02. Wider exploration [Action]
In and around Nova City
NCI. Aster Technolgies
For all he's the muscle of the Turks, Rude's always had a soft spot for technology and in particular the inner workings of technology. Granted that most of that interest has been fielded via explosives and the kinds of devices he can't very well speak about without raising a few suspicions.
But the interest lingers, and working in the most technologically advanced part of Genessia is only fuelling that interest. Which is why he finds himself at Aster Technologies, curious to see the sorts of things they're offering, the progress and advancements made to what he's familiar with. He's not really looking to buy, though even he's not entirely able to avoid eager salespeople determined to make sure he leaves with fewer bills than he arrived with. For the most part, he'll dismiss them with a simple grunt and shake of his head, though on occasion he'll ask the odd question that won't result in a sale but he can't help but ask all the same.
He doesn't let it show too obviously. But there's an intensity to how he looks at things that betrays just how passionate he is about these things.
NCII. Scrapyard
Looking is all well and good but it's given Rude that certain itch to create for himself. To try to understand the technologies around him, and where better place to start than with what other people don't want? Even if he won't be able to fully appreciate all of what's there, it never hurts to know what he can figure out with what he does recognise and he never will understand newer components if he doesn't take them apart whether they're salvageable or not.
He's aware he probably stands out, from the moment he steps foot into the yard to the moment he leaves with a box full of whatever's caught his interest. Probably not many people visit a scrapyard in a meticulous suit and tie, but Rude very rarely dresses down these days and especially with Rufus around, it feels important to him to keep that Turk mentality about him at all times.
NCIII. After Life
For all it's rather brighter than most of the dive bars Rude has frequented in his time, After Life has become something of a regular haunt for Rude. Now he works in Nova City, it's a convenient place for him to wind down when his shift ends, sometimes with a certain redhead for company but just as frequently alone. It isn't lost on him that this is where many of the shadier types tend to congregate but that's partly why he likes it - whatever else he is here, he's spent too many years as a Turk to consider himself as anything better than morally flexible.
Besides. He's come to find there can be useful information to glean on occasion. He'll even strike up conversation, such as it ever is with him, in order to do so - though always with something innocuous about the venue or the city, apparent small talk that he wouldn't normally bother with save to glean anything warranting closer investigation.
Shady a place as it is, however, Rude does what he can to remain a somewhat-upstanding patron. He's civil, polite to the staff and while he enjoys some of the more risque shows put on - he is only human, after all - he does so respectfully even if he's as quiet as he always is. And while he won't step on anyone's toes in taking someone's job from them, if he notices trouble brewing and security a little too far away, he'll quietly position himself so as to be able to intervene, to break up unpleasant and inappropriate situations before they can start to escalate.
He's no hero. But it doesn't hurt to have the staff of a place he frequents as regularly as he intends to here on-side.
In and around Genessia City
GCI. Training Regime: Firing Range and Thud's Gym
Now he has a steadier income, Rude has wasted little time in establishing his new training regime. Security for Stark Mechanics might not be quite the daily threat to his life as being a Turk had been back home but he won't allow himself to get sloppy, in any aspect of his training.
He might not seem the type to favour firearms and in truth, he usually doesn't. But being able to strike from afar has its benefits and that he doesn't tend to use guns in most of his fights means, to him, he has to be all the more careful that he doesn't let himself get rusty.
He's not a bad shot, for anyone who sees him in action. He's also very particular about weapon safety, to the point where if he sees someone holding their gun in a less than safe manner, or otherwise disregarding standard safety procedure, he'll step in with a quiet, firm correction - though with an odd gentleness to it, where he deems it to be inexperience rather than wilful ignorance or stupidity. It's been a long time since he's had to train anyone but the instinct apparently never quite left him.
He's also taken to preferring Thud's gym over the more technologically-advanced options in Nova City. Holodecks serve a purpose and he doesn't shun them completely, but there's something more honest and easier to discern in using real equipment, a certain building trust in knowing how each piece of equipment works and a more direct control. Weights are his main focus, when he's training, though he's also careful to balance his routine to ensure overall fitness as well as keeping his muscles in peak condition.
In training, he tends to become focused to the point where he barely notices the rest of the world around him. So it's perhaps reasonable to find he likes to take the time, when he can, to relax in the sauna or the jacuzzi. The sauna is also perhaps the only time most people will see that his glasses aren't actually surgically attached to his head; the steam provides enough of a mask and that's enough for him to mostly relax. He still has them in the jacuzzi, though, as well as throughout his workouts. That said, the gym is also the one place people are likely to see him in something other than the suit.
GCII. Garden Park
Even above-Plate, there hadn't been a whole lot in Midgar that had been green space - and what had been there had been carefully contrived and often artificially encouraged. Beyond that, Rude had never much been in a position to stop and truly relax in such a space, when his work had been so much of his life to the point where he'd almost forgotten what having time to himself is.
Which is perhaps what draws him to the park in Genessia. It's a space in which he can relax, enjoy his surroundings and a little peace where so much of his time even here has become about keeping an eye on Reno and Rufus. It's a subtle thing and barely perceptible to most, but his posture here is just a little less rigid, his countenance just a little less stark in its inexpressiveness. This is where he comes when he needs to well and truly switch off for a little while, even if he's never so oblivious to his surroundings that he couldn't defend himself from anyone thinking his guard might be lowered.
((OOC: Brackets or prose equally welcome. Am happy to throw up more specific individual starters if needs be, just let me know roughly the what/where and I can put something together))

She sighs, blowing a few wayward strands of white from her face. The elf shakes her head, "No - well, that is not entirely true. I found many interesting things there, certainly, but none of particular use. 'Tis amazing to see a library so lacking in local history...and yet filled with the history of other realms."
no subject
Hard to think of that being anything other than what Rude's always known, but then nothing about having been brought here can really be considered to be normal to his mind.
Though she sighs, Rude doesn't seem at all surprised by her response. Indeed, his tone reflects that with what little inflection it gives. "I found the same. Makes me wonder what they don't want us knowing."
Not that he wants to seed paranoia in anyone else, but he can't help but find it suspicious.
no subject
But she doesn't find a need for any of it save for the occasional use of copper to buy a room for a night in a human, or perhaps dwarven inn back home. The concept that she will have to actually be paid for doing something that comes so naturally to her seems to baffle and confuse her — makes her uncomfortable if the way she shifts in her seat seems to be any indication.
The topic changes though, and though the topic isn't all that pleasant either, the elf seems more inclined to speak of it, "A great many things, I would imagine. But all secrets can be revealed in time, if one is patient and diligent enough. At the very least, I would like to know whom or what brought us to this realm, and for what purpose."
no subject
In the meantime, there are bigger mysteries at hand, ones he is more immediately concerned with as well. Though there's agreement in the sound he makes when she mentions all secrets being revealed in time, he decides against mentioning the third quality most needed in some instances - some secrets held a price that only those with more flexible morals would see fit to paying. He should know; it's been his job long enough to be morally flexible enough to know how to extract secrets.
"Can understand why they don't make that easy knowledge. Wouldn't want to make themselves targets." Which doesn't mean, as his tone hints towards, that he likes it even if he does understand.
no subject
"Targets?" of course the thought that people might actually be upset about being brought here unwillingly had crossed her mind, but she had hoped none would be aggressive enough to attack their captors. She really shouldn't hold people to such high standards, "Mm...I suppose that would make sense. But if they need our assistance, would that not be a risk they should be willing to take? There are plenty here willing to help, from what I have seen thus far."
no subject
And if they can't be told immediately, Rude can only assume it's because it's something those in charge need to sound people out for. Perhaps putting outsiders in charge of running the different cities is simply another test towards that plan, because beyond that Rude doesn't see that there's much that's needed.
Which leads him towards another, less savoury possibility.
"Assuming they want anything at all, beyond their own amusement."
no subject
...Rude saying things like that, probably doesn't help either.
"I cannot imagine watching others going about their lives is all that amusing. Unless they intend to make their own amusement." She looks to Rude then, clearly uncomfortable at the thought of it.
no subject
Even so, he doesn't want to worry her overmuch when there might be no need for it. And so he attempts to offer something that's as close to reassuring as he can manage.
"Used to having to suspect the worst of people. Could be for nothing." He doesn't want to get into why, but it's the only means he has to justify his suspicions when there's no real evidence either way.
no subject
His next comment has her frowning. Rude doesn't get into why, but Lioriley - curious creature that she is - feels the need to ask, "You oft suspect the worst of people? Why?" and almost immediately regrets it, her eyes darting off to the side, cheeks bright, "Forgive me... if that was a bit too intrusive."
no subject
"Had to, back home. Hard habit to break." That's all it needs to be, as far as he's concerned; no need to get into that being just as true of him as of anyone else back home or that most of the people he'd once considered enemies had legitimate reason for that.
Even if the politics of the situation are murkier while they're here, Rufus' presence alone is enough to stop Rude straying from habits long-since trained into him.
no subject
Instead of prying further - oh, because she knows that if she pries, he might do the same for her and she is not ready for that. - the elf just smiles, reaching a hand out to rest upon his forearm lightly. A gesture that comes naturally, without thought of consequence for invading what more or less amounts to a stranger's personal space, "Hopefully, you will find those you can trust here. 'Twould be wise to remember that, though we are all strangers, and we should all be assisting one another."
no subject
It's more subtle, for his suit masking the ripple of muscle as he forces himself to let go of that slight uncertain spike of adrenaline. But he still needs a moment before he can bring himself to reply.
"I have some I can trust. From home. That helps." Which isn't to dismiss her sentiment entirely, but for how slow he is to trust anyway it's easier for him to defer to those who have already earned it, one way or another.
no subject
"Ah, forgive me, I did not mean to alarm you." Old habits and all that goes unsaid, but heavily implied in her words. She'll really have to get used to the fact that people from other worlds might not be so inclined to have strangers touching them. The elf gently wrings her fingers together, cheeks bright with embarrassment. She focuses on what he says next.
"That is good." Not entirely what she meant, but good regardless, "I know we do not know each other well, but if you ever need anything, you should not hesitate to ask me."
no subject
So he lets it drop, focuses on the rest of what she says, quiet sound of appreciation at the back of his throat before he replies. "I'll keep it in mind."
He pauses, then, because reciprocating in kind isn't something he generally does and he has his hands full often enough dealing with Reno and Rufus. On the other hand, for all he knows he could be wrong what he's gleaning from her so far is a kindness that could easily land her in a tight spot and while he's not much good at asking for help and not much better at offering, there's something that won't quite let him leave it at that.
What that might be, he'd rather not think about.
And so, after that pause, as he reasons with himself over this being something he wants to offer and means to offer - because offering what he doesn't mean to follow through on isn't him - he finally, if awkwardly, puts those thoughts to words. "You too."
no subject
With that, the elf stands and bows her head slightly, "I do believe I have taken up more than enough of your time. Do enjoy the quiet while you have a chance, hm? I will see you soon." As to when soon was, she had no idea, but she intended to follow through somehow and make time to meet him.
