a bigger plague than the Medicis. Eventually, she decided to keep to her prior engagements. Should she encounter this Diablo person, then she'll let the bones fall where they may.]

"Hmm..."

[That was simply all as she shut off the feed.]

Yes, it is a... concerning trend. I fully intend to deal with this as soon as I am able.

Not... exactly, but Sanctuary is inexorably linked to Heaven and Hell. It was created as a refuge for demons and angels alike who grew tired of the Eternal Conflict.

I do. As for information... all I know is what Uncle Deckard told me. Diablo is the physical manifestation of all terror. He feeds on fear, and can see into a person's very soul and knows exactly what terrifies them. In terms of raw power, he's only second to his brother, Baal, the Lord of Destruction... but what Diablo lacks in brute force, he makes up with in cunning.

[Okay, Midboss was normally good at staying calm and composed ~~except when people called him Midboss~~ - or at the very least, was not easily taken by surprised, but he practically choked on his own saliva when he heard the words 'second to his brother, Baal'.]

[Right, no, calm down, just because Baal had a brother that was no reason to believe he would cause as much of a problem.

I see...I see, demon of fear...So this is an intimidation game, I would imagine.

That would be very likely, yes. Unlike his siblings - save for maybe Mephisto - Diablo is a very patient demon. There have been times where he waited for centuries for plans to converge, slowly spreading his influence as he waited.

[Her surprise didn't seem unusual to him. That had been a rather odd reaction.

Still, for now, he locked the video. The last thing he wanted was Diablo himself tracking down the posts reading up on all this. If only he knew.]

That shouldn't surprise me...well, there is only so much he can do in a place like this. I'll have to see if I can't trace this problem to the source. Either these clues are a distraction, or he's laying a trap. That or - as you said - he is trying to spread his influence here.

If you go looking for him just be warned... you won't find him. He'll find you.

[As the Goddess of Death, she's naturally curious about this one. Still, when she answers, she's posing as an androgynous human.]

A 'Lord of Hell'?

One of seven, yes. The Prime Evils are he strongest. Mephisto, Lord of Hatred, Baal, Lord of Destruction, and Diablo, Lord of Terror. They reigned over the Burning Hells until the Lesser Evils united and overthrew them, beginning the Dark Exile... though Uncle Deckard had a theory that the exile itself was one of Mephisto's machinations in an attempt to corrupt humanity to the Hells' side of the Eternal Conflict.

I wonder, did they ever succeed in corrupting humanity? I get the feeling they're a bit tougher to crack than some might think.

[She shrugged, listening.]

You know, if this Diablo's been leaving his symbols around like that, I'm sure he wants to get noticed. Makes you wonder what big play he's preparing for, or if he's just watching to see how everyone reacts.

There have been thousands to willingly give themselves to the Prime Evils over the centuries. Upon its discovery, the Angiris Council forbade any angels from directly influencing the lives of mortals... the demons had no such restrictions. Some would give themselves to the demons for power, riches, or glory... others would contract with them in order to protect others. Only the Archangel Tyreal, Archangel of Justice, dared to defy the Angiris council and gave humans tools to combat the demons.

[Leah nods a bit.]

It's likely a bit of both. He feeds on fear, so he creates uncertainty and gains strength from those who fear what he might eventually do.

That seems a little unbalanced, but it rings true with a lot of legends I hear about. Once power is sealed whilst the other runs rampant... I wonder why it's so common?

It puts him in an interesting position, doesn't it? If he's feeding on dread and anticipation, then he cannot act without breaking that.

[For some reason, Izanami didn't seem intimidated by this 'Lord of Terror'. Frankly, she had no intention of engaging him just yet, and second of all, she considered herself capable of combating most people in Genessia if she really needed to.]

Perhaps it's arrogance on the part of the angels. After all, the Angiris council once voted on wiping out Sanctuary wholesale, and our world survived by one vote. Tyreal's.

Dread, yes. Anticipation is something easily replaced. He can pull the deepest fears of a mortal out of their mind and into the physical realm, all while making more reasons for people to fear him.

It seems to be a month of terrorism, doesn't it?

...I hate to say it, but it actually makes me feel more at home. Sanctuary is constantly under attack. If not from demons, then the nations of Sanctuary find ample reason to fight amongst themselves.

Genessia is a bit of a second life for me, as well.
