(Action for all of Fayren)

[Alice had been hidden away in her room in Chireiden, tirelessly working on upgrades for the ever-so demonized security dolls she installed on Satori's commission. This is something she is doing on her own volition, pursuing an idea that would hopefully make the dolls feel more welcoming.

But now, the experiments were complete, and it was time to install the new magical attachments to the security dolls. Alice can be found flying from location-to-location, corner-to-corner, tweaking each security doll to replace their faces with a new one. Just as pretty and cute in her opinion.

Once she was finished with one, she took a step back. She smiled and waved at the doll.]

"Hello~"

[The security doll smiled back and waved back at Alice. Satisfied, the puppeteer moves on to the next. But first...]

[Alice's two helper dolls retrieve the phone and work together to turn it on to a public video broadcast.]

"I have a small announcement. I'm in the process of altering my security dolls around Fayren. Once finished, the dolls will not only still be able to apprehend criminals with the bare minimum force necessary, but they will also respond to greetings. Hopefully they will not be as unsettling to those who see them."

"...Dolls?" Ryoma asked, his tone skeptical. "I mean no offense, but I do not understand how dolls will be able to apprehend criminals."

[Alice understands the skepticism.]

"They're magic dolls, designed and controlled by me. These dolls can react to crimes from petty theft to murder and will act to apprehend them. Even if I'm not around."

"Magic... I see. I have never heard of such an ability being used in such a manner." Ryoma nodded, a thoughtful look on his face.

[Xander spends a lot of time in Fayren. He comes from a medieval fantasy world, so it's the closest thing to home he knows here. He had noticed the security dolls before, and wondered what they were about. So far, though, he's been able to ignore them and go about his business unimpeded.

But that changes today. For not only does he see a young-looking woman altering them, but she's flying? How does THAT work?]

Ah, excuse me! Could I have a moment of your time?

[Alice was a people person. Even if she spends most of her days hidden away with her dolls. She floats down to the man clad in black armor and pirouettes to a stop, because show off.
Her two helper dolls orbit around her once in opposite directions before taking their positions at the puppeteer's sides.]

"Yes? What do you need?"

[Xander's eyes can't help but dart to the dolls as they do their orbit and then come to a stop.]

I beg your pardon, but I was wondering just what it is you're doing here.

"Routine maintenance on my security dolls."

[That matter-of-fact tone assuming that everyone are still aware of her "creepy" dolls.]

I'm sorry -- security dolls?

[He's no stranger to Hoshidan combat puppets, but this is something else.]

[Alice and her two helper dolls point to a shop near by. There was a girl doll similar to her helper dolls, but with slightly different colors. It was a beautiful piece of craftsmanship, almost life-like as it sat with refined etiquette in its little chair.]

"Fayren's Guardian, Satori Komeiji, asked me to make a small security force to apprehend small-time criminals with as little violence as possible. Even if I'm not around to control them."

And they're fully autonomous? That's quite impressive. You appear to be quite the magical scholar.

[Appear to be? Alice knows she is.]

"They're semi-automaton, but thank you."

[Both of her helper dolls curtsy as Alice spoke.]

Fully autonomous or not, I am impressed at the ability to make dolls that can apprehend criminals with minimal violence.

[He looks at the dolls at Alice's sides, then over to the doll she had been working on.]

What are the upgrades for?

[Finally. Someone who appreciates her work.]

"I don't know why, but the humans are afraid of my dolls, so I'm trying to make them more life-like. When I'm finished, the security dolls will smile and wave back to you."

[Xander's gaze wanders to the dolls. He thinks about Alice's answer as he looks them over.]

That may help, but it may not be as much as you hope. What kind of behavior do they normally participate in when they're standing by?

[She's aware it might not be enough to make the public accept her dolls. Fear is difficult to overcome.]

"Exactly as that one is doing now. Appearing to be asleep until it detects violence."

I see. That negates the potential concern I had, then. What happens when they kick into motion?

[Hana was out exploring the various other cities, trying to see what's around and gauge good places to hang out.

She was dressed pretty simply in a t-shirt and a pair of denim shorts along with sneakers, a stark change from the bodysuit she had showed up in, though it's easy enough to see that the pistol she had is still strapped around her waist.

Noticing a blonde girl messing with one of the dolls she was seeing, she blinks and starts walking closer.]

Hey, what are you doing there?

"Routine maintenance on my security dolls."

[This sounds like a familiar conversation.]

[It might be if people aren't familiar with such items. Like her.]

How much security could a doll do? Are they omnics and you upkeep them?

[She hopes they're the non-agressive kind at least.]

"My dolls are equipped with a variety of tools to incapacitate. They're controlled through my magic and are able to see and recognize hostile, aggressive movements and certain word cues."

[One can tell by her tone of voice that she is proud of her security forces. Those humans out there just don't understand.]

[Uh..huh. Right. Magic....really?]

Magic? Is that really a thing here?

[Sure she's in another world and everything, but there's also a highly technological city nearby too. Magic is a bit hard to wrap her head around.]

Respond to greetings how? Because that still sounds really unsettling.

[ Not that he was ever going to go to Fayren anyway but this seemed like yet another great reason not to. ]

"Just smile and say 'hi,' and they will respond in kind. As you would when someone greets you.

Except the dolls still can't speak."

I hope you don't mind if I take a hard pass on trying that out.

"Why would I mind? I never asked you, or anyone, to give it a try, after all."

Okay, maybe not, but you did make a point to mention it in your announcement. Why bother going to the effort of giving them that function if your intent wasn't for someone to try?

"Probably for the same reason why you bothered going to the effort of telling me you weren't going to try."

Hmm. Are we at an impasse? Do we both know the reason but we're unwilling to tell or are we both pretending when we don't know?

"The former. Tell me, then. Why are you afraid of dolls?"

I'm not? Not normal ones, anyway. Even then I'd say I'm only somewhat unnerved. I've seen stranger things. What about you, though? Why are you so fond of them?

"When I was little, I had always dreamed of recreating and improving things. I was given a doll, and since then, my magic was focused on creating a perfect autonomous doll based on the first one."

That's... charming. [ He was at least trying to smile. Honestly. ] Did you lose the first one?

Oh, good! As charming as I found them, I was still a little wary of, ah, disturbing their peace. Now that they can be played with, or at least met in more doll-ish contexts, things ought to be better.

Speaking of which, are you familiar with every sort of magic doll? I believe I've met one not too long ago. Voodoo, by the looks of it.

"Yeah, don't disturb them. You can have limited conversations with them now, but as usual, don't go reaching for money boxes from the wrong angle."

[A magic doll that wasn't her own? Interesting.]

"Manipulation of dolls is my specialty. What can you tell me about this doll you found?"

Heh, I don't know he'd much appreciate being manipulated. Has a will all his own, or seems to.

He's named "six", apparently of a series. I tried to get more out of him, but was met with vaguest mysticism.

[Alice somehow thought he was talking about Medicine. But this Six should still be worth checking out. She doesn't plan to control him, but instead further her research on full automation.]

"What does he look like?"

Let's see...striped fabric, with dull blue and white. Or grey; it's very pallid. Goggled eyes and a sprig of...hair, I suppose? Very nervous. Actually, I can simply show you.

[Alice watched the video, but because it was a video, her magic sight can't see any lies surrounding Six.]

"How anyone can make a fully automated doll from a potato sack is...interesting."

Hmm. Dolls is it? [he may be tangentially interested in this kind of information] What kind of force do you think they could stand up to?

"A better question is, 'what kind of force haven't they stood up to?"

[that kind of talk was laziness as far as he was concerned. Or overassuredness. Even with the best weapon or defense, there was always some force they didn't see coming and having some sort of accurate measurement was better than just bland 'they're too strong to fail']

"Here's an example, then. Were you here when monsters were unleashed on Fayren? My doll legion were very effective in the defense of the city.

If you're not convinced, I suggest talking to other people from Gensokyo."

Hm. [it's not enough] I'd like to test them out myself.

[Alice quietly giggles.]

"Was that a challenge?"
