Frankly, because I caused you a great inconvenience, and I wanted to repay your kindness.

[He didn't see any harm in being honest, at least not yet.]

[Kahlan relaxes some after hearing that. She's isn't interested in a date having one man who's already so skillfully secured her heart. Being on the end of his kindness is something that she's far more comfortable with.]

You don't have to worry about that but thank you.

[She smiles.]

I'm honored to receive your kindness.

I at least owe you a meal equivalent to the cost of the clothes. [He smiles.] I did tell you I'd pay you pack, after all.

[Kahlan smiles at him.]

You did. Thank you Balthier.

[Without argument or further questions she follows him through the archway from Fayren to Genessia and then towards Nova City. She's curious about where they are going and she wonders silently if her state of dress will be appropriate. From what she knows of Nova City it's nothing like Fayren, in both culture and style.]

[Balthier has done a good job of acclimating himself to the style of Nova City, but there are enough visitors from other worlds to facilitate Kahlan's style of dress. He walks confidently, and with the air of nobility, and doesn't quicken his own step to speed her along.]

No thanks is necessary. It is right. [He smiles.] Besides, the proceeds when to a worthy cause, after all.

[Kahlan walks with a calm airy and grace that suggests she's used to being placed above others. Her chin remains held up while her eyes glance around without judgement or disdain but curiousity. She's been to this city a few times but not enough to know it well.

She glances over at Blathier, her arms relaxed at her sides as she walks.]

[The cause is the only reason that Kahlan hadn't been disgusted with the practice. She doesn't believe that people should be bought and paid for.]

Since we are to spend the evening together why don't you tell me more about you? [He isn't common, that much she knows.]

[He raised an eyebrow, a slow smirk teasing the corners of his mouth.]

About me? Well, would you think less of me if I told you I was a pirate and a scoundrel?

[Kahlan thinks about it for a moment, perhaps longer than is necessary, and then flashes Balthier a smile.]

I'll reserve the judgement of your character for later.

[He looks a bit impressed and her response may not have been completely expected.]

Well, then, I'll be sure to earn your respect before dashing it to pieces. [He smiles at his own joke.]

[Kahlan laughs softly. She's never felt troubled around a single man, she's capable of taking care of herself however those here don't know of her powers or position. It's nice to be able to speak with someone as friends.

Richard's the only one who's given her that kindness before and its something she's adjusting too while she's here.]

You have such low expectations of yourself?

[She teases lightly letting her gaze move slowly around the city.]

[At that, Balthier laughs.] Certainly not, but I am accustomed to be judged by my reputation alone.

It's my job to judge based on truth which is often very different than reputation.

[At least from her experiences.]

[She's trying to remember the city to see if their dinning place is somewhere she's passed before.]

Your job? [That was the first he'd heard of such a thing.] And what is that?

[He nods at her question, though.]

[He doesn't have to know what that really means for her to use the term.] My duty is to the people. To find truths in matters and make a decision regarding them. It isn't the sort of thing I have been able to do here.

[Law works very differently in Genessia.]

[The sky pirate falls quiet for a moment, looking thoughtful. She hadn't told him much about this "Confessor", but it sounded very familiar.

In the Empire of Archades, on my homeworld of Ivalice, there are a group of men and women dedicated to the truth. [They had been, once upon a time. He'd thought they were when he'd agreed to join.] They call themselves Judges. It sounds similar.

[There's no need for her to know his connection to the establishment, though she can probably tell he's not saying something.]

[Kahlan raises an eyebrow at him as they walk, her expression thoughtful before she speaks.]

It doesn’t sound as if you have a fond opinion of them.

[She’s used to people not liking her or fearing her however that had been due to her powers not because of her station within the law. Generally people where happy to see her should a domestic or despite arise that would otherwise go unsolved.]

[He shook his head as they continued on.] I have a very high opinion of what they were meant to stand for. I have a very low opinion of what they became.

Ah.

[Her tone suggests understand.]

Power often corrupts those who wield it.

[She has intimate experiance with that.]

[He nods.] Indeed. Even more so when those who give the orders give them free rein.

[Her brows furrow.]

Those in that position should realize that they serve the people, not the other way around.

[Her tone is even, this is something she feels very passionate about. For a moment she's even forgotten that they are on a date.]

Yes, I'm glad we've gotten that squared away.

[He looks to her evenly.]

With any luck, Archades will have itself straightened out within a fortnight.

[The corner of her lips curl up into a smile.]

The Arcadian empire has been sailing high in the skies of Ivalice without me for six years now.

[He smiles.]

I believe she'll survive a little longer.

[Kahlan matches his smile before shaking her head.]

You must have a lot of trust in your friends.

[At least from what she's surmised.]

[He shrugs slightly.]

I suppose so. They haven't failed me yet, at least.
