Cannons are not precise, and generally shouldn't be used if you need to aim them. They're meant for extremely heavy damage, like city walls, ships, or mountainsides. I can't think of any practical reason you would need a cannon here. And you need to load guns, and even cannons, with smaller balls. Like firework tubes. Balls & bullets use torque to aim properly, which would not work without centripetal force -- roundness.
And yes, gun fanatics are as loony as sword fanatics, so there are guns for just about any occasion imaginable.
If you want to get extremely fancy, you could make a 4-tier gun with multiple bullet chambers, one for each element. You'd need to find a way to keep it from overheating in the ignition chamber, but it would be... the closest you could get to a cannon of derringers. I think.
