A. VIDEO; OTA
[ Wherever Weiss is right now, it isn't her usual home or her office. It's not the Skyrise or one of Schnee Company's builings. It's clearly some kind of balcony with a panoramic view of Nova City behind it. She seems like she's a little irritated at something and she's wearing something somewhat more formal than her normal attire, though her hair is still in its normal style. She gives a distinctive, impatient look to someone off-screen of 'well? hop to it' before focusing her attention on the video. ]

Hello everyone. As of today, I'm announcing Mercury Black as Nova City's new deputy. Those of you who have a problem with this can deal with it because frankly, I've done a good job so far and I'm tired of being questioned every single time I do anything when so far it's turned out substantially better than anyone seems to expect of me.

You'll also notice that I've opened a new branch of Schnee Company in Attleton. It's time to stop resting on our laurels.

[ Honestly, nothing seems too off except that Weiss seems to be in a less than ideal mood. She looks off the camera again, a man's voice saying "All you have to do is sign here, Guardian Schnee, and it's yours." ]

It's about time. [ The video clicks off as she mutters that last part, moving away from the balcony. ]

B. TEXT; PRIVATE (to whitley, winter, and sun)
It's about time we go back to living the way we deserve to. If you're willing to offer something up to prove you're not planning on being a leech, I'd be happy to have you.

[ And included is an address in Nova City to her new home. ]

C. ACTION; OTA
[ Well this was... unfortunate. Weiss had just barely woken up and saw what she had thought was herself slamming the door on the way out of the brand new Attleton location. She had no idea what was going on and frankly this wasn't how she wanted to start the day after the ribbon cutting ceremony. She's must've hit her head on something, that would explain how she could possibly see herself walking out of here too.. Uhg. Weiss sighed and went into her pouch to grab some aspirin only to find all of the Dust was gone out of it. Her next thought went to Myrtenaster- also gone.

...Did she get mugged by someone wearing a wig? As far as disguises go, herself against herself had to be the weirdest and most effective. What was she going to do, report herself to Blaze for mugging herself? As importantly, where did her jacket and petticoat go? Did the thief take those too? (What kind of Guardian actually had to deal with this kind of problem?) Even if she wanted to report it, her device was gone. Great.

Weiss frowned at her reflection in the window, then headed to Genessia City to grab one of her old outfits from the old house. It was closer than Nova so she wouldn't have to keep wandering around in the show without frills or a jacket, at least. There's not much left there since she brought most things with her, but her dress from her first Christmas party was and it was clean, so Weiss is going around looking extra snowy as she walks her way back to Nova City. The thief appears to have taken her car too. Feel free to encounter her anywhere on the walk back to Nova, looking rather concerned in general. ]

Is this a joke, Weiss? Because this isn't funny. At all.

Do I look like I'm laughing? Nora, I get it. He's dangerous, and frankly he's obnoxious. But he has no criminal record, he's been doing just fine here, and everything that I've expected of him when I cleared the aforementioned record, he's exceeded. He's useful, and if he's going to be a threat I'd rather have it be where I can see him. No one's asking you to be his partner, you just have to manage to stand in the same room as him when we having meetings without being any more of a pest than he is.

[ She sounds awfully relaxed even as she says that though, and the wall and couch behind her look pretty foreign. ]

I'm not planning on trusting him, I'm planning on using him.

[As unexpected as this is, Jaune finds he doesn't mind it. He doesn't feel much of anything, other than being moderately impressed that Weiss finally grew a backbone. He's tired of defending her when not only are his efforts thankless, but they often end in yelling and with him being seen as the one in the wrong.

And on the bright side, if he ever goes through with trying to murder Mercury (it's more tempting than ever) he'll have a better idea of where he is.]

I was with you until you used that outdated phrase.

[ She's playing with her nails. The backdrop? Well, it's a niceass house that doesn't look like anywhere Jaune's seen before. ]

[Nothing about this idea sounds good. How can they expect Nora to work with a murderer? Who cares if his record is cleared (after Weiss cleared it, by the way), he's still a murderer. Not to mention, she can't work with someone whom she can't trust.

Nora looks very done with the entire idea. There's a long silence, because she's thinking to herself and...everything just makes her feel sick.]

...I quit.

[And the feed immediately gets cut. She doesn't know what has gotten into Weiss, but she certainly pushed a button.]

At least I'm not the poster child for daddy issues.

[his response is almost a kneejerk reaction, short and cynical like it would be when he's just done with someone and feels like being petty.

but he doesn't feel done with weiss.

in fact, he wants to see where this goes.]

Running away again?

Weiss Schnee. Have you lost your mind?

[ Big sis is NOT happy about this very uncharacteristic development. She's been supportive of other things Weiss has done and tried to be a good big sister to her, but this was just the most ridiculous thing Weiss has EVER done. ]

I could stand behind every other thing you've done but this is where I draw the line. [ A tense intake of breath before she exhales. Really not looking very pleased with all of this and she's trying her best to keep her calm. ] Where are you?

[ Weiss stares at the ended feed for a while after it ended. It seemed like every time she did something, anything, it wasn't acceptable. She was always in the wrong because someone else wanted something different of her.

It hurt that Nora didn't even bother to argue, that she just quit like that and hung up. She'd always thought of Nora as someone who would at least try to work things through. Was Weiss getting her way for once, when she yielded to what everyone else wanted so often, when she had to make the hard decision that usually put her out more than anyone else, that bad?

Some friend.

Weiss tossed her device to the other side of the couch. Even if Nora didn't trust Mercury, it hurt that she couldn't just trust that Weiss was, for once, right. No one ever seemed to think her decisions were right until she proved that they were by just moving forward. She'd have to do the same here. Nora would understand or she didn't need Nora.

Weiss took a sharp breath, the looked out onto that view again. She was right, and she would do what she was setting out to do. Whether anyone believed in her or not. ]

No, just every other kind.

[ She looks more pissed off that he said that in public than anything else, but when he asks about running away, she stands up, then walks over to the balcony and shows him the view, then back into the house through the glass windows. ]

I'm moving forward. I'm sick and tired of being the child everyone pretends to listen to, argues with at every turn regardless of whether I'm Guardian or a student, and ends up sharing a room with someone who can't even be bothered to believe in me for more than half a breath if I don't do what they want. I'm getting what I deserve, Jaune.

[Good. She can be pissed. That seems to be her default reaction around him anyway, he might as well give her an actual reason to be.]

It's good in theory and all, but...it's just a house. If anything, it just shows how willing you are to throw your redbills away, making people think you're even more irresponsible and childish.

I mean, I'd still buy a house, it just seems, I don't know-- Kind of desperate?

What exactly is the line you've drawn, Winter? Making good business decisions or finally deciding that my opinion is actually worth something when it seems to be the only one that isn't acting based on how I feel?

[ It's good to know Winter doesn't believe in her either. One change people don't agree with and suddenly it's 'What's wrong with her?' again. Winter didn't have any right to tell her what to do. As much as she loved her, honestly, that's something she knows for a fact. ] I texted you the address already.

Oh yes, because spending my money that I've spent years here working to earn for a place to live independently that isn't subjecting myself to a boy who can't get "no" through his thick head and to get away from people who won't give me half a chance any time I make a decision without acting like every one I make is a bad one? That's being immature and childish, right.

[ She shuts the sarcasm down after that, her voice taking on a cool but much calmer tone. ]

Let's face it Jaune- Ruby didn't want to stick around the house for more than a week. Nora quit because of one choice she didn't agree with. I can't keep feeling guilty because I don't want to hurt you and I do at every turn. I barely feel like I know Blake and Yang anymore. If I'm desperate for a fresh start, it's because I need one.

[Ouch. He's felt pretty apathetic so far, but that actually managed to hurt him. He actually looks like he might cry for a moment, but he shuts down quickly enough, even if there is a pink tinge around his eyes now.]

You know, I should be mad at you, but at least you're finally being honest.

[He's not really listening anymore. Why should he? If Weiss wants to justify her actions, like she always seems she has to do, she can find someone else to do it who she actually appreciates being around. Not someone she sees as little more than a nuisance. His words are terse, and he uses short sentences. Clearly he's done with this conversation.]

You're right. You do hurt me. All the time. Do what you want. It's what you've always done anyway, isn't it? But--

Maybe the reason you feel like people are always giving you a hard time, is because you're kind of a jerk. Just saying. For all your talk about no secrets, and working as a team, you've made more bad decisions than anyone I can think of. Besides Oz.

[Just...huh? Ruby was about to question her decision to put Mercury Black as a deputy, but then again, she don't have the full story of what's going on as she's a new arrival. However, she remembered Mercury Black as having a possible association and link with Cinder, and that's a bad connection.

And then there's Pyrrha...

Since she doesn't want to be questioned on her decisions as a leader. How to approach this? Well, she isn't angry, but more...concerned.]

All right, so. I wanted to know. Does Mercury Black have any positive qualities that we can trust him to uphold?

[Maybe Weiss sees something in him that she doesn't? That's what Ruby wanted to find out.]

[ If he wants to make her feel more alone, more like she's right- that none of her friends are going to stand by her side just because she's finally listening to herself instead of following what everyone expects of her, then he succeeded. ]

What kind of a team constantly refuses to follow their leader or trust their leader despite that I've never actually lead you wrong? I've done everything for my teammates and to protect this place, I've died and watched everyone I care about die because I decided to follow your advice. Meanwhile, the choices I've made that immediately have every one of you yelling at me and not able to trust me? Those are the ones that worked out. I caught Cinder, Mercury's been trying to do something with his life, and Emerald's been staying out of trouble as long as you don't get involved.

[ Jaune may have stopped himself from getting upset, but Weiss can't. She's tired of holding everything in. No part of her wants to hide what she's really feeling anymore. And being the negative traits of her doesn't get rid of or lose the pain. ]

Everyone I've cared about has either disappeared from this place, been killed in front of me, or both except for one person, and even he abandoned me when I made a decision he didn't agree with. I've given up my home, my money, my time, my sleep- What bad decisions have I made? [ There are clear tears in her eyes, but her voice doesn't waver. ] What, exactly, have I done that hasn't been trying to put every one of you first that hasn't taken almost everything I have from me? But sure, Jaune, I'm the jerk and I should feel bad for wanting to feel like I'm worth something still. You win. What now?

[ At least someone's asking. Even if she isn't quite sure she trusts Ruby at this point either. Nora, Jaune, and Winter already turned on her without hearing her side of the story. ]

Mercury's dangerous, but as far as monsters here go, I don't think he's as far gone as most of the worst here. He's capable of choosing to do the right thing and he's proved that- both in action and inaction. He came for his partner when he could've just told us to take her to the hospital and deal with things on his own, so yes, I do believe there's some part of him that is capable of being fostered into something that can function as a deputy. Not to mention, he's got an intense understanding of criminal networks, likely knows a ton of them, and he's a better fighter than most people from our world. If he's going to be dangerous, I'd rather he be dangerous and on our side. I'd also rather one person actually trust that I know what I'm doing for once, but that's proving to be too much to ask.

[ If it was her more sensible, reasonable sister she'd come to be acquainted with here in Genessia? Yeah. She would still believe in her, but there's more to it than just the whole 'new deputy' thing that got under her skin; something about Weiss just seems completely off as well and that's what she no longer trusts.

That little text she'd shot at her before she responded just didn't seem right either in that the wording definitely was NOTHING like she knew her sister to be like. ]

The business decision isn't what I have a problem with. I am fully aware that you have a good head on your shoulders here and deciding to appoint someone like that man as a deputy and telling everyone to 'deal with it'--

[ A deep breath. She could do this and not fly off the handle too much. ]

Are you truly not listening to yourself? You're beginning to sound like our father, Weiss. [ That pains her to say because goddamn it, she thought you were above that level with how much the distaste for their father went. So once she's managed to keep her calm, she'll continue to regard Weiss with a cold look before deciding to speak up after a moment. ] Then i'm coming to talk with you. There's more i'd like to discuss on this subject but I want it to be in person.

[Sometimes it's easier to just stop caring than it is to get angry. They're still there, he just...acts on them differently. But each word sears into him, burning at his neck and flaring up. He ends up snapping.]

I died too, Weiss! The piece of shit who said he was my best friend killed me. My best friend. Now imagine being in my shoes. Imagine that you want the girl you love to be happy, despite that she doesn't see you as anything more than an idiot who's occasionally useful. Imagine you're aren't sure if you trust the guy in the gaudy suit at first, but being the absolute useless moron you are, you decide hey, "Strangers are just friends you haven't met yet".

So you get to know him, you give him the benefit of doubt, and he's such a good actor, so good at pretending to be helpless, that you decide he's a good guy and deserving of her. Because you know how it feels to be helpless, and if you can't be happy, then two people you care about at least deserve to be.

And then he murders you, and you're left with the knowledge that all of this is your fault.

[His voice is hoarse. Weiss may have tears in her eyes, but he's so much quicker to unravel. He always has been.]

So don't talk to me about sacrifices like you're the only person on the damn planet to ever make them. You've hurt yourself. I've hurt everyone else.

[...Maybe that's what he's good at.] You know what, Weiss? Fuck them. I'm still mad, but let's just.

Let's just stop and do what we want for once.

[To be fair, Ruby moved out because she wanted her own space and sharing a bedroom is kinda stuffy. But it has nothing to do with her disagreement with Weiss's leadership and judgement, as Weiss has been here for years, leading others with experience.

Plus spending some time in Everglade, as an Everglade Ranger, which has been a political hotbed as of late, she spend time understanding a fair bit of the conflict between the monster residents and the humans, and the tension between two different races, and figure out a peaceful way to lower down the tensions there. So Ruby understood quickly risking your life for duty and peace for the people.

She listened to Weiss patiently enough. She...snickered at the "better fighter" bit, because Ruby knew better. But with the serious matter at hand, Weiss seem...to need advice. She has no idea what is going on with Weiss life and the lives of their teammates for the years and months they spend time together prior to her arrival last week.]

All right Weiss, I believe you. [Not really by a lot, as she is skeptical.] I can't say I trust him, but it seems you wanted to give him a second chance. If he's the deputy, then he should under oath keep the laws of the city and protect the people and protect you, if he cares about you and protecting everyone.

But if he ever breaks the laws, and don't follow his duty down to the letter, then for our sake, and for the sake of the people and civilians...please be careful. I don't wish to see a bounty on his head if he endangered the city...and you. You're still my friend.

[Even if there's a change in roles and shift of power dynamics, Ruby has to find other ways to serve her capacity as a friend, but leadership and decision-making isn't one of them, for Ruby doesn't have the experience to do that for now. So she won't challenge Weiss's flight of fancy of making decisions, and no one said being a leader is for fun and games.]

[ That hurt, being told by Winter that she sounded like their father. It threw her off for just a brief moment. Honestly, that was nothing she ever wanted to become. And yet this place has taught her that everything she's done to be different has only resulted in her hurting and losing everything. If taking back just some speck of her dignity, believing she deserved better than what she had was like him, then she wasn't wrong.

Weiss had so many things to say about that, but for now, she bit her tongue. Winter wouldn't understand if she just said what she was thinking. It would just be more noise. After taming the angry expression on her face, practically seething at that comment, Weiss's voice stayed calm, but pointed, not yet verbally acknowledging what Winter said. ]

I'll see you soon, sister.

I know I'm not, but I'm not the one calling you a jerk and claiming all of your decisions are bad.

[ She doesn't know if he was expecting her to argue, or for her to compare trauma. She knows they're both valid. Everything she feels is valid and everything he feels is too. That's the problem- it's all true, and it doesn't change anything.

Weiss holds out her hand to gesture to the house. ]

Now you're starting to understand. I'm tired of feeling worthless, so I'm going to stop acting like I am. You should try it.

Look, I'm sorry I insulted your laurels remark. I didn't know you'd take it so seriously.

I guess I could break into a house and borrow it. Just kidding. [He's not, but the ways they cope with feeling worthless are very different.]

I bet chicken nuggets taste better there.

[Well, that's definitely the creature-person-thing that appeared in the cave. Just as condescending as in the "welcome" message, too. If Qubine were the more emotional sort, he could lol at the thought of everyone questioning every single decision she makes. After all, if her followers constantly question her decisions, then what kind of leader is she? But then the fact that Qubine doesn't know what all has happened in the past is the other reason why he doesn't lol.]

You're the one who gives the welcome message in the hologram.

[ All of Mercury's recent progress towards actually trying to change, all of his determination to not become the monster he hated most, all of his potential for good...

It was hard to see it in the way he was smirking right now. ]
