11th Book | Text/Action

I feel like one must ask. For those who practice the sword in there spare time, what is the best way to learn? I did once have a teacher for a short while before they left and since then I've been practicing along with reading books now and again, but I feel like that just isn't enough.

Action: Fayren - Woods edge
[Belle had been lugging around various training dummies to practice with. In all her training it had been the one thing she had yet to do. She paused as she took a step back, looking at what she had done so far and watched the lifeless dummies simply flop over.]

This won't do. I feel like if they moved it would prove more beneficial, but how to do that is another matter.

[For now she simply pushes them to the side and puts them up against a tree. It would have to do for now anyway.]

Action: Genessia Library
[When she wasn't training Belle was at work and during one day at work, she was found to be lugging what appeared to be a giant axe. It was heavy she she knew this considering where she got it from, but she had wanted to see if there was anything about the thing in any of the books. But it was sure taking a while to do such a thing.]

You're... gonna fall over.

[Terrance has been doing some research which, for him, is easy. He reads a book and then retains its knowledge. This library is different than any other he's been in so he's taking his time combing through the aisle when he spots Belle.

His hair is mess and his backpack looks like it's seen better days. He looks like a mess though his dark eyes are bright and alert.]

I'm a quick study.

[He replies as if this explains everything. His eyes go to the ax and his gaze turns quizzitive. He quickly listes equations in his head, assuming a specific gravity of 7.20.]

That looks to be anywhere between 75 and 200 lbs. [He's keeping his margin of error wide.] An average untrained woman can lift about 74 lbs max and that's in extreme cases. So what about you isn't average?

[A trained woman can lift about 142 lbs and that doesn't factor in moving the object. Terrance's mind quickly goes through the equation as he turns to stare at the girl. It doesn't make sense and that alone annoys him. The point of physics is that it doesn't change but then the gravity and forces in this world might be different. Things might be lighter or heavier depending that gravitational force downward. He's always assumed that cartoons were like that, having a lighter gravitation so that people can blast off into the distance.

Terrance by nature is an academic and if things can be explained in those terms its easier for him to understand.]

You realize that your sentence has a double negative and you said the same thing twice. You're also contradicting yourself since an average girl cannot lift something of that size. So clearly you're unusual.

[He doesn't understand why she's ignoring a fact that's directly in front of her. He questions her intelligence or her observational skills.]

[He doesn't see any indication that it's been dragged but then maybe she's just very careful. He lifts his shoulders in a shrug and turns to leave.

His line of inquiry is finished and he has nothing else to say to her. So far he's classified everyone he's met here as boring or stupid, neither of which are traits he enjoys.]

You cannot learn swords from a book. There's too many sword types and techniques for me to adequately help you, but check with the local gyms and dojos, someone probably offers classes.

Otherwise, assuming you want to learn defense, I can help you learn jitte, which is a defensive weapon for use to block swords.

I was blessed enough to learn from one of some renown. I wouldn't recommend it for yourself, if you're an average human woman. 'Live by the sword, die by the sword', and there are better ways to die.

Heh, better ways to live, too. Well, if you're very interested in turning life to death, might I recommend a personal firearm? They're very novel, but much easier to learn, and ought to make short work of most swordsmen.

A book may techniques, but it will not make you a swordsman. A book cannot give you the instincts required.

There is always room for growth, even for those who have trained for years.

My father was the weapon's master of my house. He taught me much.

You should be practicing the basics at least once a day before you move onto more complex techniques so you can rely on muscle memory. Preferably with another person.

If you don't, you won't know what you're doing, and if you're planning to use that in a fight, you could find that out at a bad time.

You're probably ready for more advanced stuff now. Another person will also be anticipating your actions and trying to fight back at you.

Is there a certain kind of sword you like the best?

I'm already training, but maybe I could train with you sometimes. You probably know more about swordplay, but at least you'd have someone to fight off.

Maybe swords aren't right for you, and a different weapon would work. But you're right about trying.

I won't go near Fayren. Anywhere else is fine.

[Their feelings about what happened are probably different and he won't assume when people have been doing that and he's lost his temper because of it. But her words do hit close to home. He hasn't felt remotely comfortable with his usual weapons type and shield.]

Then focus on close combat. Maybe a sword with more precision would work but you can figure that out as you go.

[Gold had been curious when he'd first spotted Belle with the dummies, but considering her recent text; he had an idea just what she might be doing with them. It was child's play really to follow her and wait for the right moment before revealing himself by stepping out from behind one of the trees not too far from the one the dummies rested against.

He held a cane that looked similar to his usual one in one hand, though in reality it wasn't anything akin to it save perhaps in looks, given that it hid a blade within the wooden base of it.]

How about someone living to spar against instead? I could give you a few pointers as we practice if you like.

[The smile was returned by a small smile of his own. He hadn't known just what sort of reception his surprise appearance might receive, but he was grateful it was a pleasant reception.]

Do you have a second wooden sword or shall I improvise?

[He could conjure a wooden practice sword if need be or use his cane. The latter was strong enough to serve the such a purpose well enough.]

You can show me what you know and we can go from there.

[personal profile] magicsprice 2016-08-06 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)
[He gives a nod of acknowledgement at the answer. Understandable really.]

Improvising it is then.

[The cane is tossed up slightly so he can grab it beneath the golden head, holding onto the wooden shaft beneath it and then holding it out horizontally as if it were a rapier instead of a cane.]

Up for showing me what you've learned so far?
