[it's night. Going on 12. Ace has been gone for about a week in the dungeons going deeper and deeper until he thought he would suffocate.
But even he can't stand the loneliness for that long. He'll stuff an envelop of money under Marco's door when he's sure the phoenix isn't there and then hurry on, wandering aimlessly through the streets, through one city then another.
There's a lot weighing on his mind but feel free to address him.]
Locked to Smoker:
[at 2 am he'll come into Smoker's room again. Quiet but not sneakng. Because screw everything, honestly]

... It's really hard not to think about what's already happened when he points it all out like that though. It's not like she hasn't thought about it... She's probably thought about it too often, honestly.
It's better if he doesn't know, though -- there's a reason he doesn't know. ]
I doubt someone could make it so I cannot use my magic. And you did not answer me.
no subject
You doubt that?! You doubt it?! Don't be so stupid! Even the strongest Devil Fruit user can be stopped right in their damn tracks! There's always going to be something out there that's going to be able to kill you so don't be so fucking naive!
no subject
She knows. She knows all of it. That she can be stopped, that her magic doesn't make her invincible, that she can die.
Unfortunately, whether it's because she's tired or everything just wearing on her by this point, she feels something beginning to break and, at that moment, starts to lose control over it. ]
I know, Ace! I know that no one is invincible, I would have to be the world's greatest fool to not know that by now! Literally anything in the world can end it, whether it is at the hands of some blaggard or caused by a freak accident! But hiding from the world and not doing what I wish because things become a little dangerous is not living, it is being ruled by fear and I refuse to do that!
And you ignored my question again, I refuse to believe you did not hear me!
no subject
Though even what she says it's true and he can't deny that it's better to live than to be afraid he still doesn't want her to die, damnit. He still doesn't want her to be out here by herself. Everything feels like it's going to die at any moment and the world will collapse in on itself like a badly made tent
but he can't say that. He can't justify it.
He'll just have to keep an eye on her]
No! I don't want to talk! I don't want to talk to you or anyone! So just shut the hell up already!
no subject
[ She'd smack him if he was closer, but as it is she sighs hard and rubs her temples. Never easy to deal with...
...
She knows there's reason for Ace to worry, and it frustrates her that there is a reason that he's not fully aware of and she's hiding that from him. Maybe it's selfish, even if she's telling herself it's for his sake...
When Adela speaks again, it's softer, because no she doesn't want to fight with him or argue. ]
Stay with me a while? I can at least admit if something does come along, we stand a better chance together.
no subject
[he'll put his hat on her head because he doesn't want to see her looking and can't say the words he feels other than that gesture so deal with it and then crouches by her wheelchair, hands on his knees]
The hell is wrong with you anyway.
[though muttered to himself]
no subject
[ Maybe that kind of familiar banter will help. She wants to meet his eye, but it's hard when he won't look at her.
She'll put the brakes on so she won't roll away or something, then shift so she can make herself a bit more comfortable. ]
no subject
[he runs his fingernail over the spokes in her wheelchair to listen to the noise. And after a while, feeling a little calmer:]
What have you been up to?
no subject
[ No details for Ace, she doesn't need him feeling sorry for her after all that. But, it also leaves her without much to say - not if she doesn't want to end up bringing up whatever is bothering Ace again. ]
I have been trying to get out more, if only because I likely will go mad if I just work all of the time.
no subject
no subject
[ Big sigh. Okay fine, she'll try to keep it simple. ]
It is impossible because I need to have a steady hand and it is a delicate procedure. However... Connecting the port to all of the nerves in my leg is going to cause immense pain - one that even the toughest people could not hope to even remain conscious through. Even if I could remain awake, I likely could not do it successfully.
[ Froooooooooown. ]
I am turning my efforts elsewhere. Miss Winry is not here to do it, so... I will have to find a doctor willing to learn and perform the surgery. It will take a long time, but it is at least something.
no subject
If you can't manage, you can always get a peg leg. Or you could learn to air walk with your stump.
[he's heard of that happening but he's never seen it]
no subject
[ In spite of herself she chuckles. ]
... A peg would be much simpler, but I have never been one to give up on my ambitions so easily. Just because I cannot do it myself... It can still be done, I just have to wait until someone else needs a false limb in order to do it myself.
no subject
It wouldn't be hopping either. It's air walking. Like... running in mid-air. I'm not sure how people do it. Maybe Marco knows.
[he rests his chin on the arm of the wheelchair]
Maybe you should use a peg anyway, just to practice. Make it the same weight that the other would be. That way you get used to walking with a different balance.
no subject
[ She'll take the opportunity to just cram Ace's hat back onto his head, thank you. She might be feeling just a little cheeky. ]
As it was your idea I expect you to be there if I end up falling because of it.
no subject
no subject
[ She's... 90% sure Ace is joking, and she's used to burns, but...
...
Well, that part of the story is still accurate as far as he's concerned. ]
I have enough burns as it is.
no subject
[he won't burn her burn her but he'll definitely challenge her.
He rests his cheek on the armrest and smiles up at her.
But then his stomach growls]
Want to go get something, Red?
no subject
[ She won't say it... But it really seems like Ace has cheered up at least a little. Maybe she'll find out what's bothered him another time, but it's not important now. ]
I am sure I can wait a little longer to go back.
no subject
Come on.
[not that she has much of a choice because he has her wheelchair again and is walking her through the night.
And then because he is in a slightly better mood]
Wanna run?
no subject
... All right.
no subject
Then he gets an idea and jams one foot in the back of the seat, avoiding her as best he can while pushing back with the other as the get up a good head of speed because there's a slope here and]
WOOO!
[down they go it! Tearing through the dark. Ace gets his other foot up as well though leans out over the wheelchair to distribute his weight so they won't go sliding back]
no subject
[ EEK. She might have a death grip on the chair now, leaning back into it (and consequently against Ace) as she tries not to completely lose it. She wants to hit the breaks, she wants to stop this, but it's a little hard to think straight when the panic button has been hit.
ACE WHY!! ]
no subject
And a convenient lantern shows that there's a curve up ahead]
Lean right! [and he'll lean left and maybe they can take it without falling over]
no subject
Chances of wipe out? Ridiculously high. Are they going to make it regardless? ]
