[Genessia City Hospital, evening. There's a well-built man in his late thirties sitting on the edge of a bed, rubbing his temples to help his world swim back into focus. He lets out a rueful chuckle before turning to his device.]

As far as 'surprise, you've been kidnapped' holograms go, that one was really helpful. But it really needs to warn you about pushing the city limits.

[He gives the world beyond his window the briefest of looks... including the moon in the night sky. He seems to draw strength from this before going on.]

So: hello, Genessia. Name's Marc Spector. Ex-mercenary, current... well, I've been all kinds of things. Anybody know what's really going on here? Aliens? Prison experiment? Or am I dead and you're all part of some really weird afterlife?

[A soft snort and a thoughtful aside at that last one, almost a whisper. Listen closely enough and you might hear it.]

...wouldn't be the first time.

[She couldn't think of anything better to be, besides a reaper.]

I'm quite sure you're not DEAD, but I wish I knew what was going on, myself. From what I've heard, it's rather dull at times here.

[He shakes his head, bit of a grin tugging at his lips. No need to take that seriously, of course.]

Then what do you do for excitement?

[She hums softly before shrugging.]

Seeing as I'm a new arrival, I haven't found much just yet. Maybe tinkering with a few items I scrounged up for a project for starters.

[His soft chuckle disguises the weird little vibes he just got. Something about her emphasis on those particular words. He pushes it aside for now.]

Guess there's an artist in every jail.

[Shrugs and looks out the window again.]

Well, I'll take the quiet life any day. There's only so much merc work you can do before you have an epiphany. S'why I left.

We are only prisoners if we allow ourselves to be.

[He seems like an old soul that's seen a lot. Grell tilts her head a bit.]

I wonder if I'll ever have that epiphany.

[Not that old. But old enough.]

You a gun for hire yourself?

[She only nods and grins sharply.]

Hopefully business here will pick up. I need a shopping spree.

[And what a grin. It's the kind he's intimately familiar with. She may have just landed on his radar.]

Hope you're picky with the vendors.

[An emphasis subtly mirroring hers, yes.]

[A soft chuckle before she replies.]

I hope to get a good bargain on a new pair of shoes.

[Oh, she was aware he wasn't talking about the shoe stores.]

[And he's aware that she's aware. Oh, the chills.]

Now that you're retired, what do you do for entertainment, hmm~?

[Her question is both playfully feline and insidiously reptilian. If she only knew.]

Nothing permanent, I'll give you that. I was an investor for awhile. Then a fine arts collector. Then a CEO. Even a TV producer. Guess I'm still working on it.

Are you always so indecisive?

[A man of many faces. Certainly not one to be trusted too easily.]

You may have to work on it soon. They may not be too kind to slackers.

[Here's a face that's clearly not human, but she looks innocent enough.]

We're still trying to find out what's really going on. But I do know that this isn't an afterlife.

[A non-committal shrug with a hint of good humor.]

Too much money, too little opportunities outside the battlefield. You should try it sometime.

[The nice thing about being for hire: the free time she'll have to spend all that hard earned money.

She raises an eyebrow at him.]

I can't why there wouldn't be any. [Herself, included.] Not all of us are from the same world, you see.

Not the afterlife, not a prison experiment. Aliens..the jury is still out on that one.

[Outside of an arched eyebrow, he's taking a dragon's presence in remarkable stride. Why's that?]

That's one worry down. Because if I were really dead, I'm not sure I'd make it back this time.

[He runs a hand through his hair, almost completely focused now.]

...I really hope it isn't aliens. The fallout is always hell, especially in New York.

[Aw hell, no. You can see it in the way he looks at the screen]

Someone's idea of a joke.

[She wasn't trying to be funny, she sometimes wonders this exact thing.]

That honestly wouldn't surprise me. Though it's a little too early-- and elaborate-- for April Fool's.

[His wry grin and shake of the head show he's not taking that notion seriously... maybe. It happens.]

We will make it back somehow. No one knows how or when...but we will.

I hope so. The hologram said this place may be "safer than your homeworld." I'd hate to be proven wrong and buy the farm here.

[Beat.]

Have people died in Genessia?

[She figured that was why they were at the hospital instead of just outside the Bay, but she had never heard of anyone trying before.]
